Jose Cruz
Jose Cruz was born on September 17, 1932. He was elected as Academician (Corresponding Member)
in 2003. He finished B.S. Electrical Engineering at the University of the Philippines in 1953, M.S.
Electrical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956 and Ph. D. Electrical
Engineering, University of Illinois, 1959. In appreciation of his scientific and technological
contributions to electrical engineering through the progress of several methods for the understanding
study of dynamic systems with respect to parameters variations; founding of the idea comparison
sensitivity matrix that captures the result of feedback on shifting the influence of parameter distinction
on system output errors in multi-variable feedback system; and the preservation of system optimality
for a range parameter standards even when the feedback control structure is set.

Emerita De Guzman 
Dr. Emerita de Guzman elected as Academician in 1980 gave an
excellent contribution in her series of job on the enlargement and
progress in vitro of the makapuno coconut embryo. As an outcome
of this, she has transformed the old ratio of the makapuno-bearing nuts
in the tropics. Dr. de Guzman produced 100 percent all makapuno-bearing in the raceme on which
before produce only 3-5 makapuno nuts in every raceme bearing 14-19 nuts.
Ceferino Follosco

Academician Ceferino L. Follosco was born on February 3, 1931. He was known as Ph. D. (honoris
causa) Mechanical, Electrical and Agricultural Engineering. Follosco was known for his excellent
works and undertakings in the field of engineering (agricultural mechanization and automotive),
technology modernization, public sector domination embracing a wild field of creative approaches in re
engineering and bureaucracy, formulating and implementing laws and programs for small and medium
enterprises and S&T administration, with technology transfer, R&D, Engineering and Science
Education, Institutional Building.

Francisco Fronda

Dr. Francisco Fronda committed more than 6 decades of his life to teaching, research and additional
services elected as Academician in 1979. He contributed hugely to the expansion of poultry industry
not only in the Philippines but in Asia region as well. In recognition of his original contributions, the
Philippine Association of Animal Science in 1980; cited him as the Father of Poultry Science in the
Philippines and Father of Thai Poultry Industry honor presented by Her Royal Highness, the Crown
Princess of Thailand in 1982.
Angel L. Lazaro III

Dr. Angel L. Lazaro III is a registered Civil Engineer and Environmental Planner born on August 23, 1943.
He is the receiver of Certificates of Recognition as Structural Engineer and Civil Engineering Educator from
the Board of Civil Engineering. He was also acknowledged as the Most Outstanding Civil Engineer Award
from the Professional Regulation Commission in 1994, and the Professional Award in Engineering from the
UP Alumni Engineering Association in 1989. Dr. Lazaro has more than 35 years practice in different civil
engineering projects including buildings, highways, bridges, water systems, port works and industrial
estates.

Juan Salcedo Jr.

Dr. Juan Salcedo contributed immeasurably to the areas of biochemistry, nutrition, and physiology as a
scientist. He has published 265 works and studies in the Philippine and foreign science journals. And as
science administrator, he helps execute science policy improvement, science endorsement and scientific
manpower improvement.

 
Gregorio Velasquez

Dr. Velasquez is a pioneer in Philippine physiology. He was elected as


Academician on 1978 and conferred as National Scientist on 1982. He made the original intensive
study of the local Myxophyceae or the blue green algae and dedicates at least 30 years of fruitful work
in the study of Philippine algae from which he acknowledged local and international credit.

Benito Vergara

Born on June 23, 1934, National Scientist Vergara obtained his bachelor's
degree from the University of the Philippines, his master's degree from University of Hawaii, and his
doctoral degree from the University of Chicago majoring in Plant Sciences. He was elected as
Academician on 1987.

Teodulo M. Topacio

Teodulo Topacio, Jr. was recognized because of his noteworthy unique contributions to information in
the area of leptospiral disease of domesticated animals, which may provide as the foundation for the
institutional control measures for these ailments. He was born on November 30, 1924.
Joventino Soriano

Dr. JD Soriano is a Geneticist recognized for his studies on Plant Cytogenetics and Mutations Research
most of which found publication in international journals such as the Scientific American. By using
radiations and chemical mutagens, Dr. Soriano contributed much to the eludication of the Mutation
Process.

Perla Santos-Domingo
Perla Santos-Ocampo was born on July 25, 1931. Her work in diarrheal diseases provides a lot in the
elucidation of etiologic factors and arrangement of control measures that reinforced worldwide
commendations in oral re-hydration and nutritional administration.

