Benefits of Induction Plan

The teachers that I interviewed on my campus felt that they were welcomed onto campus

with open arms and were very impressed with how they had content training just for them and

not having to be mixed in with other content all the time. They also like how they were given

time in their classrooms to work after trainings or during training days.

Teacher Induction Plan Interview

The teachers shared with me that the trainings on our school campus included a lot of

procedures that we do at L. Thomas Heck and how the day-to-day is run. They also mentioned

that in the content trainings the instructional coaches helped them to understand how the first few

weeks should run and look in each subject area. One of the new teachers is our band teacher and

she has to travel from our school and another school, she mentioned to me that she felt like our

campus was more friendly and welcoming than the other campus she has. She mentioned that at

the other school she really had no trainings there or knowledge about who was in charge or

information about the staff and students.

New Knowledge and Two More Questions

Knowing what the induction plan is and hearing how well everything went I would say

that improvement areas are showing new teachers how to set up their classrooms so that it is an

engaging environment would be beneficial. I also feel like having a clear understanding of how

to properly share with a teacher is important so that way the teacher feels welcomed and

comfortable on each campus. I asked the new teachers that now they are through the first quarter

do they feel like the content trainings prepared them for their classrooms? All of the teachers felt

that they did. I also asked the new teachers if there was anything else that could have been done
differently during the trainings. Many on our campus felt like we could have covered the

behavior plan we have at our school a little more thoroughly than just speeding over it at all staff

return week.

PSEL Standards 6 and 7 and Implications for Future Practices

Overall, I would say that L. Thomas Heck covered standard 6 b “ Plan for and manage

staff turnover and succession, providing opportunities for effective induction and mentoring of

new personnel.” (National Policy Board for Educational Administration, 2015) They managed to

train 15 new staff members and out of the 15 we had 3 new teachers in that group. I also feel like

L. Thomas Heck “Develop and support open, productive, caring, and trusting working

relationships among leaders, faculty, and staff to promote professional capacity and the

improvement of practice” (National Policy Board for Educational Administration, 2015) Seeing

that all the new teachers feel welcome and a part of our school family. For future practices, I

would like to also make my new staff feel welcome on my campus every day they are there. I

know that one day the principal and the assistant principal bought breakfast for all the new staff

and just sat and talked with them for about an hour and that is something I would like to

incorporate.
