Chapter 3: Safe and Ethical Use

Topic: Lesson 20-22

Technology Obsession

Technology obsession is a broad

term used to describe any
obsessive tech-related behavior –
be that gaming, online shopping,
social media, video watching or
anything else involving digital
technology.
Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)
Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) is defined
as an unhealthy behavior that interferes
with and causes stress in one's personal,
school, and/or work life. Like other
addictions, compulsive Internet usage
completely dictates a person's life.

The short-term effects of an online

addiction include unfinished tasks,
forgotten responsibilities and weight gain.
Long-term effects are seen more in the
physical symptoms such as backache, and
vision problems from staring at the screen.
Kids who are feeling lonely or vulnerable, or who have underdeveloped social
skills, may be at a higher risk for developing inappropriate relationships or
spending excessive amounts of time online.

•Routinely losing track of time while playing or socializing online.

•Sacrificing hours of sleep or neglecting other crucial activities, such as

chores and homework, to use the internet.

•Lying about time spent online, or going behind your back to overcome any
restrictions you’ve put in place

•Becoming angry, agitated or irritable if you limit their screen time or access
to their devices. Compels the parents to spend money behind it.

•Prioritizing online relationships instead of getting together with real-life

friends and family
Prevention of IAD
❑ Place the computer in a common site in
the home, like the living room.

❑ Promote social activities.

❑ Encourage interests like sports, reading,

or the cinema.

❑ Encourage daily “screen-free” times. A

maximum of 1 hour online time should
be set. Avoid screens at least one hour
before bedtime and recreational screen
use in bedrooms should be discouraged.

❑ Set study or work goals.

Technology Obsession: Games(MMO)

MMO stands for massively multiplayer

online. MMO games make up the most
popular genre of the modern era. As the
name suggests, MMO games are not
designed to be played alone. While it's
possible to play some such games offline,

MMOs encourage cooperation and

competition between players. For that
reason, many MMOs function as social
networks where gamers can chat with
other gamers from around the world.
You might be addicted to computer or video game use if:

▪ You think about being on the computer even when you're not.

▪ Hours of use are increasing, seriously disrupting family, social or work life.

▪ You lie about computer or video game use.

▪ You feel withdrawal, anger or depression when not using a computer or game.

▪ Your online fantasy life replaces your emotional life with your loved ones.

▪ You have problems such as loss of sleep or dry eyes.

▪ You neglect personal hygiene or regular meals.

ICT in Social Communication
❑ Technology has made it easy to keep in touch with
old contacts, and has also helped strengthen
relationships.

❑ We can share ideas, photos, music and video clips

and chat with friends for free. We can spread
awareness and information to a huge number of
people.

❑ Eliminates language barriers - people speaking

different languages can connect and socialize or
trade in real time using online translators

❑ Social media can enhance public space, by creating

access points to information and supporting
education.
Obsession of Social Communication
❑ People are always hooked to the social networking sites. They are more close
to online friends. Adolescents join by giving fake information and are exposed
to inappropriate organizational movements.

❑ People are more bothered about their online life rather than the real social life.

❑ We are constantly distracted by incoming messages and notifications we lose

focus on what else we may be trying to do.

❑ While social media may help to cultivate friendships, evidence suggests that
excessive use negatively impacts self-esteem and life satisfaction as people
constantly compare themselves with others socially.

❑ The current generation lacks essential interpersonal skills (the ability to

express the ideas and thoughts to others face-to-face). People addicted to the
Internet mostly suffers from isolation in real life.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF ICT IN RECREATION

❑ The overuse of computer for playing games can be harmful to health. The more
people use such devices, the less physical activities they do.

❑ As children spend more time in front of those screens, most of the time in the
couch, less time they spend outside playing, running and burning off calories.

❑ People can become addicted to playing games online or social media. For
which, they don’t spend enough time with their family and friends

❑ Endangers mental development of children, the development of imagination,

the development of language (lack of communication).
