The corroborations that support my assertion are: 1. There is a general frustration over
the Duterte government’s pandemic response, which has been characterized by an
overreliance on prolonged militarized lockdowns. 2. The Commission on Elections
(Comelec) will decide on various petitions, but its most important case is whether to
allow former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, the son and namesake of the
late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, to run for president despite being a convicted tax
evader. 3. The election, scheduled for May 9, will give the country a new president,
vice president, 12 senators, and a new term for local officials.
The corroborations that support my assertion are: 1. Lack of income opportunities and
reduction of pay were pre-existing challenges but had worsened significantly due to the
pandemic. During the pandemic, communities reported continued insufficient food
supply and health, sanitation, and nutrition issues. 2. . Following significant job and
income losses, communities are at risk of further increases in poverty. In August 2020, job
losses were particularly severe in the construction sector (56%) and public transportation
(52%) while cumulative job losses were seen among informal workers such as laundry
women, hairdressers, and workers in small canteens; and in informal retail like “sari-sari”
stores, street vendors, and markets. The farming sector also saw significant job losses
reportedly in 70% of communities in formal agriculture and 61% in small-scale farming. 3.

Reason:
These lines from the article written under The Diplomat news website corroborates my
assertion as to address social issues, it requires the knowledge and actions of its
citizens to comply with the responsibilities they have in the society, more specifically;
of a micro, meso and macro duty that at the end of the day affects the larger
picture. The first evidence showed frustrations over a function in the society that
seemingly failed to perform the expected duties and responsibilities they have in the
society, this unresponsiveness and incomplience of the expected duties destabilizes
the society, as one function, is not performing properly as to how it should be.
Secondly, there are member/s of the society that have the responsibility to review
and cross check things, such as the COMELEC. At this time, they play an important
role in deciding the future of our State. They hold the power to allow rightful leaders
to govern this state or allow people with questionable background lead ‘the
Philippines’, this is where the realizations comes in on how, our society is too complex
and one member/ organization alone is not enough to balance the society out, to
keep it intact, stable and united and that is why there are functions in the society, for
that heavy duty to be shared, just like how we have the Commission on Elections, as
responsible in examining the aspiring leaders of the State that would determine the
next 6 years of the Philippines and the Filipino people. Lastly, just like how the
Executive branch of the Government and the independent commission on election
as provided under the 1987 Philippine Constitution and Commonwealth Act No. 607
(Commission on Elections, n.d.), have responsibilities of their own in the society, we as
citizens of the Philippines, have ours too, we have a fair share of responsibility that
stabilizes the society such as; the obligation to create the government that would
work and serve the Philippines for the next 6 years, the act of voting is not just a mere
privilege, but an obligation that we have for our State. We are obliged to show up
and vote with our hopes for a better country, but as we do that, we are not only
carrying our personal hopes, we are carrying the hopes of that one farmer who
struggles to sell his products, the hopes of a 4 year-old kid sitting in front of the Church
begging for money, or of that one single-mother working 12 hours a day just to be
able to provide for her children, our obligations in the society, goes beyond our
personal interests and hopes, it is more than what we want for ourselves, but also on

assertion in addressing social issues as doing so requires social awareness, this means,
being able to see things not just from a single stance and perspective but seeing it from
multiple perspectives. Leading to a more objective perspective that would eventually
result in an objective action taken. The first and second evidence showed the unequal
opportunities in the society especially in this time of pandemic, where many have lost
their jobs, thus are not given the chance to earn and support their families. The farmers,
the hairdressers, the construction sector and public transportation, experience this
massive decrease when it comes to opportunities and profit. This statistics shows the
inequality in the society, how there is an unequal distribution of chances, opportunities
and resources. It is not that this issue was not present before, just that it exacerbated
during the time of pandemic, the gap became wider, leading to that evident implication
of class divide and social inequality, the same elements resulting in divisions in the society.
Lastly, opportunities and access to jobs and profit are not the only components of
inequality in society, gender also is a wide topic leading to inequality. The violence
against women for instance that was said to exacerbate during this time of pandemic
shows how unequal distribution and unequal respect to the distributed rights causes
inequality to occur. This issue is a systematic problem in the society; the silenced women,
the unheard women, the abused, the oppressed and the deprived women of their rights
and the equal opportunities as men are given, are issues that have continuously haunted
women, in this time of isolation a lot experienced abuse and this shows how dominance
of one over the other, is still an issue in today’s society, which should not be in the first
place, as the constitution envisioned equal respect to people of any gender in the
Philippines, as per the 1987 Philippine Constitution, moreover this is strengthened by the
Article III, Sec.3 of the 1987 Constitution that shows the States’ responsibility to provide
equal and full employment opportunities for all (Official Gazette, n.d.). These are general
principles of law, therefore creating an internal obligation to abide by, but in this time of
pandemic, that obligation to submit to the foundation of our State which is our
constitution, seems to be unseen. The evident increase of opportunity and gender gap in
the society divides the Philippines. Thus, to address the issues in our society we can view
things using the Conflict perspective to be aware of the inequality present and on what it
brings in the society.
