Task 1: Lead-in and Interview (1 minute)

In pairs, the cadidates have a one-minute conversation with each other. If they don’t know each other, they find
out information about each other. If they do, they compare the things they have in common.

Good afternoon. My name is Mary and this is my

colleague Robert. So you are...

I am Lara Rougier.

And you are...

My name is Martin Gidner.

Do you know each other?

No.

No.

Then please ask questions to find out more

about the other person.

Martin, are you a student or do you work?

I’m studying medicine at university, this is my

final year. What do you do?

I do contract work for a design studio here,

I’m a graphic designer.

That’s really interesting! Do you live in the city?

Yes, I recently moved here from Belgium. Have

you ever been there?

Yes, actually. Last year I did my clinical practice

in Leuven...

Task 2: Presentation and Discussion (9 minutes)

In the preparation room the candidate has ten minutes to choose one of two statements and prepare a 2-minute
formal presentation. While one candidate is giving the presentation, the other candidate will listen and prepare
to start a discussion on the topic. Two minutes are allowed for the discussion. Then the procedure is repeated
with the other candidate.

In this part of the test, you are both going to give the
presentation you prepared earlier and you will then
have a discussion. Lara, which statement have you
decided to talk about?

1B: Family life is disappearing.

Good. Martin, I’d like you to listen, take notes, and

prepare to initiate a discussion on the topic with Lara
after the presentation. Lara, you may look at your
notes, but please do not read aloud from them. You
may start when you are ready and I will stop you after
about two minutes. You have 30 seconds to look
through your notes. Please start when you are ready.

Thank you. Martin, Mary, Robert; I’d like to talk about

how family life is disappearing today. First, I will look
at the reasons why we see people spending less and
less time with their families, then I will move on to
what the individual consequences are, and finally I
will discuss how this phenomenon affects society as
a whole.

Presentation continues for 2 minutes.

Thank you. You now have 2 minutes to discuss

the topic together. Martin, please can you start
the discussion now?

Yes. Lara, you are saying that families do not

communicate with each other as much as they
used to.

Yes.

I’m afraid I have to disagree. I actually think...

Task 3: Discussion (5 minutes)

The pair of candidates receives a card with four thematically linked images. These images are possible
illustrations for a poster, cover of a book, etc. on a given subject. First, they discuss which aspect of the topic
each image portrays. Then the two candidates debate which is the most suitable. Finally they discuss any
other suitable images they can think of. A total of five minutes is allowed for this task.

For the final part of the test you are going to talk with
each other about a task I will show you. Please look at the
topic sheet. When you are ready, please start.

Discussion: A Life Remembered

You have been asked to recommend an image for the front cover of a collection of short stories titled
‘A Life Remembered’. Look at these pictures.

First, look at each picture one by one and decide which aspect of the topic it portrays.
Then, think of other images you could include.
Finally, try to decide which images would be the most appropriate and why.

These pictures represent diferent stages in a

person’s life, so probably that’s why they are
here.

Right. It’s a good idea that they are black

and white, because the book is about older
people’s memories.

Yes. My problem with the childhood pictures is

that it’s just one stage in life.

But it’s an important one. Do you like the

one with the photos, then? It has several
generations.

Yes, it is definitely my favourite. Is there

anything else you think we could include?

At the end of the discussion task the speaking test is over.
