APPLYING A SPIRAL BANDAGE
1. Gather necessary roller bandages.
2. Explain the procedure to the client.
3. Properly position the affected part before applying the bandage.
4. Anchor the bandage with two circular turns at the distal end of the extremity.
5. After anchoring the bandage, begin the first spiral turn then straight around the
extremity towards the back and then make the turn downward.
6. Overlap the bandages by two-thirds the width of the bandage.
7. Terminate the bandage with two circular turns.
8. Secure the end of the bandage with tape or clips if there is no Velcro fastener.
9. Assess the client for proper circulation, fit of the bandage and comfort.
10. The bandage is firm, and not too tight.

APPLYING A FIGURE OF EIGHT BANDAGE
1. Gather necessary roller bandages.
2. Explain the procedure to the client.
3. Anchor the bandage around the distal end of the extremity using two circular turns.
4. Make a circular turn around the foot and around the ankle.
5. Make a spiral turn around the ankle and foot.
6. Continue to make the alternate turns around the ankle and foot.
7. Overlap the previous turn by two-thirds the width of the bandage.
8. Terminate the bandage above the joint with two circular turns, and then secure the end
appropriately.
9. Assess the client for adequate circulation, fit of bandage, and comfort.
10. Proper aftercare of equipment used.

APPLYING CIRCULAR BANDAGE
1. Gather necessary roller bandages.
2. Explain the procedure to the client.
3. Hold the bandage in your dominant hand, keeping the roll uppermost, and unroll the
bandage about 8 cm (3 in.).
4. Apply the end of the bandage to the part of the body to be bandaged and hold the end
down with the thumb of the other hand.
5. Encircle the body part as often as needed, making sure that each layer overlaps one-
half to two-thirds of the previous layer.
6. The bandage is firm and not too tight and the end is secured with tapes or clips if there
is no Velcro fastener.
7. Assess the client for circulation on the affected extremity, fit of bandage, and comfort
8. Do aftercare of equipment used.

APPLYING AN ARM SLING
1. Prepare the necessary materials to be used.
2. Explain the procedure to the client.
3. Place one end of the unfolded triangular sling over the shoulder of the uninjured side so
that the binder falls down the front of the chest of the client with the point of the triangle
(apex) under the elbow of the injured side.
4. Take the upper corner, and carry it around the neck until it hangs over the shoulder on
the injured side.
5. Bring the lower corner of the binder up over the arm to the shoulder of the injured side.
6. Fold the sling neatly at the elbow, and secure it with safety pins or tape.
7. Make sure the wrist is supported, to maintain alignment.
8. Remove the sling periodically to inspect the skin for indication of irritation, especially
around the site of the knot.
10. Check the tying of the sling, position, neatness, and client’s comfort.
11. Monitor for adequate circulation.
