1. What are the significant contributions of the Spaniards and Americans to the
development of science and technology in the Philippines?
2. How does school science shape science and technology in the country?
3. Identify several issues in the Philippines. What science and technology related
policies could be developed and implemented to solve these issues.
4. What can you say about the implementation of some science and technology
policies and projects in the country?
5. Identify 10 Filipino Scientists and research on their contributions in the field of
science.
ANSWERS:
1. The Spaniards introduced formal education and founded scientific
institution. Parish schools were established where religion, reading, writing,
arithmetic and music was taught. Sanitation and more advanced methods of
agriculture was taught to the natives. As stated in hisour.com, The Spanish
also contributed to the field of engineering in the islands by constructing
government buildings, churches, roads, bridges and forts. Science during the
American period was inclined towards agriculture, food processing, forestry,
medicine and pharmacy. Not much focus was given on the development of
industrial technology due to free trade policy with the United States which
nurtured an economy geared towards agriculture and trade.

2. Through school science, we're able to understand the relying information


upon knowing the occurrence of events. Science provokes interest to learners
and leads them up to the reality that is prevailing. Also, It shapes learners to
extend their awareness to the development of science and technology in the
country.

3. Water Shortage, Overpopulation, Air/ Water Pollution are some of the


several issues in the Philippines. Water filtration systems could be developed
and implemented to solve the issue of water shortage, the government should
ensure the distribution of safe water supply to locals. Wide orientation/
Seminars about Family planning could be developed and implemented to the
issue of overpopulation, the government should guarantee that every family
will be knowledgeable enough. Renewable resources over traditional ones
could be developed and implemented to solve the issue of Air/ Water
Pollution, the government should pay attention to using renewable energy
such as biomass, solar, geothermal and etc., to lessen the dependency to non
renewable resources such as coal, petroleum and etc.

4. The implementation of some science and technology policies and projects


in the country is favorable to society. It will help to conserve resources and
reduce difficulties within the whole country.

3. Gregorio Y. Zara, D.Sc. Inventor of the videophone, the first two-way electronic
