Summary:
I had the pleasure of meeting with a teacher that works on campus and a staff member
that works in the office of Sunset Vista. I talked to them more about what the mission and vision
statement means to them and how they think it affects our students and the culture of the school.
The teacher felt that the mission and vision statement of the school really advocated for the
students to have a high expectation of learning. The teacher felt that through the use of
technology in and out of the classroom the students were able to communicate and show their
love of learning and the school in ways they might have not used before. The staff member
agreed that the students this year got to know what the mission of the school was and teachers
were implementing the mission every day in lessons and making sure the environment was safe
and engaging to learn in. These two interviews gave me insight into the fact that Sunset Vista is
adhering to Standard 1 C of the PSEL standards, “Articulate, advocate, and cultivate core values
that define the school’s culture and stress the imperative of child-centered education; high
expectations and student support; equity, inclusiveness, and social justice; openness, caring, and
trust; and continuous improvement.” (National Policy Board for Educational Administration,
2015). I want to use this information to apply to my future professional practices by following
Mrs. Baker’s leadership style in implementing a school's mission and vision. Mrs. Baker has
used the mission and vision as a guide to how she leads the students and staff members. She lives
and breathes by these statements and gets her staff to do the same.
