I have worked as an intern in our community-based health facility, where I interacted

with many patients, visitors and staff. While working in the healthcare facility as a nursing

intern, I was tasked with engaging and interacting with patients who came for medical checkups

in the hospitals. I gained so many experiences interviewing patients with simple and general

questions about their height, weight, symptoms and other health-related information that I need

to fill in the hospital database. Further, I interviewed the patients on their knowledge about

mental health, healthy nutrition and other healthy practices that would assist them in maintaining

their general wellbeing.

Effective communication is key to carrying interviews with the patients and gathering

data. Some of my communication skills that helped me conduct the interviews and gather

patient’s information include listening to the patient's complaints and providing solutions,

showing concern and care to their wellbeing. Furthermore, I was able to portray myself in a

friendly way, use appropriate tone and body language to foster my communication with the

individual patients. In addition, my ability to speak in more than one dialect enabled me to

communicate and interview the patients in their most preferred language that they understood

best.

However, despite my competent communication skills, I still have some qualities that

may hinder my ability to gather information and collect data from the interviews. First, I usually

feel uncomfortable interacting with male patients requiring sensitive medical information or

experiencing male-related ailments. The tension and inside fear may hinder me from gathering

sufficient information regarding the patient’s sickness. Further, the patient may also note my

shyness or uncomfortable state and therefore fail to open up clearly. To overcome these

obstacles, I am researching more information about the males' specific ailments and interacting

with my male colleagues and supervisors to help me overcome the condition.
