Project Overview

The overall purpose of the project is to improve search results based on real-life search
queries. Given the presentation of the query, determine the intent of the user's search.
For this task, the actions you need to take are - (1) review the search results and
determine if the query spelling is incorrect, (2) determine if the second query is the
“correct” spelling of the first query.

Expectations

Before proceeding to the tasks, you are to do the following:

• Please read these additional examples in its entirety
• If any part is unclear, please ask for clarification before proceeding

Some common mistakes to avoid:

• Do not add to or subtract from the original intended spelling
o “harry potter” vs. “harry potter and the sorcerers stone”
o “facebook super stars” vs. “facebook”
• Make sure brand names are spelled as the actual business/brand spells it (these
can be plural – i.e.”iphone” and “iphones” are both correct)
o “samsung” vs. “sam sung”
o “googol” vs. “google”
• If any query is not in the PRIMARY language, mark as “not sure” (unless it is a
brand name)
o “男鞋”
o “botas verdes”
• If there are multiple ways that a query can be corrected to, choose the MOST
LIKELY intended spelling
o “toilet paper rolls” vs. “toilet paper tools”
o “work boots” vs. “dork boots”
• Adjectives in past or present tense that do not differ in search results are both
correct (i.e. “hinged door” and “hinge door”)
o “curve tv” and “curved tv”

Appen | Company Confidential 3

o “tint glass” and “tinted glass”
• When a search query has too many inconsistent results, do not guess, mark as
“not sure”
o “vizee”
o “rujus”
• There can be different ways of spelling a query and still be correct – do not mark a
query as incorrect if it is just another way of spelling the same thing (i.e. “waste
baskets” and “wastebaskets” are correct words in the dictionary and search results
are the same)
o “birdcages” vs. “bird cages”

“superhero” vs. “super heroes”

Additional Examples for Clarity

Query 1: cantar de mio cid

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=cantar de mio cid&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=cantar de mio cid

Correct answer: “not sure”

In this case, the primary language was supposed to be in English. Since this query is not
in the primary language, the correct response is to mark “not sure.”

Query 1: thermoator
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=thermoator&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=thermoator

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

This word is not a word in the dictionary and it is very likely the user intended to spell
something else, so it is misspelled.

Query 2: thermistor
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=thermistor&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=thermistor

Correct answer: No, incorrect

Even though “thermistor” is a word in the dictionary, but it is not the MOST LIKELY
intended spelling of the search. The most likely intended spelling is “thermometer” – so
the second query is not the correct spelling of the first query.

Appen | Company Confidential 5

Query 1: royal canin dog food gi
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=royal canin dog food gi&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=royal canin dog food gi

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

This query has an incorrectly spelled word - “gi”; “royal canin” shows up as misspelled in
the dictionary but it is a brand name, so in this case, it is correct.

Query 2: royal canin dog food golden retriever

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=royal canin dog food golden
retriever&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=royal canin dog food golden

retriever

Correct answer: No, incorrect

The most likely intended search for Query 1 is “gastrointestinal” and not “golden
retriever.” When looking through the search results, this company makes dog food that
is not specific to golden retriever, so it is not likely that the search was just for golden
retrievers. Additionally, “gastrointestinal” shows up several times in the results, so this
seems to be the most likely intended spelling for this search.

Query 1: occuwhite
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=occuwhite&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=occuwhite

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

At first glance, this may seem like it’s a brand name, but both Amazon and Google
results do not bring up such a brand, so this would be misspelled.

Appen | Company Confidential 6

Query 2: occu white dog
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=occu white dog&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=occu white dog

Correct answer: No, incorrect

Firstly, the second query added onto the original intended spelling with the word “dog”
so automatically it is already incorrect. Secondly, “occu white” with a space in between
is still not the correct spelling of this brand – the correct spelling would be “ocuvite” and
the second query is not the correct spelling of the first query.

Query 1: ki30m02ie
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ki30m02ie&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=ki30m02ie

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

After looking through the results, this is a part number and it is correctly spelled. There
are different variations of this part number but it is important that you keep part
numbers as the way they were intended to be spelled – do not add to part numbers or
subtract from them.

Query 1: ailenware
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ailenware&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=ailenware

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

This is a popular brand name of a gaming computer company and it is incorrectly
spelled.

Query 2: alienware

Appen | Company Confidential 7

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=alienware&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=alienware

Correct answer: Yes, correct

“alienware” is the right spelling of this brand name as shown in the search results for
both Amazon and Google.