Alfredo Lagmay

Dr. Alfredo Lagmay was born on August 14, 1919. He practiced a lot of research linking to
investigation scrutiny of behavior revision, recreation and associated states, and Hypnosis.

Quintin L. Kintanar

Dr. Kintanar, born on August 12, 1937, has renowned himself in the area of pharmacology and
environmental science. Dr. Kintanar scrutinizes the mechanism of fatty liver and Hypolipedemia
induced by erotic acid thus supporting in the explanation of the molecular mechanisms of lipo protein
biosynthesized. In the course of his original researches it advanced the frontiers of knowledge in his
fields.
Carmen Li. Intengan

Dr. Carmen Li. Intengan, born on April 7, 1915, served as the director of the Food and Nutrition
Research Institute from 1974-1980. She has contributed to the promotion of nutrition in the country as
a researcher and science administrator.

Andrew Gonzales

Andrew Gonzales was born on February 29, 1940. He was acknowledgment because of his outstanding
deeds and achievement in the area of linguistics: his research on language acquisition of Filipino and of
English by Filipino children and his study on language and intellectuality of Filipino as a language of
intellectual discourse.

Edito Garcia

Dr. Edito Garcia, born on September 16, 1921, a Professor of Parasitology at the UP Institute of Public
Health, has done research in the areas of immunology and parasitic infections. Dr. Garcia has been
conducting studies on the immunology of Schistosomiasis Japonica particularly on the improvement of
vaccines since 1979. A hypothesis has been formed which enabled Dr. Garcia and his associates to
discover an immunologic mechanism which leads to granulocytic modulation and consequently disease
abatement in schistosomiasis. To date 18 scientific papers on the advancement of this study have been
published in foreign journals and a vaccine against infection is being formulated.
Ernesto Domingo

Ernesto Domingo acknowledged of his outstanding achievements in the


research of the nature of schitosome granulocytic and its function in hepatosplenic disease; the
epidemiology and control of Hepatitis B in the Philippines; and the clinical behavior and care of
Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Filipinos or Pathophysiology.

Conrad Dayrit

Dr. Conrado Dayrit, a medical practitioner, researcher, instructor in clinical pharmacology and
cardiology were born on May 31, 1919. Dr. Dayrit has authored/co-authored more than 70 scientific
articles published here and overseas. He also edited and chaired the First and Second Edition of Drug
Index, 1965, 1967, and the First Edition of the Philippine Formulate, 1978.

Mercedes Concepcion

Mercedes Concepcion was recognized for her contributions in the field of population research and
policy, were born on June 10, 1928. She pioneered the research and continuing work on Philippine as
well as the Southeast Asian Demographic processes is acknowledged globally. She studied the
population growth in the Philippines which has been an important input in the improvement,
monitoring and evaluation of the national population policy and program.
Veronica F. Chan

Veronica Chan who was born on March 24, 1933 was recognize because of her pioneering and great
scientific accomplishments in Virology and Immunology. Being one of the Earliest pioneers in
Philippine virology and immunology, she munificently opens her storehouse of cognition to all. Her
research includes the fresh knowledge that has been implement in medical practice, and for global
status as scientist, sharing her expertness with the World Health Organization and the health
institutions of the countries. Chan bountiful efforts have brought improvements in policy,
administration of severe cases of viral infections as well as their prevention and manipulation.

Magdalena Cantoria

With pharmacy and botany as backdrop, Dr. Cantoria was born on October 25, 1924. She has made
basic researches on the pharmacognosy of agaar, rauwolfia, datura, mint and Piper Species. Her
researches deal mainly on the morphology, physiology and biochemistry of drug plants.

Ledivina Carino

Dr. Carino was born on April 22, 1942. She was acknowledged of her excellent works and achievement
in the fields of Public Administration, Political Science and Sociology. In which it extent a variety of
issues and approaches in improvement, from local sovereignty to national supremacy, from
participatory growth models and approaches to a focus on the elite, and from bureaucratic fraud to the
imperatives of the civil service.
Paulo C. Campos

Dr. Paulo Campos, a health scientist was born on July 27, 1921,he was distinguished for his effort on
Nuclear medicine. Dr. Campos authored/co-authored 75 scientific journal a few of which were
awarding. His researches include The Genetic Factor in Endemic Goiter won First Prizes in Research
Award; Cr-51 Tagged Red Cell Studies and the Observation on some Parameter of Insulin Action.

