WORDS OFTEN CONFUSED

1. A lot / Allot

A lot - (much) കുറെ


Eg:-
• A lot of students were absent today.

Allot- to give (especially a share of something available) for a


particular purpose.
Eg:-
• They allotted separate seats for the old.
• You should finish within the allotted time.

2. Accept / Except / Expect

Accept - to receive with favour, consent (അംഗീകരിക്കുക)


Eg:
• He accepted my invitation.

Except – not including; other than (ഒഴിറക)


Eg: -
• Milan works everyday except Sunday

Expect – regard/ believe something as likely to happen


(പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുക)
E.g.: -
• I didn’t expect such a behaviour from you

3. Adapt / Adopt

Adapt - to adjust (റരൊരുത്തറെടുക)


Eg:-
• Deepa quickly adapted to the hostel life.
Adopt – accept as your own ( ദറത്തടുക്കുക)
Eg:-
• My neighbour adopted a girl
-choose to take up (സ്വീകരിക്കുക, തിരിറെടുക്കുക)
Eg:-
• She adopted their suggestions

4. Believe / Belief

Believe (verb). വിശ്വസ്ിക്കുക


Eg:-
• He believes that he can do it.

Belief –(noun) വിശ്വൊസ്ം


Eg:-
• He has strong belief in god.

5. Dairy / Diary

Dairy - a farm where milk and milk products are produced.


Eg:-
• Ram owns a huge dairy farm.

Diary – the daily journal kept to write about the day or our thoughts
and feelings
Eg:-
• Meena write in her diary for two hours every night.

6. Eligible / Illegible

Eligible – Qualified sufficiently (യ ൊഗയത )


Eg:-
• Only people over 18 are eligible to vote.
• I am eligible for that job.
Illegible – not readable
(because of being very untidy or not clear) (അവയക്തമൊണ്)
Eg:-
• His writing is almost illegible.

7. Empathy / Sympathy

Empathy - Ability to understand another person’s perspective or


feeling. (സ്മൊനുഭൊവം, സ്ഹൊനുഭൂതി)
Eg:-
• Mother Teresa empathised with the poor.

Sympathy – feeling of sorrow for someone else's suffering


(സ്ഹതൊരം )
Eg:-
They had great sympathy for the flood victims

8. Loose / Lose

Loose - not tight; until or let go of something.


Eg:-
• The door handle fell off because it was too loose.

Lose - to not have something anymore


Eg:-
• I don't want my team to lose the game
• She will lose the money if she is careless.

9. Presence / Presents

Presence - state of being nearby. (സ്ൊന്നിദ്ധ്യം)


Eg:-
• I wished for your presence when I was feeling sad / low.

Presents - gifts (സ്മ്മൊനം)


Eg:-
• She got a number of presents on her wedding day.
10. There / Their

There- There refers to place that is not here


Eg:-
• We will be there in 2 hours.

Their - possessive of they


Eg:-
• The twins left their book at home.

11. Vacation/ Vocation

Vacation - Period for rest or holidays.


Eg:-
• Enjoy your vacation

Vocation - the work in which one is regularly employed. (റതൊഴിൽ)


Eg: She struggled for years to find her true vocation

12. Weak / Week

Weak - not strong, not good enough.


Eg:-
• The performance was very weak.

Week - the names of seven days from Sunday to Saturday.


Eg:- • Let's go for a trip next week.

13. Weather / Whether

Weather - weather has to do with climate. (കൊലൊവസ്ഥ)


Eg:-
• The weather was beautiful today.
Whether - 'If' - used inside sentence.
Eg:-
• I don't know whether to bring an umbrella or not.
