TERMINOLOGY

SET PRESSURE - The inlet gauge pressure at which the pressure relief device
is set to open under service conditions.

RELIEVING PRESSURE - The relieving pressure is equal to the valve set

pressure plus the overpressure.

OVERPRESSURE - The pressure increase over the set pressure of the relieving
device. Overpressure is expressed in pressure units or as a percentage of set
pressure. Overpressure is the same as accumulation only when the relieving
device is set to open at the maximum allowable working pressure of the vessel.

BACKPRESSURE - The pressure that exists at the outlet of a pressure relief

device as a result of the pressure in the discharge system. Backpressure is the
sum of the superimposed and built-up backpressures.

7
TERMINOLOGY (CONTD)

CLOSING PRESSURE - The value of decreasing inlet static pressure at which

the valve disc re-establishes contact with the seat or at which lift becomes zero
as determined by seeing, feeling or hearing.

MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE WORKING PRESSURE (MAWP) - The maximum gauge

pressure permissible at the top of a completed vessel in its normal operating
position at the designated coincident temperature specified for that pressure.
The maximum allowable working pressure is the basis for the pressure setting
of the pressure relief devices that protect the vessel.

ACCUMULATION - The pressure increase over the maximum allowable working

pressure (MAWP) of the vessel, expressed in pressure units or as a percentage
of MAWP or design pressure.

TERMINOLOGY (CONTD

BLOWDOWN - The difference between the set Pressure and the closing
pressure of a pressure relief valve, expressed as a percentage of the set
pressure or in Pressure units.
COLD DIFFERENTIAL TEST PRESSURE - The pressure at which a pressure
relief valve is adjusted to open on the test stand. The cold differential test
pressure includes corrections for the service conditions of backpressure or
temperature or both.

9
TERMINOLOGY (CONTD)

SIMMER - The audible or visible escape of compressible fluid between the seat
and disc of a PRV which may occur at an inlet static pressure below the set
pressure prior to opening. Vapor or gas service, PRV may ―simmer‖ before it will
―pop.‖

CHATTER - Abnormally rapid reciprocating motion of the PRV disc where the
disc contacts the PRV seat during cycling.

FLUTTER - Flutter is similar to chatter except that the disc does not come into
contact with the seat during cycling.

formula for reactive force on valve.

API 521 SCOPE

API-521 - PRESSURE-RELIEVING AND DE-PRESSURING SYSTEMS

• Gives guidelines for examining the principal causes of

overpressure.
• Determining individual relieving rates.
• Sizing equations gas filled vessels under fire.
• Sizing equations liquid filled vessels under fire.
• Does not apply to direct-fired steam boilers.

26
VACUUM RELIEF
Click to edit Master title style
GUIDANCE ON VACUUM RELIEF
Fall in operating pressure to the extent that vacuum relief is
required to prevent the equipment from failing under vacuum.

1. Large vessels and equipment designed for low positive pressures are more
susceptible to vacuum.

2. Damage to storage tanks as a result of vacuum / process vessels.

3. The volumetric outflow of material from the protected system exceeds the
inflow.

4. The energy outflow from the protected system exceeds the energy inflow.

27
VACUUM CAUSES
Click to edit Master title style
POSSIBLE CAUSES OF VACUUM

1. Removal of liquid from a vessel due to pump-out, siphoning or gravity

drainage.

2. Removal of vapour from a vessel by attachment to

pumps/compressors.

3. Ambient temperature changes, resulting in contraction of the vapour space,

significant issue for storage tanks (API Std 2000 ).

4. Condensation of vapour.

5. Blockage of vents designed to allow inflow of gas or vapour to prevent a

damaging vacuum from forming. This is principally an issue for storage
tanks .

28
FIRE
ClickEFFECT
to edit Master title style
EFFECT OF FIRE ON WETTED SURFACE OF VESSEL
1. Determine vapour generation, it is necessary to recognize only that portion
of the vessel that is wetted by its internal liquid and is equal to or less than
7,6 m (25 ft) above the source of flame.

2. Relieving temperatures are often above the design temperature of the

equipment being protected.

3. The wetted area for spheres normally includes all area up to the maximum
diameter.

4. Minimum, the wetted surface area of the entire bottom hemisphere shall be
used even when the sphere ―equator‖ exceeds 7,6 m (25 ft) in height.
