Clinical Field Experience D: Protecting the Welfare and Safety of Students and Staff

Through this field experience I got to review my school’s emergency plan including the,

drill schedule, action steps to address adverse situations in the school setting, and district

policies relating to student and staff safety. The steps listed tells staff and student how they

should react during all emergencies, drills, and nearest exit points in their current location. Also

during this field experience I go to interview my principal mentor.

During the interview she stated that the most important tasks related to keeping students

and staff safe on the school campus is making sure that they are all properly prepared for any

emergency situation that may arise while on school campus. She said that she felt the school

campus was safe for students and staff but mentioned that there is always room for improvement.

She felt that students and staff were handling their selves well during drills and that we have

done a great job of making sure that our classroom doors are locked. One safety measure that she

think would benefit our school would be the addition of metal detectors to makes sure that no

one is bringing unwanted weapons/materials into the school. Teachers are train for emergency

situations through professional developments and through the monthly safety drills that we have

to practice the knowledge that we have learned.  Safety or emergency information is

communicated to families and/or the community, through the following methods at our school

through phone, email, and newsletters that are sent home by students.

I will apply what I have learned to my future professional practice to makes sure that my

school campus is safe and staff and students are prepared when an emergency may arise on our

school campus. This is important because failing to prepare is preparing for failure. This most

closely aligns to PSEL standards 5&8 which states “Effective educational leaders cultivate an

inclusive, caring, and supportive school community that promotes the academic success and
3

well-being of each student.”, and “Effective educational leaders engage families and the

community in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways to promote each student’s

academic success and well-being.”
