The source entails former President Corazon Aquino’s speech before the Joint Session

of the US Congress and when talking about; when the source was produced - logically,
President Corazon Aquino probably prepared it weeks or even months before the day of the
said session but in terms of the transcribed source which I used for this analysis, I believe it was
on the day when the speech was delivered - September 18, 1986 based on the date stated in
the website where it came from which is the Official Gazette. Moreover, the transcribed source
was also created or transcribed in the Official Gazette website which is the online version of the
print edition of the official journal of the Republic of the Philippines, the Official Gazette and they
probably transcribed it from the President’s delivery of the actual speech at Washington D.C
although, I cannot be so sure since it was not explicitly stated in the website. Moving on, in my
understanding, President Corazon Aquino’s speech tackled quite a number of points which are;
her husband’s experiences during the Martial Law as evidenced by “they locked him up in a tiny,
nearly airless cell in a military camp in the north. They stripped him naked and held the threat of
sudden midnight execution over his head” in the source, her and the Filipino people’s journey
towards reclaiming democracy; “you saw women poll watchers break out in tears as armed
goons crashed the polling places to steal the ballots but, just the same, they tied themselves to
the ballot boxes”, and her plans and desire in preserving democracy by means of tackling both;
her plans on how to deal with the existing communist insurgency in the country; “… we must
seek to bring the insurgents down from the hills and, by economic progress and justice …”, and
rationalizing why the country deserves to be granted with a financial aid as evidence by “half our
export earnings, $2 billion out of $4 billion, which was all we could earn in the restrictive markets
of the world, went to pay just the interest on a debt” in the source.

The speech was based on President Corazon Aquino’s point of view as she tries to
narrate to a foreign audience the events during, how things came to be, and how things are
today and will be after the oppressive dictatorship. With the source being based on President
Corazon Aquino’s point of view, this explains the substantial recognition that Benigno Aquino Jr.
received from the speech and the immense emphasis on Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and his cronies
as being oppressive and abusive. Although, I believe that one could not conclude nor account
that this is a biased act as this may have its truths in it as per say, the unlawful detention of
Benigno Aquino Jr. In terms of intent, the speech was intended for the US Congress - it was for
all the American cabinet members, diplomats, senators and congressmen present in the
audience at that time as evidenced by the language used by President Corazon Aquino which
was English.
 The primary motive behind President Corazon Aquino’s speech was to appeal for
financial assistance from the Americans by informing them of the Philippines’ current state, and
she also seized this opportunity to convince American businessmen to invest in the Philippines.
