Class Planning: 3 weeks = 6 classes (50 minutes each)

Theme: Travel

Lesson 1: Hand out to the students a map of the world. Introduce and practice names of countries and
continents.
Have students identify the country where they were born, the country where they live, the
countries they have already visited and the ones they would like to visit.
Suggested text: Living Culture (FUSCOE, Kate; BREWSTER, Simon; DAVIES, Paul; ROGERS,
Mickey. Skyline 3, Unit 7. Macmillan)
Homework: research about social customs of a country and compare with the country where
they live.

Lesson 2: Talk about languages. Show a list of the most spoken languages of the world.
Dialogue: in pairs, have students practice expressions such as “What languages can you
speak?”, “Can you speak ………?”, and name of languages.
Small talk: ask if anyone has already travelled abroad. Talk about the difference of time.
Introduce new vocabulary (write them on the board): abroad, jet-leg, daylight saving time. Practice new
vocabulary in a big group.
Text: Travelling Abroad.
Exercise – packing: make a list of the items you think you need to take on a trip. Practice
known vocabulary: clothes, utensils etc. It’s a good idea to use pictures to recall the names of everything
(support link: http://www.wikihow.com/Image:PackingList-9156.jpg).

Lesson 3: Review the checklist made in class (Lesson 2). Introduce possessive using the same items in
the students’ lists.
Suggested text + listening: Away for the weekend (“Touchstone”, by Cambridge)
Have students say the items with the correct possessive. Ask them what they need to take,
what one classmate need to take, what more than one classmate need to take, what the student and
another person (one or +) need to take. Always using the possessive adjective: my, your, her, his, its, our,
your, their.

Write the possessive adjective on the board. Introduce and explain possessive pronouns:
mine, yours, hers, his, its, ours, yours, theirs.
Make a new column with the correspondent possessive pronoun to each possessive adjective.

Lesson 4: Small talk – introduce time expressions: ask the students how often they use to travel, how
long they stay. Direct answers using: one time/once, two times/twice, three times/thrice (optional), four
times etc. + a day, a week, a month, a year; every/every other + day, weekend, week, month, year,
specific days of the week; always, never, sometimes, often, seldom, hardly ever. Etc. Write them on the
board.
*Using images and/or calendars to illustrate frequency could be a good idea for exemplifying.
Dialogues: in pairs, practice time expressions talking about each one’s habits and routines.
Practice questions, such as: How often? How long? How many times…? Etc.

Introduce prepositions of time. Ask about the students’ routine using When? What time…..?
Write the on the board. Direct answers using prepositions of time: at, in, on.
Present expressions using prepositions of time: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the
evening, at night.

Dialogues: in pairs, practice prepositions of time and questions, talking about each one’s
habits and routines and personal information like schedules, birthdays, dates etc.

Lesson 5: Focus on vocabulary – topic: landscapes.


Small talk: Bring back the theme “Travel” and ask the students what kind of trip they prefer,
what they like to do when they are travelling, where they like to go. Present possible landscapes
students can see on a trip and the activities they can do in each kind of place.

In class activity: write a composition about your favorite place to travel. What do you like to do
there?

Lesson 6: Small talk: ask students how the weather is today. Write “weather” on the board and keep
asking questions, trying to explain the word.
Have them describe how the day feels today. Ask them how they think the day is in a foreign
country that has a totally different weather.
Finally, introduce adjectives related to the weather: cold, hot, cool, warm, foggy, rainy, sunny,
windy, cloudy, snowy. Write them on the board. Use images to illustrate.
Ask students what is their favorite weather. Ask them how they prefer the weather when they
are going to travel and to what places they like to go because of the weather.
Work on a text about the weather and practice vocabulary doing reading comprehension
exercises.
Suggest students check a website in English that is about weather. Ex.:
