MPACC 1304: Strategic Management Accounting

Group Assignment on the current product costing and pricing practice/s in a Sri Lankan
business entity

Marks for the group assignment will be awarded as follows:


 Proposal 05 marks
 Final Report 20 marks
 Presentation 15 marks

General information
 Students are required to form groups of four to five members (i.e., min 4 and max 5), and one
group member should be appointed as the group leader.

 The group leader should fill in the 'Group Details' document uploaded to the LMS on or before
07.05.2022.

 Each group should select an organization for which they have access to internal information.
The company could be either a listed company, medium-sized enterprise or public sector
organization. The key selection criterion of a company should be sufficient access to information
(Please note that the assignment does not require any information on financial matters other than
turnover)

 Groups are not allowed to select the same organization.

Proposal
 Students should contact the selected company before submitting the proposal to ensure that they
can get the required information.

 A one-page proposal which contains the information about the organization, its main operation,
method of data collection and the details of the main contact person should be submitted online
using the 'Proposal Submission' link by the group leader on or before 13.05.2022.

 Once the proposal is submitted, students will not be allowed to change groups or the selected
organization without the permission of the Course Coordinator.

Final report
 The main objective of the report is to:
To analyze and discuss how the selected organization carries out product costing and pricing
during this hyperinflationary period.

More specifically, the study will find out:


a. Product costing practice/s employed in the selected organization during this inflationary
period
b. How do the present costing practices differ from the previous costing practices that
existed during the normal business periods
c. Product pricing practice/s employed in the selected organization during this inflationary
period
d. How do the present pricing practices differ from the previous costing practices that
existed during the normal business period

 
e. The challenges faced by the organization concerning costing and pricing practices
f. Issues identified in the costing and pricing process

 Students should collect data from multiple sources such as questionnaires, interviews,
documentary analysis, etc. The interviews for data gathering should ideally involve Management
Accountants, CFOs and/or Finance Managers involved in the product costing and pricing
processes.

 Report format
The suggested structure for the report is as follows;
 Title page
 Chapter 1: Introduction to the selected company (beginning, main operation/s,
management, markets operated, competitors, customers, etc.) and objective of the
assignment
 Chapter 2: Literature review (what is given in the literature regarding the costing and
pricing practices used, alternative approaches during hyperinflationary periods,
international experiences, etc.)
 Chapter 3: Method (data collection and data analysis)
 Chapter 4: Discussion on the costing and pricing practices followed by the selected
organization & evaluation
 References
 Appendices, if any

 The number of pages of the report should not exceed 10 pages, excluding the references. The
following should be excluded in counting the number of pages of the report; the title page and
appendices, if any.

 If the report is not submitted on the due date, 20% of marks assigned to it will be reduced for
each day of delay.

 The report's title page MUST BE signed by each member of the group as follows.

 The format of the report should be as follows:


 Times New Roman font, 12 Font size, 1½ spacing, 1-inch margin for Top, Bottom, Left
and Right
 References: Follow Harvard referencing style.
 Students are advised to refer to the following book for further clarification about the
presentation of the report.

Group Presentations
 The time allocated for each presentation is 20 minutes.
 The group presentations will be scheduled as follows:

 S15 - 9/7/2022
