9 Start-up of First Subsea Well

As soon as the Kikeh South subsea production risers have been flushed and
warmed-up, the first subsea well is started up. At the time of starting-up the Kikeh
South wells, it is expected that three wells will have been drilled, completed and
‘ready to flow’.
CAUTION: THE CHOICE OF WHICH SUBSEA WELL TO BE STARTED-UP
FIRST SHOULD BE BASED ON THE LOWEST WAX APPEARANCE
! TEMPERATURE OF THE WELLS AVAILABLE FOR START-UP. THIS
HAZARD
WILL MINIMISE THE RISK OF WAX DEPOSITION WHILST
Haz 148
STARTING-UP.

Prior to the flushing and warming-up of the subsea risers takes place, the well
selected to be started-up first will have been prepared. This way no valuable time for
well preparations is lost after warming-up the risers. Crucial part of these
preparations is minimising the differential pressure across the SCSSV, by means of
methanol injection into the well. The well preparations are detailed in below section
9.1.

After the flushing and warming-up of the risers, the subsea risers will be manifolded
such that first subsea well fluids will be routed via the test swivel into the test
separator. In section 9.2 the line-up of the test system and turret manifolds is
detailed. In order to minimise valve line-up, PP-02 will be used to transfer first subsea
oil towards the FPSO. As on PP-02, the pig trap and its dedicated Y-strainer were
already lined-up to receive fluids during the flushing of the subsea risers.

In section 9.3, the actual start-up of the first subsea well is detailed.

9.1 PREPARATIONS FOR START-UP OF 1ST SUBSEA WELL

Before the subsea risers flushing and warming procedure commences, a pre-
selected subsea well should have been prepared for its first start-up. Preparations for
first well start-up comprise of the following, but are not limited to:

• Integrity testing of the SCSSV,

• integrity testing of the subsea tree valves,
• well clean-up / initial well performance test,
• displacing the well / drilling fluids with MGO from the well production tubing,
• equalising well tubing and reservoir pressures (zero DP across SCSSV),
• line-up of methanol injection facilities,
• line-up of wax inhibitor injection facilities,
• line-up of demulsifier injection facilities,
• line-up of corrosion inhibitor injection facilities.
It is foreseen that some of the above activities will be performed during the
drilling/well completion phase. In below procedure these activities are only mentioned
to be confirmed. Other activities related to activities performed on the FPSO are
discussed in more detail:

STEP ACTION CHECK

Activities Performed during Drilling / Well Completion Phase

Note: Below checks will be part of the well handover document “Kikeh Subsea Well
Handover Certificate”

1 Confirm the well has been fully handed over from drilling operations to
FPSO operations and well control is performed solely through the FPSO
control and safeguarding system.

2 Confirm that the hydraulic operation of all the well tree valves normally
controlled from the FPSO is active and not overridden through ROV
interaction (PMV, PWV, CV, AWV, AMV, CIDV1, CIDV2, CITV, MIDV &
MITV). Reference: KIK-KOPU-40-XT-DW-3000.

3 Confirm that the ROV operated valves are all set in the position for
normal operations.

4 Confirm the well has been mechanically completed.

5 Confirm that the integrity and correct operation of the well SCSSV has
been successfully tested.

6 Confirm that the integrity and correct operation of the well tree valves
have been successfully tested.

7 Confirm the well has been sufficiently cleaned-up after well completion.

9.2 LINE-UP FOR RECEIVING FIRST SUBSEA OIL

Upon completion of flushing the subsea risers, PP-01 and its pig trap have been
isolated. The pig trap on PP-02 remained lined-up for receiving fluids, whilst the riser
SDV is closed. Riser PP-02 is also still lined-up to the IP manifold. Additionally, the
pigging test system remains lined-up in ‘pigging’ mode.

Immediately after the flushing of the risers has been completed, preparations will be
made for receiving first subsea oil. In preparation for receiving first subsea oil, PP-02
will be lined-up to the test manifold and the test / pigging system will be lined-up in
‘test’ mode. Below procedure details these preparations to be performed for flushing
the PP’s with crude:

STEP ACTION CHECK

General

1 Ensure that the subsea risers PP-01 and PP-02 have been successfully
flushed and warmed with dead crude. Ensure that valves are left in
position as per the end of the flushing activities as described in section
8.2.

2 Confirm that the turret Y-strainer is clean and installed in the kicker
return line from Kikeh South 2 pig trap.

9.3 FIRST SUBSEA OIL

As soon as the preparations for receiving first subsea oil have been completed, the
pre-selected subsea well will be started-up and flown towards the FPSO. In below
section the procedure for starting-up the first subsea well is detailed:
Note: Whilst starting-up any new subsea well, the liquids will be routed through the
pig trap, such that the Y-strainer installed in the pig trap kicker return
line can protect the test swivel from any solids produced at the initial
start-up of the well. However by flowing through the pig trap, the FCV
normally used for slug control is bypassed. Care should therefore be
taken for riser slugs.

STEP ACTION CHECK

General

1 Confirm that a pre-selected well has been prepared for start-up, as

detailed in section 9.1.

2 Confirm that the subsea risers PP-01 and PP-02 have been prepared
for start-up by flushing with hot dead crude, as detailed in section 8.2.

3 Confirm that the turret and test system are lined-up to receive the liquids
from PP-02 as per section 9.2.
