Filipino Botanist and Scientists and their contribution to Botany

Baldomero Olivera, Jr.


In recognition of his significant studies and accomplishments in the field of
biochemistry and molecular biology, specifically the discoveries of numerous
Conus peptides which are now in various phases of clinical trials as highly
specific drugs for pain, epilepsy, and other disorders of the nervous system.
Dr. Baldomero Olivera is most famous for discovery of many cone snail
toxins important for neuroscience. These molecules, called conotoxins led to
a breakthrough in the study of ion channels and neuro-muscular synapses.

Asuncion Raymundo
Born on August 15, 1946. Dr. Raymundo is a Professor and currently Dean
of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños
(UPLB). Previously, she was the Director of the Institute of Biological

Angel C. Alcala
Born in March 1, 1929. Angel Alcala has more than thirty years of experience
in tropical marine resource conservation. Angel Alcala is considered a world
class authority in ecology and biogeography of amphibians and reptiles, and
is behind the invention of artificial coral reefs to be used for fisheries in
Southeast Asia. Angel Alcala is the Director of the Angelo King Center for
Research and Environmental Management.
Quirino O. Navarro
A significant contribution of Dr. Navarro to science is the determination of
nuclear property in the isotopes of californium, einsteinium and dysprosium

Evelyn Mae T. Mendoza


Born on August 7, 1947. In recognition of her sustained basic researches in
plant biochemistry: (a) on the factors affecting the nutritional quality and
acceptability of cow pea, mungbean and several under-utilized Philippine
indigenous legumes.

Jose O. Juliano
Dr.Juliano is known for his researches in nuclear chemistry and physics.
Noteworthy of his published research works with total 50 are (1) Rapid and
Non-destructive Analysis of Sulfur and Calcium by Radio activation and
Photo neutron Counting, (2) Disintegration of Iron- 52 and Iron-53.

Bienvinido O. Juliano
After obtaining his Ph.D. with straight A's at the age of 22, Dr, Juliano
consistently demonstrated excellence in research. at age of 42, he has
already more than a hundred scientific articles mostly published in
international journals.

Edgardo Gomez
In Recognition of his outstanding research achievements on marine
ecosystems which serve as basis for the management of and the
conservation programs for the country's marine resources.

Eduardo Quisumbing - Filipino Botanist: 


Filipino botanist, Eduardo Quisumbing was a noted expert in the medicinal
plants of the Philippines. He was author of more than 129 scientific articles.
many on orchids. Eduardo Quisumbing served as the Director of the National
Museum of the Philippines, where he rebuilt the Herbarium. The plant
"saccolabium quisumbingii" is named in honor of Eduardo Quisumbing.

Dr. Lina Villacarlos


Dr. Lina Villacarlos, recently discovered a new breed of parasitic fungus. She
named it Entomorphthora leyteensis because it falls under the fungus family
known as Entomorphthorales – a family that is classified as parasites on
insect like the common housefly – and leyteensis from the name of the place
where she discovered it, that is Leyte.

Doctor Gregorio Velasquez is a distinguished scientist in Philippine
phycology. Gregorio Velasquez spenting over thirty years researching
myxophyceae which is bluegreen algae.
