10 Filipino Scientists

Teodoro Agoncillo

In 1985, he received the National Scientist Award for his contribution to Philippine
historiography. He is known as a nationalist author whose books, essays, and poetry often
reflects the point of view of the Filipino masses. His book History of the Filipino People is
widely used as textbook and some students consider it as their bible in studying the history of
the Philippines.

Encarnacion Alzona

Is a noted Filipino historian, civic leader, and the first Filipino woman to obtain a
PhD. She worked tirelessly to obtained women’s suffrage in the Philippines which was
granted only in 1937. Her contributions in social science are the following: Role of women in
society, Women’s Suffrage, and Educational Progress in the Philippines.

Paulo Campos

Is a Filipino physician and scientist who is considered “The Father of Nuclear


Medicine in the Philippines”. He also contribute the research on goiter specifically the
proposition that a genetic factor contributed to endemic goiter and that the main cause of
goiter is iodine intake deficiency. He suggested as treatment the injection of iodized oil.

Ernesto Domingo

Is a Filipino scientist, professor and physician who received the National Scientist
award in 2010. His contributions are the Researched on Gastroenterology Hepatology at the
Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. And he also conducted
investigations on liver organ particularly schistosome granuloma and its role in hepatosplenic
disease and the epidemiology and control of Hepatitis B.

Pedro Escuro
Is a Filipino scientist who is considered as the “Father of Philippine Rice Breeding
Program”. He produced improved rice varieties such as C4-63, C4-137, C4-113, C-168, C22,
UPL-Ri-5, PSB Rc 16, and PSB RC 36. Also he produced three improved wheat varieties (Trigo
1, Trigo 2, Trigo 3).

Gavino Trono Jr.

Is a Filipino scientist who made notable research on tropical marine phycology


with a particular focus on seaweed biodiversity. He conducted studies on the culture of
seaweeds such as Eucheuma denticulatum, Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria spp., Caulerpa
lentillifera, and Halymenia durvillei for coastal communities

Bienvenido Juliano

Is a Filipino scientist who received the National Scientist award in 2000.


Authored or co-authored over 370 scientific papers on rice chemistry especially the
properties of starch and protein in relation to rice grain quality.

Dolores Ramirez

Is a Filipino scientist and an expert in plant genetics. In 1997, she was named
National Scientist of the Philippines. Conducted intensive research on the genetics of the
Macapuno plant (Coconut Sport), sugarcane, mung beans and ornamental plants and studied
the nature of lodging in rice

Eduardo Quisumbing

Is a Filipino scientist and botanist who received the National Scientist award in
1980. The plant Saccolabium quisumbingii is named for him. He studied different species of
Philippine plants particularly orchids.

Teodulo Topacio Jr.


Is a Filipino scientist and veterinarian who received the national scientist award
in 2009. Conducted studies on animal diseases, particularly the transmission of leptospirosis
from pigs to humans. Made researches for the livestock industry which resulted to higher
productivity and the development of reasonably priced products in the veterinarian
pharmaceutical industry. He also worked on the treatment and reduction of abortion among
pig, bacterial abortion in cattle, parasitic liver disease, virus disease of dogs and tumors in cat.
