Dear Family of God,
Have we ever realized, that we tend
to show a differential attitude to-
wards God, ‘before’ and ‘after’ being
it is easy for us to turn to God, when noth-
ing else can offer us any hope. we even
hastily make a vow to oblige God - grant
our pleas. God is merciful and compas-
sionate. He responds to the cries of his
children. Sadly, in our fallen nature, we
blatantly be indifferent to God, once He
meets our needs. 1 Samuel 12:8-12,
points out to the history of Israel, identifies
and confronts this recurring tendency, of
being indifferent to God, especially ‘after’
being heard by Him, in their misery. It is
true with many of us, even now, that we
turn our backs to God, forgetting His
goodness and continue to forsake him
with ungrateful hearts.
Hannah and Elkanah (1 Samuel
1,2), in their hopelessness, sought God
for a male child, vowing that they would
honour God, by offering the child back to
Him. Well! God did change their fortunes
too, by blessing them with Samuel. Isn’t it
natural for them to rethink, whether it is
truly worth to offer this ‘one and only’,
‘miracle boy’ back to God, for all his life?
What if Hannah could bear no more child?
In addition, they had a ritual sanction, for
to the Lord (Numbers 3:12,13; 18:15,16).
They rather choose to express their grati-
tude towards God, by means of a greater
commitment and sacrifice. Every time we
choose to respond to Him, not indifferent-
ly, but with a sense of deeper submission
and commitment.
