C. Aquino's Speech

1. Discuss at least two (2) issues during the Martial Law regime raised by Corazon Aquino in her
speech.

 Philippine President Corazon Aquino pledged to employ "the sword of war" to put an end
to the 17-year-long Communist insurgency in a speech before a joint session of Congress
that garnered three standing ovations. Corazon Aquino's welcome appeared to flare up
wherever she went on her maiden tour to the United States since becoming President.
When her commercial Philippine Airlines 747 landed at San Francisco International
Airport, she was met by roughly 1,000 fans who chanted, after she boarded a special U.S.
flight. The Philippine leader captivated White House officials with his plain, forthright
manner on the cross-country journey to Washington. Aquino also reserved her best
performance for a speech before the joint session of Congress, where legislators greeted
her with yellow ties and yellow flowers flying inward Texas, and color became Aquino's
hallmark.

 Senator Richard G. Luger, who is sponsoring a similar but long-stalled $200 million
assistance package in the Senate, said in an interview that he hopes Aquino's speech
would jolt movement on the bill, which is threatened by special-interest modifications.
President Corazon Aquino spoke at a joint session of Congress, promising to fight for the
Philippine government and return the country from the bloody communist revolution,
liberate the government from a ruined economy, and allow the United States government
and other private investors to build a new home for democracy in the Philippines.

1. What do you think was the motive of the producer in this documentary film?

 The documentary's target audience is current-generation Muslims and Christians, as well

as Filipinos as a whole, in order for them to have a better understanding of the historical
context of the two-religion debate. It is primarily directed at Filipino Muslims in the nation,
with the goal of making them aware of their historical significance. It is intended for those
audiences who are familiar with the English language because it is a pure English
documentary, but it is also intended to inform Filipino citizens about the origins of
Mindanao as a Muslim-populated area, as well as the Muslim-Christian rivalry that still
exists in Mindanao and other parts of the country. The documentary is aimed at educating
Filipinos about the country's Muslim heritage and demonstrating how fiercely the Moro
battle for their rights against Spanish domination.
