CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction
This chapter contains the methodology used to study inventory management and its techniques
to find the answers to the research questions that the researcher intends to answer with
proper defining of the methods used and why they are used for this particular case study and
by doing so the researcher will defend the wide approach of the limited and focused case study
of Inventory Management.
Basically the main aim of the research is to find a suitable study regarding the inventory
management as to use it practically in the organization and to be able to read the patterns of
the conduct of inventory management and how to use it, and when to construct it based on the
worldly situations which are unforced and unpredicted in nature. To understand various
techniques and methods to minimize cost by forecasting and interpreting previous data for a
better understanding of forecasting which can effect on the organization’s inventory holding
capacity. To get the knowledge of understanding different types of inventories in an
organization and use the techniques practically to resolve day to day inventory issues.
In this chapter the researcher will provide the techniques, tools and procedures used for
collecting data, and the reliability of data which will be presented and interpreted in the
following chapter. This chapter includes the research designs which will consist of the type of
research, the philosophy used, the research type and strategy, time horizon, sampling and data
collection methods used, data analysis techniques used and the limitations of the methodology
and the case study. Researcher will specify the various methods used in the quantitative
research for finding out the answers for the research questions. The researcher will try to
accomplish all the possible methodological aspects and will try to cover all that is related to this
particular chapter. As the topic is vast and has a big scope the researcher will also give the
limitations for the methods that is used and the proper reasoning behind giving out those
limitations.
3.2 Research design
The Researcher adopted quantitative and qualitative research design where the quantitative data will
focus on the actual inventory management data of the company and how they maintain and manage it
and the qualitative data will focus on the theoretical aspects the company used for better management
of the data. The study undertook the description of various kinds of inventories, costs associated with
keeping the inventory control and the impact of inventory management on company’s operations. The
study also adopted a qualitative research design involving description and analysis of data.

In detail the quantitative data will be collected as a summation of the yearly data which the organization
stores and how they manage and maintain it, methods of reordering or restoring inventory, the various
interpretations of data, forecasting of the existing data, percentage of inventory stored in the company,
demand and supply according to the trend in sales and production, classification and types of
inventories and handling various types of data techniques of inventory management.

The philosophy used by the researcher is Positivism where the researcher will observe the reality
objectively with the existing set of data gathered and will be collecting the data with the use of the
company’s records. The researcher will also be open with the new ideas and methods to make sure that
inventory is managed in a better way using theoretical knowledge. The researcher will objectively use
the data and use the philosophy of Interpretivism with positivism. That way the researcher can look at
the case study in both subjective and objective manner.

The research type will be deductive type where the researcher will start with gathering the established
theory of the research first and builds on to it and relate the theory with the collected qualitative and
quantitative data from the organization. As this type of research tends to collect information and
acquire knowledge of the pre-existing theory first and then interprets on the data the studies tend to be
a confirmatory type in its approach.

The research strategy for the researcher is a case study based on the analytical data which provides
information of how inventory management can affect the organization in an essential way without
disclosing the prices of the commodities and maintaining the integrity with the organization.

The time horizon of the case study will be longitudinal that is the data which will be collected at multiple
points in time, this type of time horizon is used by the researcher as to collect the data from correct
resources which is verified and applied in the industry. It is also used because the data is already applied
and used to make amendments or changes to adapt a better system or processes in order to maintain
and manage the inventory items.

The data sampling will be done in a non-representative manner also known as convenience sample or
non-randomized sample, where the researcher will not carry the research in a random manner but will
know the data sources prior to collection of the data and then use the collection strategies on them.
Basically to make sure the data is accurate no randomizing of sample from the population will be made
rather everything will be specific and convenient in its non-random manner.

The researcher will also follow the quantitative and analytical methods of data collection whereby the
data will be collected from the set of pre-existing and applied data and will be represented thoroughly in
explain the various techniques and tactics for Inventory Management in the organization.
