PROCEDURE ON ETS METHOD

1. Obtain the requisition form and identify the patient. Two forms of active
identification are required.
2. Reassure the patient that the minimum amount of blood required for testing
will be drawn
3. Select the appropriate tubes for the specimens to be collected
4. Perform hand hygiene
5. Position the patient properly
6. Apply the tourniquet 3-4 inches above the collection site. Select the
appropriate vein for venipuncture
7. Clean the puncture site by making a smooth circular pass over the site with
the 70% alcohol pad, moving in an outward spiral from the zone of
penetration
8. Assemble equipment and put on gloves
9. Perform the venipuncture. Insert the needle, bevel side up, into the vein
10.Push the tube completely onto the needle. Blood should begin to flow into
the tube until the vacuum is exhausted.
11.Slowly remove the tube and invert gently before inserting the next tube.
12.After opening the patient’s hand, place a dry gauze/cotton over the
venipuncture site and slowly remove the needle
13.Apply mild pressure to the pad until the bleeding has stopped
14.Label the tubes properly
15.Properly dispose of all contaminated supplies in a sharp/ biohazard
container.
16.Thank the patient
PROCEDURE IN SYRINGE METHOD

1. Obtain the requisition form and identify the patient. Two forms of active
identification are required.
2. Reassure the patient that the minimum amount of blood required for testing
will be drawn
3. Select the appropriate tubes for the specimens to be collected
4. Perform hand hygiene
5. Position the patient properly
6. Apply the tourniquet 3-4 inches above the collection site. Select the

7. Clean the puncture site by making a smooth circular pass over the site with
the 70% alcohol pad, moving in an outward spiral from the zone of
penetration
8. Assemble equipment and put on gloves.
9. Perform the venipuncture
10.Remove the tourniquet. Place a gauze pad/ cotton over the puncture site and
remove the needle.
11.Immediately apply sight pressure to the gauze pad/ cotton over the
venipuncture site
12.Recap the needle by using the fishing method
13.Removed the needle from the syringe to the appropriate tubes
14.Tubes must be positively identified after filling with a firmly attached
patient label
15.Properly dispose the used materials
16.Thank the patient
PROCEDURE ON CAPILLARY PUNCTURE

1. Obtain the requisition form and identify the patient. Two forms of active
identification are required.
2. Reassure the patient that the minimum amount of blood required for testing will
be drawn
3. Select the appropriate microcontainers/tubes for the specimens to be collected
4. Perform hand hygiene and put on gloves
5. Position the patient with the arm extended to form a straight line from shoulder
to wrist
6. Do not attempt a capillary puncture more than twice
7. Position the patient with the arm so that the hand is easily accessible
8. Cleanse the fingertip of the 3rd (middle) or 4th (ring) finger with an alcohol prep.
Allow the finger to dry or wipe dry with sterile gauze.
9. Using a sterile lancet, puncture the fingertip in the fleshy part of the finger,
slightly to the side of the center and across (perpendicular to) the grooves of the
fingertip
10.Wipe away the first drop of blood with sterile gauze/ cotton
11.Allow another large drop of blood to form. Lightly touch the microcontainer/
capillary collection tube to the LARGE drop of blood. Collect drops of blood
into the collection device by gently massaging the finger. Avid excessive
pressure that may squeeze tissue fluid into the drop of blood. Fill the
microcontainer/tube(s) as needed.
12.Seal the tubes with a sealant (clay and candle)
13.When finished, clean the site and apply pressure with clean gauze to stop the
bleeding. Apply an adhesive bandage (if necessary)
14.Label all specimens per accepted guidelines
15.Thank the patient