Filomena Campos

Dr. Filomena Campos, born on March 30, 1930 was renowned for her contributions to cotton research
in the Philippines. This study leads to the improvement of a package of expertise on cotton fabrication
achieved in somewhat short period of three years.

Solita Camara

A health mentor and researcher Dr. Camara-Besa was born on March 2, 1915. She has worked on the
sodium and potassium substance of Philippine foods and established principles useful in the research of
diets. Her series of eight papers on Cholesterol levels in relative to diets of a variety of segments of the
Filipino given an Idea of the Importance epidemiological basic Data on Filipino residents, which are
very significance of fats, and Cholesterol in the Epidemiology of Atheroscleriosis among Filipinos.
Benjamin Cabrera

Dr. Benjamin Cabrera who was born on March 18, 1920 has more than a hundred Scientific
Publications in relation to medical parasitology and public health. Dr. Cabrera acknowledged the
Philippine Legion of Honor, a Presidential Award in 1996 for his work on filariasis. With the
elucidation of the epidemiology and life cycles of filarial parasites, precautionary procedures in the
form of medicine treatment of individual cases as well as measures against the mosquito vectors can be
implemented. Dr. Cabrera also worked on the control of ascariasis. With the model he anticipated,

Clare Baltazar

species of the Philippine parasitic Wasp�s are Dr. Baltazar other important contributions to Science.

Ramon Abarquez Jr.

Dr. Abarquez was elected Academician on 1993. He was born on July 9, 1928. Her academic
achievement includes M.D., University of the Philippines in 1953 and A.A., University of the
Philippines in 1948.
Ma.Cynthia Rose Bautista

Dr. Ma. Cynthia Rose B. Bautista recognized because of her contribution


to social sciences. Her scientific researches includes the impacts of urbanization, labor migration, and
Asian monetary calamity to the country's diverse society, lives, and rights of Filipino women, poverty
alleviation, and people empowerment.

Leoncio Amadore

Dr. Leoncio A. Amadore was recognized with his involvement to


earth sciences, which had been internationally documented as the Amadore Method. This is the
scientific works of this atmospheric scientist resulted to a pragmatic process of forecasting tropical
cyclone progress.

Teresita P. Acevedo

Dr. Teresita P. Acevedo is a food element engineer whose studies helped and influenced the country's
lawmakers in inventing food improvement policies and standards. Her investigation studies are now
used as basis in the plan and formation of globally competitive food processing technologies that
constantly aid the country's food industrial division in producing outstanding superior food products.
She contributes a lot to engineering and industrial researches.

Rosalinda Solevilla

Dr. Solevilla's research conclusions contributed extensively in the endorsement of the application of
medicinal plants as alternative medicines, and in the government's program to improve the country's
health care and healthy lifestyle.
Eduardo San Juan

Dr. San Juan is a NASA engineer who designed the moon buggy that the
Apollo astronauts used on the moon. He uses homemade materials for the moon buggy that was still
chosen over those modern designs. Dr. Eduardo San Juan finished his degree from Mapua Institute of
Technology.

Carmen Velasquez

Dr. Carmen Velasquez is recognized in the American Men and Women of


Science; she is known in the International Who's Who of Intellectuals and World Who's Who of
Women and International Scholars Directory because of her abundant discoveries.

Dioscoro Umali

He was born on November 17, 1917 at Biñan, Laguna. Dr. Umali's studies made programs of rainfed
and upland agriculture, social forestry, and environmental preservation. His search for excellence, The
UP College of Agriculture became a leading institution of advanced learning in Asia.

Jose Rodriguez

Dr. Jose Rodriguez bid to stop Hansen's Disease commonly known as leprosy. He
then planned a control program that was used here and in other Asian countries. He dedicated 53 years
of his existence to the control and avoidance of leprosy in the Philippines. He was also tribute with the
1974 Damien Dutton Award.
Hilario Lara

Dr. Lara structured the Institute of Public Health at the University of the Philippines. He also helped set
up the National Research Council of the Philippines.

Pedro Escuro

Dr. Pedro Escuro leads the improvement, segregation, and release of nine Seed Board rice selections.
He was renowned by developing rice breeding in the country.

Fe Del Mundo

Dr. del Mundo gave her all for the foundation of pediatrics in the nation. She was the essence of a
mother in all her workings.

Geminiano De Ocampo

Dr. Geminiano de Ocampo pioneered corneal transplantation in the Philippines. He also designed a
corneal dissector. Aside from these accomplishments, he also put up the De Ocampo Eye Hospital, the
primary eye hospital in the Philippines.
