Listening skills is relevant in the vital way as it is a medium of communication. Listening skills
build the understanding of vocabulary. It also promote the chance of learners successful. It is
obvious that the skill of listening helps the students to be the best with their studies .The
importance of listening in the development of the communicative and cognitive skills, it did not
start to take its place in language teaching curriculum for long years. The writer shall discuss the
significance of listening skills in language learning. Key terms to be defined is listening and
language learning.
According to Hornby (2005) states that listening is to pay attention that you can hear. In support
of Ahmadi (2011), listening skill plays a significant role in the process of communication. On
my own understanding, listening is the process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and
responding to spoken.
According to Kramma (2000), language learning is a conscious process, is the product of either
formal learning situation or a self- study program. Language is the use of a system of
communication tool through spoken words or in written form. From my own view language
learning is a system of communication which consists of a set of sounds and written symbols
Listening has an important role both in daily life and academic contexts as it is crucial for people
to sustain effective communication. It is explicit from the order itself how important the listening
skills is. According to Pourhosein Gilakjani and Ahmadi (2011), listening plays a significant role
in the process of communication. In support of, Hasan and (2000) and Hamouda (2013)
expressed that active listening provides the appropriate situations for the acquisition and
expansion of other language skills. Listening is the skill of listing which differentiates a good
learner from an average and a poor. Listening plays a pivotal roles it helps the learners to acquire
pronunciation, word stress, vocabulary and the comprehension of messages. According to Ziane
(2011), listening is imperative because it is the major process through which we get all inputs
and without possessing that skill, learning cannot occur. If has a significant effect on developing
speaking. Listening skills are also important for learning purposes since through listening
To understand the nuances in a particular language, one must be able to listen. Highly complex
concepts call for highly developed listening skills. As we get to understand spoken language by
listening it is easier to improve the other skills and gain confidence. Listening skill increase the
chance of the learner success. People who are good listeners are more likely to retain
information. Listening allow learners to understand what's being required and they will ask the
right questions. This is the valuable skill in all group projects and in learning process. Peterson
(2001) states that 'no other type of language input is easy to process as spoken language received
through listening'.
defines language acquisition as the process through which individuals develop the capacity to
perceive, produce and use words to communicate. According to Brokers and Marshal (2004),
every study conducted regarding the language skills acquisition has proved that when we
communicate, we gain 45% of language competence from listening, 30% from speaking, 15%
from reading and 10% from writing. With the highest percentage of involvement in the exchange
up and top- down processes by combining the new information and the knowledge that they
already know. According to Flowerdew and Miller (2005), advanced listening skills are the
results of combining listening process with the cognitive development. In that sense, in order to
be effective listeners, students should use both bottom-up and top - down processing in listening.
There are three parts in a usual listening lesson: pre-listening, listening and post listening. Pre-
listening part involves tasks such as activating previous knowledge of the learners and teaching
vocabulary, prepares students for the tasks that they are going to do while listening Richards
(2005). While listening part of the lesson, learners do activities such as listening for gist, and
sequencing that help them to comprehend the text. Post listening can be used for practicing the
Due to the essence of listening in language learning, it implies that educators should focus on
enhancing listening in a bit to enhance language learning among learners. To enhance the
development of listening comprehension, the teacher can use play activities such as dramatic
play. Incorporating play in the learning situation is essential since learners enjoy learning
through play. Children can role play the story and role play the solution to the problem. Dramatic
play and role play are fun activities which its contribution to development of language
particularly listening. This is because, as children engage in conversation and exchanging of
words they will be developing their listening ability.
However, listening is important in language but it has difficult. Sometimes listening challenges
can be a result of health challenges which makes teacher face difficulty in teaching listening to
such individuals. According to Hamer (2007) a child may have hearing challenges which may
need for them to be tested in case there is a medical issue. Some children, particularly those who
have lots of colds and snuffles, have intermittent hearing loss which can affect listening skills.
Listening is one of the most difficult skills for language learners because of the overemphasis on
grammar, reading and vocabulary learners who learn English as a foreign language have serious
problems in listening. Ur (2007) states that students find some features of listening
comprehension easier than others. Another important problem is students' lack of ability to use
the environmental clues to grasp the meaning. Some listeners try to catch most of the details in a
text while listening in a foreign language, they spend more effort than a native speaker does.
Conclusively, it has been observed that without possessing the skill of listening, there shall be no
chance for learning any language. Listening is the skill which is quite frequently used skill in any
language classrooms. Finally, it can be concluded that by equipping the learners in the skill of
listening, we help them to enrich their knowledge by which they can be successful learners. It is
crystal clear that listening is very important for students for it is being used as an avenue for
