VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS-1
Experiment Number-2
Date:

Aim: To Determine the molarity of NaOH solution using a standard
solution of Oxalic acid (COOH
.2H2O
COOH
Theory:
Eauation of the reaction involved: COOH COONa
+2NaOH + 2H2O
COOH COONa

In this titration, NaOH (aq) neutralizes Oxalic acid (aq). Phenolphthalein is used as an
indicator. It is colorless in acid solution and pink in a basic solution. End point is the
appearance of pale permanent pink color.

Apparatus and chemicals required:

Burette, Pipette, Conical flask, Burette stand100ml standard flask, electronic weighing
balance, beaker, funnel, Oxalic acid, NaOH solution, Phenolpthalein indicator
I- Preparation of standard solution of Oxalic acid:
In an electronic weighing balance, weigh 0.630 grams of Oxalic acid. Transfer Oxalic
acid to beaker. Add a small amount of water to beaker, shake the contents to make a clear
solution. Transfer the solution to100 ml standard flask. Add water and make the solution
up to the mark. Stopper the flask and shake it gently to get a homogenous solution.

II- Titration with NaOH solution:

Wash the burette with water and rinse it with the given solution of NaOH. Fill the burette
with NaOH solution and fix it in the burette stand. Pipette out 20ml of Oxalic acid
solution in a clean dry conical flask. Titrate it with NaOH solution. End point is the
appearance of pale permanent pink colour. Note down the burette reading and repeat the
titration to get two concordant values.

Result:
Molarity of NaOH solution=

Observation and calculation:
Weight of Oxalic acid = 0.63 grams
Molarity of Oxalic acid(M1)=Weight of Oxalic acid x1000
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Molecular weight of oxalic acid x Volume of solution (cm3)

= 0.630 x 1000 = 0.05M
