INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE TIME MOTION STUDY CALCULATOR:
** ALL FIELDS ON THE CALCULATOR ARE REQUIRED TO BE COMPLETED**
1. In section 1, fill out the administrative details about the time and motion study, including:
a. Date of the Study: Enter the date that the time motion study was conducted or calculated if timings were conducted over a
study is re-conducted at any time, ensure to update the date and file the completed TMS documents together for reference.
b. Product Name or Code: Enter in the unique name and/or code of the product you are timing. It is important that a unique p
that the TMS can be distinguished from others in the future. Using a generic name such as “Round Basket” is not sufficient.
c. Production Process: While some products are made with one production process (such as assembling a finished bracelet, wh
product from start to finish), some products have multiple production processes (such as weaving, which requires one person
make bobbins, and one person to weave the fabric, and one person to sew the fabric into a pillow). If there are multiple produ
and it is possible that more than one person may participate in the production of that product earning a different piece rate w

d. Unit of Measure: Enter the unit of measure that you are using to time production. For example, this may be “1 basket” if yo
one full basket, or it may be “2 handles” if you are only timing the production of a set of handles for a basket, but not the body

e. Brand: Enter in the name of the brand that is ordering the product. If there is no brand sourcing the product – for example i
directly to consumer or will be marketed as a sample product – enter ‘NA’ in this field.
f. Production Location(s): Enter the name of the geographic location(s) where the product is being made.
g. Minimum Wage Region: Most countries have different minimum wages based on the region or area where a worker is base
of the local minimum wage region that the production is based in. This information may be found by referring to your local lab
in determining the region, please contact Nest for support. If your product is being produced in multiple minimum wage regio
wage rates, separate TMS documentation must be kept for each one reflecting the different minimum piece rate wages, thoug
remain the same.
h. Current Local Monthly Minimum Wage Rate: Enter the current minimum wage rate at the time that the time motion study i
the local minimum wage rate is adjusted, the piece rate will need to be adjusted accordingly to ensure that it continues to me
TMS documentation must be kept with the original TMS document for reference.
i. Product Photo: Insert a photo of the product or the portion of the product that the time motion study is related to.
2. In section 2, fill in the information about the participants of the survey, including:
a. Worker Name, Location and Subcontractor: For each study, a minimum of 5 workers must be timed. Enter the name of each
location, and the name of their subcontractor. This information will be used to verify these participants in the future. While yo
worker for one timing, this must be noted and the rest of the participants must be chosen from the actual small workshop or h
to ensure accurate representation.
b. Time per Piece: Using a digital stopwatch, measure the length of time that each worker takes to complete his/her product, i
them to prepare that product (ex. threading a needle or preparing any raw materials). As each worker completes their produc
that it took to complete one unit. If the product is completed in less than one hour, then list the hours and seconds as a decim
seconds would be written as 5.5). If the product takes over an hour to make, enter in the total minutes, converting any hours i
hours would be written as 150 minutes).
c. Worker Skill Level: Workers who are chosen to participate in the study must represent a range of skill levels so that the aver
field, enter in the general skill level of each worker – low, average, or high. Often this information is best decided by a subcont
directly with that worker.
3. In section 3, calculate the collective TOTAL TIME that the product took to make by all workers combined. This number is cal
all numbers in the TIME PER PIECE column. This field will auto-calculate if using the digital version of the tool.
4. In section 4, notate the total NUMBER OF WORKERS that participated in the time and motion study for this particular produ

6. In section 6, calculate the AVERAGE TIME PER PIECE (IN HOURS) by dividing the AVERAGE TIME PER PIECE (IN MINUTES) by

7. In section 7, record the LOCAL MINIMUM WAGE RATE PER HOUR. If you do not have the hourly minimum wage rate, you ca
minimum wage rate by 8 OR dividing a monthly minimum wage rate by 208 if 6 day work week or by 176 if 5 day work week. E
rate is up to date.
8. In section 8, calculate the MINIMUM PIECE RATE WAGE PER PIECE by multiplying the AMOUNT OF TIME PER PIECE (IN HOU
PER HOUR. This field will auto-calculate if using the digital version of the tool.
9. In section 9, enter in the current piece rate wage that is being paid to end workers for this product or portion of the produc
actual net wage that end workers receive and does not include any additional costs such as subcontractor fees or raw materia
obtain this information from subcontractors to ensure an accurate calculation.
