Dance at Bougival and Still Life with Three Puppies Compare and Contrast
Pierre-Auguste Renior was a French Impressionist painter, best known for his radiant and
intimate paintings. Renior was noted for the way his lines came together within his paintings and
his brilliance of color schemes.” Unlike other impressionists he was as much interested in
painting the single human figure or family group portraits as he was in landscapes…” ( Funk &
Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, p. 1). As exhibited within his painting Dance at Bougival
which was a painting of couple dancing together in an intimate setting with a beautiful landscape
background of trees behind them as well as other people dinning. It is stated that his early work
was influenced by two artists, one being Claude Monet through his treatment of light and the
other being Eugene Delacroix and his treatment of color. Renior used both color and lighting
through his work. Renior was part of the early impressionism era whereas stated above they
focused on vibrant light and saturated colors. It was said that critics faulted impressionist for
their work because it appeared to have an amateurish and unfinished approach to it. The early
impressionist left behind the idea of three-dimensional perspectives and used lighter more vivid
Paul Gaugin was a French impressionist painter, although unlike Renior, Paul was a part
of the post-impressionist era. “Paul Gauguin was the first nineteenth century artist to move away
from naturalism…” (Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, p. 1). Paul’s work involved
a lot of lush coloring and two-three-dimensional art works. Gaugin was a leading in the post-
Impressionist era. The post-Impressionist era was combusted of artist who wanted to move away
from the naturalism of the early impressionist era and focus more on the optics of light within
their images. Gaugin was influenced by several artist and when he painted this specific art work ,
Still Life with Three Puppies, he was at the time living in Brittany among a group of
experimental painters. In this particular painting instead of placing the focal point on to one
single aspect he uses a diagonal approach to place the focus on three different aspects of work
such as the three puppies, the fruit, and the three stools (goblets) that are all pictured within the
painting.
When looking into to comparing the art works there are a few things that are notable and
worth mentioning. One being the focus point of both the images and the messages that the artist
are the to portray through their work. In Renior’s work he focuses on people and landscapes and
has a more intimate approach to his artwork as to when focusing on Gaugin’s work the focal
point is more so all over the place being that it focus’s on three different aspects. Also, in
Gaugin’s work there is so landscape and no intimate aspect noted. Something that the photos
care are their painters use of bold outlining in their images but differ in the sense that one is
exhibiting humans and the other one is exhibiting animals. It can be also noted that both
paintings give of a clear hint of the environment. That is said that within Renior’s photo the
viewer gets to see a couple dancing and enjoying each other company at what seems to be a
formal outside dinner or event, due to the other guest being setting within the beautiful landscape
When it comes to the different time periods Impressionism early and post is that early
impressionism is the art movement which began in the 19th century in France. Post
impressionism is the art movement that took a rebellious sense against the original
impressionism period. Impressionism was characterized by the uses of vibrant colors and really
had no outline or structure to its work it was more of free hand of strokes. Whereas post
impressionism was an array of different artist varying in several different aspects all together, it
was a combination of different styles all together under an umbrella known as the post
impressionism era.
