A consultant for the World Bank, Lagmay is a leading
international scientific expert on natural disasters. One example of a study he has done was on the geological hazards of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, which was used as scientific basis for the deliberations on the rehabilitation of the mothballed nuclear plant.
2. AISA MEJINO
Aisa Mijeno is the Co-Founder & CEO of SALt
(Sustainable Alternative Lighting). She developed a metal-air based technology with an application of an LED lamp and low-power mobile devices charger. Scientist and SALt co- founder, Aisa, designed a lantern that ran on, yes, salt (specifically a glass of water and two teaspoons of it). She then identified over 1,500 community beneficiaries across the Philippines who now rely on her SALt invention
3.LUCILLE V. ABAD
Dr. Lucille V. Abad is a radiation chemist, specializing in
radiation chemistry and processing of polymers. She has been a lead country and national project coordinator of IAEA regional projects on subjects related to radiation cross linking, degradation and grafting of polymers for health, agricultural and industrial applications. She also undertakes researches on radiation processing, as program or project leader, within the country. She is a Career Scientist, currently heads the Chemistry Research Section, and the Officer-in-charge of the Atomic Research Division of the PNRI. 4.ROGEL MARI SESE
Rogel Mari D. Sese is a Filipino astrophysicist who is
known for being a proponent of space science in the Philippines. Sese led the National SPACE Development Program which crafted the Philippine Space Development and Utilization Policy and proposal for the creation of the Philippine Space Agency. She and her group analyzed data from 70,000 galaxies and found that they were clustered and grouped together across the universe exactly as Einstein's theory had predicted. Their observations were also consistent with the existence of dark energy and dark matter.
5. JEFFREY PEREZ
Jeffrey Perez, Supervising Science Research Specialist
of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), is hailed as one of the Outstanding Young Scientists by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for his contributions in the field of geology. He led the active faults and paleoseismic studies along the Philippine fault, and was also part of the team that mapped and conducted paleoseismic studies along the Valley Fault System that traverses Greater Metro Manila Area and other active faults in the Philippines.
6. MARIO ANTONIO JIZ LI
Jiz was recognized as a 2017 National Academy of
Science and Technology Outstanding Young Scientist for his contributions to the understanding of immunity to schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection affecting millions of Filipinos. Through the analysis of antibody responses of patients from Leyte, he was able to identify Paramyosin as a lead vaccine candidate and successfully developed the vaccine against the disease. True to its mission, RITM continues to further its thrust in providing relevant, quality health services to protect Filipinos from infectious, tropical and dermatological diseases such as the research of Dr. Mario Jiz II.
7. PHILIP A. ALVIOLA
In the early years of his career, Prof. Alviola has
contributed substantially in the development of methodologies for the monitoring of biological diversity in protected areas. As a mammalogist, he has authored/co- authored 13 papers on mammalian taxonomy, and diversity on mountain ecosystems. Prof. Alviola’s research involvements resulted in the description of 10 new mammals (including a new genus and subgenus), and testing of several hypotheses on mammalian ecology. He has also contributed to studies on bat viruses and public health. As a bat biologist, he has helped foreign and Filipino virologists capture and identify bats, and isolate novel viruses (and antibodies) from them.
8.IRENE CRISOLOGO
Irene is a postdoc at Northwestern University
who studies rainfall and how rainfall can be measured more accurately. She uses data from multiple instruments, mainly weather radars, to understand the process of precipitation from droplets in the atmosphere to the potential hazards when it reaches the ground.
9.REINA REYES
Filipina scientist Reina Reyes first made headlines a decade
ago when, as a 20-something graduate student in Princeton University, she won an achievement award for her research on supermassive blackholes called quasars. Since then, the remarkable work of the young astrophysicist has been finding its way to Philippine media. The most popular one was her study confirming Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Now, she's back in the Philippines as principal scientist for a multinational health care company. 10.JULIUS SEMPIO
A licensed geodetic engineer who can write scholarly
papers and short stories, an employee of various academic science projects, and an artist currently involved in two comics projects one personal and the other science-inspired. Sempio, who specializes in geoinformatics and remote sensing, is helping develop an effective archive and database for images coming from Diwata-1, a Philippine micro-satellite launched into orbit last year, and the future Diwata-2.