Query 1: la looks conceal it

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=la looks conceal it&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=la looks conceal it

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

From the search results, there does not seem to be an actual brand called “la looks
conceal it”, there is a brand called “la girl” and another brand called “la colors”.
However, because the brands are so differently spelled, and the original query did not
have actual misspelled words in it, this would not be considered misspelled. We cannot
assume that they meant one brand or the other when the original spelling of the query
does not seem close to either of the other brand names’ spelling. It is important not to
assume or guess. If each individual word is spelled correctly and there is not a clear
MOST LIKELY spelling that is different, consider the first query as correct and not
misspelled.

Query 1: vizeee
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=vizeee&search-alias=fashion

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=vizeee

Correct answer: Not sure

This query does not seem to have a consistent search result from either Amazon or
Google. It could be a name or not, it could be a brand or not, or it could even be a

Appen | Company Confidential 8

different language. Since we are not sure what the intended spelling is, best to mark as
“not sure.”

Query 1: bathroom waste baskets

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bathroom waste
baskets&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=bathroom waste baskets

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

Since each word in this query is spelled correctly, this query would not be misspelled. If
you are unsure of a spelling, do a quick dictionary search to see if each word is correctly
spelled.

Query 1: botas mouster

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=botas mouster&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=botas mouster

Correct answer: Not sure

This query is not in the primary language and there is not a clear brand name for this in
the search results, so this would be marked as “not sure.”

Query 1: tj stevenson shooter

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=tj stevenson shooter&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=tj stevenson shooter

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

The search results show that this is a written book where the author’s name is
misspelled.

Appen | Company Confidential 9

Query 2: tj stevens once a shooter
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=tj stevens once a
shooter&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=tj stevens once a shooter

Correct answer: No, incorrect

Although the name of the author in Query 2 is spelled correctly and the full name of the
book is also spelled correctly, it is important to remember that you should not add or
subtract from the original intended spelling. Since the original spelling only had the word
“shooter” the correction should also only have the word “shooter” and not “once a
shooter”. So even though all spelling is correct, query 2 would still NOT be the correct
spelling of query 1.

Query 1: thermo flask

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=thermo flask&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=thermo flask

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

The results are showing a brand name for this query and this is not how the brand name
is spelled so it is incorrect.

Query 2: thermoflask 32 oz
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=thermoflask 32 oz&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=thermoflask 32 oz

Correct answer: No, incorrect

The correct spelling of this brand is “thermoflask” without a space in between, if this
word was not a brand name, then the space would not matter, but whenever the
intended query is for a brand name, the expectation is that the correction would be

Appen | Company Confidential 10

exactly as the business of that brand intends to spell it. Also, Query 2 added onto the
original spelling with “32 oz,” this is not acceptable since this would be assuming that
the search is for 32 oz and not 64 oz or some other variation. It is important not to add
or subtract from the original intended spelling.

Query 1: voces de hispanoamerica 5th edition

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=voces de hispanoamerica 5th
edition&search-alias=stripbooks

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=voces de hispanoamerica 5th

edition

Correct answer: Not sure

The spelling of this book is not in the primary language so the proper answer here is
“not sure.”

Query 1: buffs
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=buffs&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=buffs

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

Buffs is actually a word in the dictionary, and it is also a brand name that is spelled the
same way. Although the actual brand is Buff, plurality on brand names is acceptable, so
“buffs” is not considered misspelled.

Query 1: m-1 insecidced paint additive 1 oz

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=m-1 insecidced paint additive 1
oz&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=m-1 insecidced paint additive 1 oz

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

Appen | Company Confidential 11

The word “insecidced” is misspelled in this query.

Query 2: M-1 advanced insecticide paint additive 1 oz

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=M-1 advanced insecticide paint
additive 1 oz&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=M-1 advanced insecticide paint

additive 1 oz

Correct answer: No, incorrect

Even though each word is correctly spelled in the second query, there is adding to the
original intended spelling, so Query 2 would not be the correction of Query 1. It is
important to not add or subtract to the original intended spelling.

Query 1: journey to i
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=journey to i&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=journey to i

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

This query is spelled correctly for each word in the query. Although it may not be clear
as to what the user is intending to search for, each word is not misspelled and does not
need to be corrected.

Query 1: index cards 3x5 unrule

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=index cards 3x5 unrule&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=index cards 3x5 unrule

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

Appen | Company Confidential 12

The word “unrule” may seem to be misspelled, but a quick dictionary search does show
that it is a proper word in the dictionary. As well, it is a different version of the word
“unruled” for the index cards, which is also correct. So this query would be correct.

Query 1: monitor curve

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=monitor curve&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=monitor curve

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

Both words in query 1 is spelled correctly. For adjectives where, in this case, the word
“curve” is describing the type of monitor, both “curve” and “curved” are correct
spellings.

Query 1: funtags
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=funtags&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=funtags

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

The results are showing a brand name for this query and this is the correct spelling of
this brand name.

