Identify several Filipino scientist and research in their contributions. Examine what
made pursue a career in science.

1. Angel Alcala (Marine Biodiversity)

Angel Alcala is a Filipino Biologist who was recognized for his contributions to
building sanctuaries and to promote biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystems in the
Philippines. His biological contributions to the environment, his passion for marine life
especially those in the tropical waters of his country’s ecosystems have made him a
renowned hero for natural sciences in the Philippines. He spent over 30 years studying
marine biology, conservation biology, terrestrial ecology and is behind the invention of
artificial coral reefs for fisheries in Southeast Asia. He is one of the First Filipinos Inducted
into Fulbright Hall of Fame.

Angel's father worked as a fish farmer, so Dr. Alcala was introduced to fish at a
young age. This was when his interest and passion for environmental science, especially
marine biology, began.

2. Paulo C. Campos (Nuclear Medicine)

Paulo Campos is a Filipino Physician and educator who is known for his promotion
of wider community health care and his achievements in the field of nuclear medicine for
which he was named as The Father of Nuclear Medicine in the Philippines.

He was the son of a school officer and an elementary teacher which may have inspired
him to pursue studies in academics. He had learned the value of agriculture even when he was
young which is also a factor to his chosen career. Dolores A. Ramirez, Ph.

3. Ramon C. Barba (Flower Induction)

Ramon Barba is a Filipino inventor and Horticulturist, thanks to his invention, mango
trees, and other crops now can produce more flowers using ethrel and potassium nitrate.
This invention change how mangoes and other fruits or crops are grown globally.

His inspiration to study in this field came from his grandfather, Juan Cabanas, who was
then an official of the Bureau of Plants and Industry (BPI) and Dr. L.G. Gonzales who is
considered as the father of horticulture in the Philippines.

4. Gregorio Y. Zara (Inventor of the Videophone)

Gregorio Zara was a famous Engineer and Physicist in the Philippines who invented
and patented the first Videophone device (‘Photo Phone Signal Separator Network) in 1955.
He also discovered the physical law of Electrical Kinetic Resistance called the Zara effect in
1930.
All this begun because he had goals and dreams he wanted to attain despite being
born in a poor family and that led to his success.

5. Fe del Mundo (Bamboo Incubator Inventor)

Dr. Fe Del Mundo (Pediatrician) – credited with studies that lead to the invention of an
improved incubator and a device to treat jaundice. Fe del Mundo’s invention has saved
countless premature infants around the world. She is known as the Inventor of Bamboo
Incubator. Dedicated her life to the cause of pediatrics in the Philippines.

The death of her younger sister Elisa, who had made known her desire to become a
doctor for the poor, inspired del Mundo to choose a career in medicine. In 1926, del Mundo
enrolled at the UP College of Medicine, at the original campus of the University of the
Philippines in Manila.
