Question #1

A two story idealized shear frame building is shown below. The story heights are 3m each and the
damping ratio is 5%. The structure is subjected to harmonic horizontal force P(t) = 20sin4t (in KN)
at the top floor. K = 100,000KN/m and m = 100,000Kg. Considering the steady state solution only,
determine the following.

1. The mass and stiffness matrix of the system


2. The natural period and mode shape of the system.
3. The displacement in each mode
4. The total floor displacements
5. The maximum roof displacement due to the excitation
