CHECKLIST FOR MAKING AN UNOCCUPIED BED

PROCEDURE SCORE REMARKS

1. Introduce self and verify the client’s identity. Explain to the client what
you are going to do, why it is necessary, and how he or she can participate.
2. Assist the patient out of bed

3. Perform hand hygiene

4. Place the fresh linen on the client's chair or over bed table; do not use
another client's bed.

5 Raise the bed to a height appropriate for health personnel. Lock the wheels

6. Loosen all bedding systematically, starting at the head of the bed on the far
side and moving around the bed up to the head of the bed on the near side.

7. Remove the pillowcase,(may use as hamper) and place the pillow on

the chair.

8 Roll each soiled linen, hold it away from your uniform, and place it directly in
the hamper, not on the floor. Remove the gloves

9 Place the folded bottom sheet with its center fold on the center of the bed.
Make sure the sheet is hem side down for a smooth foundation.

10 Miter the sheet at the top corner on the near side and tuck the sheet under
the mattress, working from the head of the bed to the foot.

11 Lay the rubber sheet, over the bottom sheet. Make sure the top and bottom
edges extend from the middle of the client's back to the area of the mid
thigh or knee.

12 Lay the drawsheet over the rubber sheet in the same manner.

13 Tuck in the bottom sheet under the head of the mattress,pull the sheet
firmly, and miter the corner of the sheet.
 14 Unfold the top sheet, hemside up,its centrefold is at the center of the bed
and the top edge is even with the top edge of the mattress.

15 Tuck in the sheet at the foot of the bed, and miter the corner.Leave the

sides of the top sheet hanging freely

16 Move to the other side of the bed , tuck at the foot part, and miter the
corner

17 Put clean pillowcases on the pillows.

18 Put on another linen if there is no patient ( CLOSE BED )

19 Document all relevant information.
