INTRODUCTION

Career Counseling is a process that will help you to know and understand
yourself and the world of work in order to make career, educational, and life
decisions. Career development is more than just deciding on a major and what job you
want to get when you graduate.

There are many aspects of career counselling that makes the entire process very convenient
and
useful for the students. The most important benefit it provides is a safe environment, the
counselor ensures that the students feel free to share their problems with them and they try to
analyze them
with logical feedback. The counselor, throughout the assessment, shows his empathy towards
the student which helps the student to open up in a better way. It is necessary for the
counselor to
create a safe space, so that the students can inform them about then developmental issues.
Counselors, in order to, obtain information about the student’s aptitude and personality
conducts
Psychometric Assessments. Through these assessments and personal interviews, the
counselor
helps the students to rectify any unwanted behavioral patterns and career-related frustration.
Therefore, the counselors ensure that the student’s life becomes more organized by giving
them
logical assessment.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
Education in the world and particularly in Pakistan is based on to get the opportunities for
better careers. Therefore, it is a crucial matter to provide a proper career counselling &
mentoring to students to meet the challenges of the practical life.
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
The scientific and career developments have changed the structure of society which includes
the career primarily, therefore, we need to plan the career of children as per ability and
capabilities from the very early stages of the educator. Core guiding and counselling will help
the students in the following manners:
1. To intellectually help the students.
2. To assist them in the proper choice of courses.
3. To facilitate them in the selection of courses.
4. To help them in vocational development in order to match the right person for the
right job.
METHODOLOGY/PROCEDURE
To check whether the career counselling and mentoring is observed at college level, we a
group of three female assistant professors and two male assistant professors was made. It was
decided that boy’s colleges of Peshawar would be visited by male professors while, the girl’s
colleges would be visited through female faculty.
It was observed that there was no specific cell of career counselling and mentoring at college
level. The procedure was carried out through student’s affairs counsel & character building
society which are responsible to resolve the issues of students as well as to conduct seminars
regarding different topics.
RESEARCH DESIGN
A descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The main purpose of this type
of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied? Data
collection from respondents for this survey was done using a questionnaire.
The study was conducted in all Government Colleges for Boys and Girls Peshawar.
The population of the study comprised of one hundred randomly selected students in the
different colleges. The sampling technique in this study was the probability sampling
technique where every student in the population had equal chance of being included in the
sample.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following item questionnaire designed by the group of professors was used to draw out
responses from the respondents:
1. Is there any career counselling in your college?
2. Does career choice affect the academic performance of the students?
3. Why is career guidance important for the students?
4. Does does career counselor help the students?
5. Are parents the determinants of career selection of students?
6. Do parental preferences have positive impact on student’s career?
DATA ANALYSIS AND RESULTS
The responses of the respondents for each statement in the questionnaire were analyzed. The
findings are presented in the following table in terms of percentage.

1 Is there any career counselling in your college?
Hundred percent of the respondents for this question were of the view that there is no
career counselling facility in their institutions. Therefore, the students have to decide
about their career either by themselves or by their parents.
2 Does career choice affect the academic performance of the students?
Sixty percent of the respondents replied that the choice of career affect the academic
performance of the students while forty percent made their decisions for no effect. It
means that the career selection has a main role in the student’s academic performance.
3 Is career guidance important for the students?
Only twenty percent students replied in yes while the remaining eighty percent students
replied in “No” as there is no proper guidance counsel in their college.
4 Does career counsellor help the students?
Half of the students replied in “Yes” whereas the remaining half in “No”.
5 Are the parents the determinants of career selection of students?
As the response of question 1 showed that there is no career counselling facility in the
institutions, the response for this question showed that 67% percent students declared their
parents as determinants of their career selection while 33% respondents oppose the given
statement.
6 The responses for this question indicate that without student’s interest, the parent’s
suggestion for career selection badly affect the career of the students. 68% students replied
that the parents have negative impact on their career while 32% students replied in favor of
the parent’s selection.
CONSCLUSION
This study was conducted to investigate that “Is career planning and mentoring of students
observed in colleges”? A sample of one hundred students was selected from all Boys & Girls
Colleges of Peshawar. The tool used was a questionnaire comprising of six questions and was
provided to the students. Hypothesis were formulated and tested. From analysis of the data
collected in this study, it can be concluded that due to lack of proper career counselling in the
institutions most of the students select their career themselves or under the influence of their
parents which negatively affect their academic performance.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In the light of the findings made in this study, it is recommended that at college level, proper
counselling should be provided to the students for the selection of their career. The students
should be encouraged to utilize their power of decision, regarding their career selection. It is
also recommended that the multiplicity of natures of the different careers, need oriented and
updated curricula which may be designed through the concern quarters.
