Some of Outstanding Filipino Scientists

They are only a few of the many Filipino scientists who have set themselves as
models to the young students to inspire more. Here’s the 10 Filipino scientists listed
below have these achievements in their sleeves.

1. Clara Y. Lim-Sylianco, Ph.D.

Dr. Sylianco is a biochemist and a professor of organic chemistry at
the University of the Philippines. Her research includes mutagens, anti-
mutagens, and bioorganic mechanisms. She popularized the coconut oil
diet, meaning taking the meat, oil, milk, and water of the coconut due to its
superior anti-cancer properties. This is presently proven true because so
many Filipinos are using the virgin coconut oil as a detoxing remedy to
maintain wellness.

2. Julian A. Banzon, Ph.D.

Dr. Banzon is a biophysical chemist. He did a
research on sugar cane and coconut as possible sources of
renewable chemicals and fuel. He produced ethyl esters
from coconut and sugar cane. He devised a unique method
of extracting coconut oil through chemical process.

3. Bienvenido O. Juliano, Ph.D.

Dr. Juliano is a brilliant researcher who studied the
properties of starch and protein and other grain constituents in
relation to rice grain quality. He showed that the amylase content
of starch determines to a great extent, the quality of milled rice in
Asia. This is negatively correlated with stickiness of cooked rice.

4. Solita F. Camara-Besa, M.D.

Dr. Camara-Besa is a medical researcher and educator. She did
research on the sodium and potassium content of Philippine foods
to set standards in the preparation of Filipino diet. Her research on
cholesterol levels in local diets lead to the understanding on the
effects of fats and cholesterol in the epidemiology of atherosclerosis
among Filipinos.
5. Paulo C. Campos, M.D.
Dr. Campos is a medical doctor and a noted figure in nuclear
medicine. Among his researches is the Cr-51 tagged Red Cell
studies, and the Genetic Factor of Endemic Goiter. He established
the first and best-known Radioisotope laboratory in the country and
the thyroid clinic of UP-PGH Medical Center.

6. Melecio S. Magno, Ph.D.

Dr. Magno is a physicist who did a research on the
absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of rare-earth crystals;
the effects of typhoons on the distribution of ozone; atmospheric
radiation; gravitation; and sky luminosity. He was recipient of the
UNDP-WMO Fellowship in environmental physics and ozone
research.

7. Dr. Gregorio Zara

He was a Filipino scientist who was very much ahead if his
time. He innovated many things that could possibly be the solution
to our present and future problems, the energy. Some of his
energy-efficient innovations are the TV- telephone system, the
airplane powered by alcohol, the solar panel as energy absorber,
an aircraft propeller entirely made of wood, wooden microscope,
and others.

8. Angel Alcala
Dr. Alcala is a marine biologist, who has devoted more than
30 years studying and doing research on how to conserve the
ecosystem in Southeast Asia. He invented the artificial coral reefs
for fishes to breed. He believes that effective marine sanctuaries
should be set up to sustain the production of fish which is a staple
food of people in Southeast Asia.

9. Jose Velasco
Dr. Velasco is a plant physiologist. He is known for his
research on cadang-cadang a disease affecting coconut. Among
the pioneering works he made in various areas of plant physiology
are: mineral nutrition, photoperiodism, chemical weed control, and
plant growth. His work has become the basis for some crop
production management practices.
10. Baldomero Olivera
Dr. Olivera is a molecular biologist, who contributed to the
growth of molecular biology and biotechnology with his isolation
and characterization of the key enzymes, such as the DNA
ligase and the DNA polymerase. He also discovered numerous
Conus peptides which are now in various phases of clinical trials
as highly specific drugs for pain, epilepsy, and other disorder of
the nervous system.

These Outstanding Filipino scientist personalities that inspired the Filipino youth to
pursue higher goals in life to make discover something around the world Generally, our
generations should be give them a huge of course to understand a deeply meaning of
the new discovering something.
