Reasons for Problem-based Learning

The PBL Classroom
Problem-based Learning Workshop

Students should be given problems—at levels

appropriate to their maturity—that require them to
decide what evidence is relevant and to offer their
own interpretations of what the evidence means.
…, on careful observation and thoughtful analysis.
Students need guidance, encouragement, and
practice in collecting, sorting, and analyzing
evidence, and in building arguments based on it.
However, if such activities are not to be
destructively boring, they must lead to some
intellectually satisfying payoff that students care
about.
(AAAS, 1989, p. 148).

At your table, number off 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Look for the slides that are labelled 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Read the one that you have been “numbered”.
Look for three other participants in this room who
have the same number… form a group and share
what you have read.
Which part of the definition do you agree with?
Why do you agree with that?
What is one question you might have with
regard to this definition?
We have 15 minutes for this.
Return to your seat when you are done.
Share what you have learnt from your friends with
members at your table.
1 What is PBL?
Problem-based Learning Workshop

PBL is an education process that

requires the learner to go through
some activities during the learning
that are valued in the real world…
the intent is to challenge the learner
with problems found in practice both
as a stimulus for learning and a focus
for organising what has been learnt
Barrows (1986)

2 What is PBL?
Problem-based Learning Workshop

An educational approach that

organizes curriculum and instruction
around carefully crafted “problematic
situations” adapted from real-world
issues.
Learners gather and apply knowledge
from multiple disciplines in their quest
for solutions.
Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA, 2001)

Understanding Problem-based Learning

3 What is PBL?
Problem-based Learning Workshop

It is one method of learning, in which

a problem is presented to the students
and they will solve the problem with
whatever knowledge they acquire
along the way.
Through this, they learn not just the
content, but also process skills and
problem solving skills that they can
apply in real life.
(Tan, O.S., 2003)

4 What is PBL?
Problem-based Learning Workshop

PBL is a learner-centered learning

process in which the learning
environment embodies most of the
principles that improve learning as
well as providing a context for
learning which leads to greater levels
of learner engagement.

Woods (1995)

Because I was carrying this.

HELP ME!
Problem-based Learning Workshop

Can you help me by either

through a demonstration
using a lab report
through a deck of slides
using poster with explanation
using an animation or video
explain to the custom officers that I was not
carrying anything illegal? For investigation,
they need to know
what this is… what is the use of it…,
how come it has this colour and shape, and
any other useful info that may help.
