3. Gregorio Y. Zara
-was a Filipino engineer and physicist best remembered for inventing
the first two-way video telephone. Zara's video telephone invention enabled
the caller and recipient to see each other while conversing, laying the
foundation for video-conferencing.Other notable creations include an
induction compass used by pilots for direction, a solar-powered water heater
and an alcohol-fuelled aeroplane engine. Zara also discovered a law of
electrical kinetic resistance known as the Zara effect.
4. Fe Del Mundo
-credited with studies that led to the invention of an improved incubator
and a device to treat jaundice. Along with pioneering work in pediatrics, she
had an active medical practice in the Philippines that spanned eight decades
and founded a major children's hospital in that country.
5. Eduardo Quisumbing
-Quisumbing was author of taxonomic and morphological papers, many
of which deal with orchids, including ‘Medicinal plants in the Philippines’
(Manila 1951). Saccolabium quisumbingii has been named in his honour.
6. Geminiano T. De Ocampo
-Filipino scientist and ophthalmologist who is considered as the “Father
of Modern Philippine Ophthalmology”. He was also an inventor who invented
the De Ocampo Corneal Dissector. Dr. de Ocampo was the first to introduce
corneal transplantation in the Philippines
8. Gregorio T. Velasquez
-Dr. Velasquez pioneered in Philippine phycology. He made the first
intensive study of the local Myxophyceae or the bluegreen algae. Devoted at
least 30 years of productive work in the study of Philippine algae from which
he received local and international recognition.
9. Francisco Fronda
-He was the first Filipino researcher to work on improving duck meat.
The ducks he improved were often referred to as "Fronducks," in recognition
of his success in breeding them and in producing stocks. Dr. Fronda worked
extensively on the Cantonese, a breed of chicken imported from Canton,
China. For 15 years, he culled, selected and bred the Cantonese to improve
the breed.
10. Francisco O. Santos
-Santos' most important discoveries was his study on sweet potatoes,
including their shoots and leaves. He found that they have properties that may
combat beriberi, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by vitamin-B
deficiency. He initiated and led the Institute of Nutrition in 1948, known as the
Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and
Technology
