Experiment-3

Aim: To determine the strength of a given solution of sodium hydroxide solution by titrating it against

a standard solution of oxalic acid.

Materials Required: Burette, Pipette, Conical flask, Burette stand, Funnel, Stirrer

Chemicals Required: Oxalic acid, Sodium hydroxide solution, Phenolphthalein indicator

Chemicals Equation: (COOH)2 + 2NaOH → (COONa)2 + 2H2O

Procedure: Rinse the burette with the sodium hydroxide solution. Fill the burette with sodium
hydroxide solution. Remove the air gap if any, from the burette by running the solution forcefully from
the burette nozzle and note the initial reading. Pipette out 10ml of Standard oxalic acid solution is a
conical flask. Add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to it. Titrate oxalic acid with NaOH solution
until the permanent light-pink colour appears. Repeat the titration till three concordant readings are
obtained.

Observations:

1. Solution in a Burette: NaOH

2. Solution in a Pipette: Oxalic Acid
3. Indicator: Phenolphthalein
4. End point: Light pink colour

Calculation: From the above chemical equation,

2 mol of NaOH combines with 1 mol of H 2 C2 O4 .2 H 2 O

∴ 80 g NaOH =126 g H 2 C 2 O4 . 2 H 2 O
∴ 1000 ml 1 M H 2 C 2 O 4=80 g NaOH

∴ 10 ml 1 M H 2 C 2 O 4=0 . 8 g NaOH

∴ 10 ml 0 .1 M H 2 C 2 O4 =¿ NaOH

∴ 1000 ml NaOH soluti on contains=1000 g of NaO H ¿

1000 ׿
∴ Molariy of NaOH =
B . C . R × M . wt of NaOH M