Query 1: wom3ns ribben cotton tank

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=wom3ns ribben cotton
tank&search-alias=fashion

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=wom3ns ribben cotton tank

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

The words “wom3ns” and “ribben” are both incorrectly spelled in this query.

Appen | Company Confidential 13

Query 2: womens ribbed cotton tank tops
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=womens ribbed cotton tank
tops&search-alias=fashion
Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=womens ribbed cotton tank tops

Correct answer: No, incorrect

Although each word in this second query is spelled correctly, the original intended
spelling did not have the word “tops” in it, so query 2 is adding to the intended spelling
of query 1 and would be incorrect. Do not add or subtract from the original intended
spelling.

Query 1: bacon scent bubbles

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bacon scent bubbles&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=bacon scent bubbles

Each word in this query is spelled correctly.

Query 1: yellow blue foldinf chair

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=yellow blue foldinf chair&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=yellow blue foldinf chair

The word “foldinf” in this query is misspelled.

Query 2: yellow blue lawn chair

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=yellow blue lawn chair&search-
alias=aps

Appen | Company Confidential 14

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=yellow blue lawn chair

Correct answer: No, incorrect

Even though each word in the second query is spelled correctly, the word “folding” in the
first query has been changed to “lawn” in the second query, so this would mean that the
second query is NOT the correct spelling of the first query. It’s important that in addition
to not adding and subtracting from the original intended spelling, to also NOT change
the intended spelling in the query.

Query 1: birdcages bird cages for parakeets

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=birdcages bird cages for
parakeets&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=birdcages bird cages for parakeets

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

Each word in this query is spelled correctly even if there are some repeats. When you
are unsure if a word is spelled correctly or not, do a quick search in the dictionary to
confirm.

Query 1: desktop rebuke controller

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=desktop rebuke
controller&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=desktop rebuke controller

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

There are many controllers out there, even though each word is correctly spelled, there
is not a controller called “rebuke” after looking through the search results, so to follow
the guidelines that the spelling should be the MOST LIKELY intended spelling, this would
be considered misspelled.

Query 2: desktop rgb controller

Appen | Company Confidential 15

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=desktop rgb controller&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=desktop rgb controller

Correct answer: Yes, correct

At first glance, “rgb” may seem to be misspelled. However, after looking through the
results, it seems that RGB is a common descriptor for controllers and other gaming
items, so “desktop rgb controller” seems to be the more LIKELY spelling for query 1.

Query 1: legos
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=legos&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=legos

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

“legos” is a brand name and is correctly spelled as plural. Plurality for brand names is
acceptable per guidelines, so this query is correct.

Query 1: rujus
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rujus&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=rujus

Correct answer: Not sure

This word does not seem to yield consistent results and it also does not seem to be a
word in the primary language. Due to the unsure nature of this query, it is best to mark
as “not sure.”

Query 1: the notorious rob kindle

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the notorious rob kindle&search-
alias=amazon-devices

Appen | Company Confidential 16

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=the notorious rob kindle

showing that it is not the MOST LIKELY intended spelling for the search, and would be
considered misspelled.

alias=amazon-devices

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=the notorious rgb kindle

Correct answer: Yes, correct

The search results are showing that this is the name of a book and each word is
correctly spelled according to this book, so query 2 is the correct spelling of query 1.

Query 1: white ling sleeve workout

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=white ling sleeve
workout&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=white ling sleeve workout

Correct answer: Yes, misspelled

When taking into the context of the full query, “ling” doesn’t seem to be the correctly
spelled descriptor for the phrase, so this would be considered misspelled.

Query 2: white long sleeve workout crop

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=white long sleeve workout
crop&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=white long sleeve workout crop

Appen | Company Confidential 17

Correct answer: No, incorrect
Even though each word in query 2 is correctly spelled and “long” is more likely than
“ling”, but there is an added word “crop” in the second query. Guidelines are to not add
or subtract from the original intended spelling, so query 2 would not be the correct
spelling of query 1.

Query 1: mx807
Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mx807&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=mx807

Correct answer: No, not misspelled

Results show that this is a model number to an actual item so it is spelled correctly.

Query 1: 06 altima multi color led halos

halos&search-alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=06 altima multi color led halos

Each word in this query is spelled correctly, including “altima” which is a name brand, so
this query would be correct.

Query 1: yarow dust cover

mazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=yarow dust cover&search-
alias=aps

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=yarow dust cover

Amazon search results: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=yarwo toaster cover&search-
alias=aps

Correct answer: No, incorrect

The brand name “yarwo” is correctly spelled in query 2, however, the original intended
spelling of “dust cover” has been changed to “toaster cover”. It is important not to add,
subtract, or change the original intended spelling, so query 2 would NOT be the correct
spelling of query 1.

Query 1: jaiqi

Google search results: https://google.com/search?q=jaiqi
