green and shared mobility in the PMR

• Accordingly, the Board of Directors (BoD) of

PMPML have resolved that all new buses procured
hereinafter shall be either Electric or CNG Buses.
Fully Electric AC Bus Operated by PMPML
• PMPML is the largest operator of Electric fully air-
conditioned buses in India with 150 operational
Electric Buses in its fleet.

• In line with the above stated objective, PMPML has

procured 840 eco-friendly CNG Buses via

Urban Transport & Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions
• The largest growth in GHG emissions between 1970 and 2015 has come from energy supply, transport and industry while
deforestation, agriculture and residential/commercial buildings are only minor contributing factors.*

Sector-wise GHG Emission

City Transportation Industrial Waste Electricty Domestic Others
1 Mumbai 17.41% 7.81% 8.60% 23.44% 37.20% 5.54%

• According to a recent study for—Delhi, Kanpur, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai conducted by the Central
Pollution Control Board, the transport sector is responsible for majority of NOX & 30-50 per cent of PM emissions in
these cities

CBG : A Clean, Secure, Commercially Viable Replacement for
Fossil Fuels
• CBG is a commercially viable
Benefits to Enhance the
sustainable fuel and is made
Local Life Cycle Cost
Communities of Transport from food and organic wastes.

• It is virtually free of particulate

GHG Emissions (soot) emissions and has close to
Reduction
zero net carbon impact.

• Slashes carbon emissions to

near zero: CBG’s carbon
footprint, measured over the “life
cycle” of the fuel’s production,
transport and use, is the lowest
of any vehicle fuel that is
commercially available today.

Page 8
Characteristics of CBG
CBG is an alternative, non petroleum based renewable
source of energy. :
▪ Constituents : Methane (96 - 98%), CO2 (2 - 4%)
▪ Source : Obtained from food waste or any other
organic waste from agricultural and non agricultural
sources.
▪ Pressure : 250BarG
▪ State of Matter : Gaseous fuel, allowing more than
95% combustion efficiency
▪ Calorific Value : 8657 kCal/Nm3 or 11200 kCal/Kg
▪ Density : 0.773 Kg/Nm3
▪ Dew Point : (-) 60 degrees Celsius
▪ Safety : Easily disperses, hence risk of ignition is
minimized
▪ Handling : CBG is stored in trailer mounted cascades,
no handling required
▪ Stoichiometry Air Fuel ratio : 9.8 : 1.0 (Ensures
minimum un-burnt fuel wastages)
▪ Combustion : Requires less air and clean fuel leads
to zero emission

Innovative Bio-CNG/Recycled Bio-Fuel
Project implemented by PMPML

11 Business Plan for Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited

Project Background – From City Waste to City Bus
• Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad produce more than
350,000 metric tons of food waste on annual
basis.

• Food waste is a type of organic garbage which is

hard to be disposed in the traditional manner
through landfill and incineration.

• To effectively combat this menace of food

waste, PMPML has implemented Bio-CNG fuel
generated from Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to
power its CNG Bus fleet

• PMPML is the first large transport entity in

India to employ eco-friendly Bio-CNG/CBG fuel
for its urban bus operations.

Page 12
Current Status of Project and Commercial Aspects
• PMPML has initiated usage of CBG
Fuel in 20 operational CNG Buses

• The performance of the CNG Buses

using CBG fuel has been found to be
identical to the CNG Buses running on
regular CNG.

• The procurement cost per Kg for CBG

is approximately same as that of
regular CNG.

• No modifications are required in the

Engine of the Bus for deploying CBG
Fuel.

Way Forward – Driving Green Mobility in the PMR
• At present, PMPML is consuming CBG generated from
only 300 metric tons of food waste on daily basis.

• Pursuant to review of the operation parameters of the

CNG Buses, PMPML shall consider augmenting its
entire fleet of CNG Buses with eco-friendly and non-
polluting CBG Fuel

• PMPML has already procured 150 non-polluting Electric

AC Buses and has already initiated procurement of 500
additional Electric AC Buses via Gross Cost Contract
(GCC) mode

• Considering the above initiatives, PMPML has far

exceeded the pollution reduction targets as mandated
by different Competent Authorities in India.
