Taste of Freedom
Max Reif

Today the little bird

is let out of his cage.
He doesn't know
if his wings will still fly,
but at least he can enjoy
walking around
the garden-like world.

The bird dreams;

in his cage,
even his dreams
often have bars,

but as he strolls in the garden,

he feels like a peacock,
suns and stars and luminous eyes
blazing from his own tail.

Whether he flies or not

is almost immaterial,
for his world today
is cool and green,
and that is Heaven.

Where else
would he wish to soar?

Answer the following questions:

1. What is the meaning of the following words?

a. Luminous- emitting or reflecting usually steady
b. Blazing- of outstanding power, speed, heat, or intensity
c. Soar- fly or rise high in the air.

2. Analyze the line “The bird dreams; in his cage, even his dreams often have bars.” Relate the
line to yourself as a student.
 As a student I relate this line because this is a great poem, for me. this is just a joyous
poem of freedom of the spirit, if not the wings. It is a consideration of the everyday
freedom that we sometimes overlook, just walking about in the grass, whether we can fly
or not. And as a student I am very thankful to reminding me trogh this poem that what I
do have , and not to see the bars of what I don’t have.

3. In what ways are you similar to the bird?

 Students have recently shown that humas and birds have brains that are wired in a
similar way. Birds have been shown in previous studies to possess a range of skills such
as complex social reasoning ,an ability to propblem solve and some have even
demonstrated the capability to craft and use tools.
