Thanks for downloading my product research cheat sheet! Below you will discover
strategies that I use every day to find profitable Amazon products. I currently sell 45
products on Amazon.com and own 4 accounts that make me over $2,000,000 per
year in revenue.
All the links and resources mentioned in this cheat sheet can be found at the end, in
the resource section. You will also have software discount codes. Enjoy!
Most of you are already familiar with using merchant words for finding the best
product keywords. However, with this method we reverse engineer the platform. This
method is best used for finding general product ideas, not specific products.
1. Search random root words on Merchantwords and then scroll down the list of
related keywords until you find something that piques your interest. For
example, you search "baby" and scroll down the list and find "baby monitor"
2. Now you search “baby monitor” on amazon and do some digging. Eventually,
you'll probably uncover the "baby heartbeat monitor"
3. Simply repeat with a different root word if you couldn’t find anything under
baby.
This method is purely trial and error. You can just keep repeating the process until
you strike gold.
Pros of this method: It is very simple and you can see hundreds of products in a few
minutes. Also, being able to see the search volume for the product keyword gives you
an idea of the demand before you even look at the product on Amazon.
Cons of this method: It is all based on trial and error, and coming up with good root
words can get difficult. You also need an account for merchant words to use this
method ($40), but if you are serious about FBA you will want to get a merchant words
account anyways.
3. Amazon TOP ASIN List
This is a list that Amazon put out with the top 10,000 selling ASIN's in each category,
based on sales velocity. You can also filter by USA, Canada, and Mexico. This little list
has been a gold mine for me.
Pros of this method: The list is made by Amazon itself so the data is 100% accurate.
The fact that you can bring this into excel or sheets and filter through everything as
you see fit makes it a very easy and fast method for pinpointing products within a
specific criteria. The list is also updated every month so you're not looking at
outdated numbers.
Cons of this method: A lot of the top ASINs are from big brand names, with no way
to filter them out.
Since these are already the best sellers, you know there is high demand. (Note - the
New Release list isn't just the newest listed items, it is technically a best seller list as
well. It shows the hottest new and upcoming products)
2. Now you just need to find the ones with low competition. To do this, simply
scroll through the list and look for products with low reviews (under 100).
3. Repeat. If you don’t find any good products, just try a new category!
The new release performs the best for me since competition is typically lower on
brand new products.
Pros of this method: This list is updated constantly, so you can make this part of your
daily product research routine. Just like the top ASIN list, you already know there is a
high demand for these items. Amazon also makes it very easy to jump from category
to category, and even lets you filter through sub-categories.
Cons of this method: Unlike the top ASIN list, you cannot download these lists to
import them into excel. That means no custom filtering. There are also way more
people looking here than on the top ASIN list, so if you find a product here there's a
good chance that other people are looking at that same product, at the same time.
5. Famebit.com
There are requirements to use this site
This is by far my absolute FAVORITE
METHOD. Famebit.com is a site that
connects brands and influencers
(YouTube, Instagram, Facebook etc.).
Brands post their products on the site
and receive bids from influencers to
advertise their products.
Pros of this method: The fact that there is a minimum requirement is the biggest pro.
Since the website is limited, there aren't many people using this method. That means
you have very little competition working against you. This is also the most “secret”
method in the cheat sheet because not many big FBA influencers have talked about
this.
Cons of this method: Since its limited and very niche, the variety of products doesn’t
change very often. This is best used every week or two, as opposed to daily.
6. YouTube Research
This is the most fun method because you get to watch entertaining YouTube videos
while you do your research! There are thousands of people that upload videos to
YouTube every day to showcase "weird products online" or "funny amazon products"...
what most of these YouTubers don't know, is that some of the products they laugh at
are actually gold mines for FBA sellers!
If you watch the entire first page of videos for those filters, there's a good chance you
will find a good product. If you don’t, just try again next week.
Pros of this method: These YouTube creators - especially the big ones - are working
around the clock to find the most obscure, eye catching, or funny products to bring to
their viewers. They are literally doing your work for you, and then kindly presenting it
to you. Most of the time you won’t even need to watch the video because the video
creator will leave all the links in the description.
Cons of this method: A lot of these videos will have overlapping products, so it can
get tedious after a while.
7. Amazon Suggested Search
This method is almost identical to the merchant words method mentioned above.
However instead of using merchant words, you use amazon itself.
That is the basic form of the method. However, you will run out of ideas fast, because
Amazon will only give you a handful of suggestion per word. So what I like to do is
either:
A. Add another letter after the first word. Ex. “Baby A”. Then amazon will
give new suggestion like “Baby Alive Doll” or “Baby Activity Centre”.
B. Don’t put in a full word. Only enter 1-2 letters. Ex. “Te”. Now you will
get suggestions all over the board like “Tens unit”, “Teething toys”, or
“Tea tree oil”.
All you need to do is systematically go through all the letter combinations possible,
and you are sure to find a few good products.
Pros of this method: The suggested terms are there because Amazon has marked
them as popular terms, or frequently searched. So even though you can’t see the
actual search volume like you can with merchant words, you don’t really need to. Also
the fact that you only need to search for single or double letters is a big plus. It leaves
way more options for you to comb through.
Cons of this method: It can get tedious and even confusing if you don’t have a
system in place to go through all the letter combos without overlapping. There will
also be more people using this method than there will be using the merchant words
one since this one is free.
8. Viral Launch Product Discovery
Now it's time to get into product research tools. The above strategies are great
creative ways to find products, but what if we just wanted a software to do all the
heavy lifting for us?
A. Product Search
Product Search is probably the easiest to understand. This is where you set filters
such as min price, max price, max reviews, etc. Then Product Discovery will show you
Amazon products that meet your filters.
However as you can see above, they give a lot of advanced filters that really help
narrow down your search. Things such as;
Initial investment cost - Set your budget and have Viral Launch show you
products that you can afford to get into, and succeed with.
Sales Pattern - Filter through Up & Coming, Seasonal, and Declining products
The idea of this search option is to find markets that you typically wouldn't think to
look for. However you must note that you will still see big brand products, and
trademarked or patented products.
B. Keyword Search
Keyword search will not show exact products, it will instead show you keywords that
Amazon customers are searching to buy certain products. For example, the product
may be a “Yellow Rubber Duck Bath Toy”, but in keyword search you will see “Baby
Bath Toys”. That means people are searching “Baby Bath Toys”, and not for “Yellow
Rubber Duck”, even though the rubber duck is getting sales. This information can now
be used to find similar products in that area.
C. Brand Search
Brand search is great for spying on the top guys to figure out what they are doing
right. Using these filters you can find the top brands within a specific niche and
discover what they are doing to drive their results. You can see what products they
have, their sales trend, sales distribution, and even their monthly profit.
This will particularly help new sellers that already know what type of niche they want
to get into. Or someone that's already selling and wants to get a leg up on their
competitors.
D. Category Search
There are 36,000 sub-categories on Amazon.com, and new ones are constantly added.
This search lets you easily filter through these categories to find pockets of
opportunity.
You can use presets to make everything easy. These presets let you filter by Quick
wins, New & Opportunistic, Gaining Popularity, or Quick Review Earners.
Once you find a category you like, you can view the full analysis to see the hottest
products in that category.
Summary & Resources
That concludes the product research cheat sheet, I hope you don't take these
methods lightly. Study them, master them, and implement them every day. Each one
of these methods has found me products that I still sell on Amazon to this day. Each
has its pros and cons, but at the end of the day, they all work… if you do!
