GOOGLE
TRANSLATE
Introduction
Google Translate software has become a communication shortcut for people who speak a second
language, particularly in written media. It is considered one of the most intelligent software’s in terms of
Artificial Intelligence. Hence this research will be discussing the information gained about google
translate and how it is considered an intelligent software-app.
Background
Google translate has been developed in 2006 when the founder of Google –Sergei Brin felt frustrated
using a third-party translation software. Fifteen years later, the application is now installed by default on
Android smartphones and is also available in Apple smartphones, yet on Android smartphones the “Tap
to Translate” function provided by google translate app works across all apps available in Play Store.
Furthermore, Google Translate is now considered the most commonly used online translator app and
website. It supports 133 languages and covers 99% of the online population. As it is a multilingual
neural machine translation service that was developed by Google. The translator translates texts,
documents, websites from one chosen language to another.
In April 2016, Google Translate claimed almost 500 million total users, with more than 100 words
translated on daily basis, in comparison the company’s statement in May 2013 which stated that the
company served almost 200 million people every day.
Google Translate was initially launched as statistical machine
translation services using the United Nations and European
Parliament documents and transcripts in order to collect linguistic
data rather than translating the text immediately and directly. The
mechanism required to first translate text to English language then
pivot it to the target language, during which it searches for
patterns in millions of documents to help decide which words are
more suitable and how to arrange them in the target language.
Methodology
Figure #4. Uploading a photo from camera roll to translate any picture.
Results
Google Translate has been the subject of a survey to learn more about how it is viewed as intelligent
software. Eight questions were asked on the survey. "Have you ever heard of Google Translate?" was the
first query. Yes was the only response given by all responders. How frequently do you use Google
Translate, was the second query. Google Translate is used by 50% of people very frequently, by 28.6%
of people frequently, and by 21.4% of people rarely. "Do you think Google Translate is a necessary
app?" was the third query posed. Yes was the response from 71.4 percent. “ do you think google translate
uses artificial intelligence?” was the fourth query posed. 35.7 percent of respondents said no, while 64.3
percent said yes. "Can Google Translate be trusted as an accurate translator?" was the fifth query posed.
fifty percent concur 35.7 percent don't agree, 7.1 percent strongly disagree, and 7.1% strongly agree. The
sixth query was, "Can Google Translate help people understand my language better?" 57.1 % are in
agreement, 21.4 % are in disagreement, 7.1 % are very in disagreement, and 14.3 % are strongly in
agreement. Did you know that Google Translate offers a camera option? was the seventh query. 42.9
percent of respondents said "yes," 50 percent said "no," and 7.1 percent said "maybe." How important is
artificial intelligence to Google Translate? was the eighth query. Most of the responses stated that
artificial intelligence is important to google translate.
Conclusion
Examining the role of artificial intelligence in Google Translate was the goal of this study. Google
Translate is a widely used machine translator. It is considered one of the most intelligent software’s in
terms of Artificial Intelligence. The purpose of google translate is to translate text, handwriting, photos,
and speech in over 100 languages with the Google Translate app . Google Translate is capable of
translating entire conversations , as well as translating web pages, text messages, and even photos. In
conclusion this study proved that google translate is a successful artificial intelligence software.
