Orders Database
• Where the original order is held
• Cleared for tests that are resulted and should hold remaining tests
to be run

LIS System
Orders Parsing
• Reformats the LIS test name to an analyzer analyte code for orders
(GLU to “300”)
• Reformats the specimen type to an analyzer fluid code (Serum to
“5”)

LIS System
Orders Queue
• Either sends the orders to all the analyzers (Broadcast Download)
or sends to one analyzer (Host Query)
• May be called a Download List, Batch, etc. by the LIS

Parsing
LIS System
Results Parsing
• Converts the analyte code (300) back to GLU, and the fluid code (5)
back to Serum
• Interprets the analyzer’s test flags and codes (ex: flag 4 to above
analyzer range, ME to mechanical error, Q equals negative etc.)

Verification / Validation:
• Could be manual, automated, or both
• Sends results to the hospital / doctor
• Deletes completed tests from the Orders Database

Codes you will see in LIS log:
<ENQ> Establishment Phase – “Hello”
<ACK> Session underway – “I’m listening”
<STX> Start of transmission
<ETB> End of text block
<ETX> End of text
<EOT> Termination Phase
<LF> Line feed
<CR> Carriage return
Remember This???
What Is That?
Result Formatting Screen: allows special characters to be
sent across like </>, qualitative results, and upload
extended results (lot #s, cal data, qc, diluents,
reprocessing)
Barcode Config Screen: check box if site is using check digit.
A check digit is a number that is embedded in a barcode but
it is not a number that you yourself can see. If you check
these boxes then the analyzer will be looking for check
digits in those specific barcodes.
Loopback Tool: used to ensure that the analyzer will talk and
listen properly through the serial port. When testing the
connection dsr and cts must be preceded by a positive
sign.
Dilutions
• Manual dilutions sent only once and should be 1.000. The
1.0 after the + and test code is for the onboard analyzer
dilution. Technically the LIS can order an onboard dilution if
wanted.
Example:
1.000+300+1.0\303+1.0|S|
