UNIT 3: TECHNOPRENEURSHIP ECOSYSTEM

OVERVIEW
Startups and Technopreneurs are buzz words these days and many governments
are putting resources in place to encourage their young generations into this new Startup
ecosystem. Let me explain a few components which can help have a better understanding
of the startup ecosystem: Technopreneurs are entrepreneurs who use “technology” as a
driving factor in transforming resources into goods and services. They make use of
technology to come out with new or innovative products through a process of
commercialization.

3.1.1 Human Resources Components

Someone who considers important subjects or

Helps to frame ideas, problems, or opportunities in relation to different
scenarios.
✓ INNOVATOR
A person who introduces new methods, ideas, or products.

Someone or something that puts a decision, plan, agreement, etc.

The people who create the stuff that a business requires to run.

educational institutions, or government agencies that provide an
environment for startups to develop by providing services such as
management training and office space.

The process by which a company works to obtain new knowledge that it
might use to create new technology, products, services, or system that it
will either use or sell.

• Internet Access, communication, and other services

Is the ability of individuals and organizations to connect to the Internet using


computer terminals, computers, and other devices; and to
access services such as email and the World Wide Web.

• Geographic Accessibility

The ability to reach a place with respect to another place.

• Laws and Policies


✓ INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
Are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds? They
usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of his/her creation
for a certain period.

✓ PATENT
A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or
a process that provides, in general, a new way of doing something, or offers
a new technical solution to a problem. To get a patent, technical information
about the invention must be disclosed to the public in a patent application.

✓ COPYRIGHT
This includes literary and artistic works such as novels, poems, and plays,
films, musical works, artistic works such as drawings, paintings,
photographs and sculptures, and architectural designs.

✓ FRANCHISING
Is when a person or company (the franchisee) pays another person
or company (the franchisor) a set of fees and royalties for the right to
do business using their trademarks, products, services, and
even business model and operating systems.

✓ TRADEMARK
Is a type of intellectual property consisting of a recognizable sign, design,
or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source
from those of others, although trademarks used to identify services are
usually called service marks.

(the licensor) allows another party (the licensee) to use, modify, and/or
resell that property in exchange for compensation (consideration).

A business sector meaning pertains to the distinction made between
businesses. These distinctions are made according to industry or sector.
There are multiple ways to classify businesses by sector. Some economists
like to divide businesses according to corporate, nonprofit, and government
organizations.

More often, the economy is divided into three sectors: the primary,
secondary, and tertiary sectors. The only problem with this classification
system is that it precludes the fourth sector, including government agencies
and agencies that are government-controlled.

✓ FUNDING AGENCIES
Individual or organization that provides the mechanism in which financial
assets are accumulated for the purpose of paying accrued pension benefits.

• Financial Services
✓ FINANCIAL SERVICES
Financial Services is also the term used to describe organizations that deal
with the management of money.
Ex. Banks, investment banks, insurance companies, credit card companies
and stock brokerages.

3.1.4 THREE VITAL COMPONENTS FOR BUSINESS

• EXCELLENT MARKET OPPORTUNITY


✓ This means you should know who your customer and the right timing and correct
planning are in opening a business

• SUPERB ENTREPRENEUR
✓ With the right opportunity, the business will be successful if led by a person with
strong entrepreneurial and management skills

• RESOURCES
✓ This means that the entrepreneur should be frugal it means low overhead, high
productivity, and minimal ownership of capital assets.

3.1.5 9 F’s Common Components of Business

1. FOUNDER
Every start-up business must have an excellent, determined, and knowledgeable
entrepreneur.

2. FOCUSED
Businesses must have a focused market need, a specialized one. Perhaps, a niche
market would be better for start-ups. A successful business lies upon focused market
needs.

3. FAST
The rate of change in business is rapid. Product life cycles are getting shorter.
Technological innovation progresses at a relentless pace. Government rules and
regulations keep changing. Communications and travel around the globe keep getting
easier and cheaper. And consumers are better informed about their choices. To survive,
let alone succeed, you must be quick and nimble.

4. FLEXIBLE
You must be ready for rapid changes – personnel factors, environmental factors,
and social factors. Alternative plans and strategies are good preparation for such. Be
flexible and stay successful.

5. FOREVER INNOVATORS
Small businesses are great innovators. Whether you hope to build a big company
or a small one, the message is the same: Strive tirelessly to keep productivity high.

6. FLAT
You must have as few layers of management as possible. Start your way in and
learn things slowly.

7. FRUGAL
Maintain your overheads low, productivity high, and ownership of capital assets to
a minimum only spend with useful and utilize them well.

8. FRIENDLY
But, whatever you do, you probably won’t be able to attain much success unless
you have happy customers, happy employees, and happy suppliers. The secret is
you have a friendly business. This means, that everyone in your company must be
friendly, especially those that deal with your customers and your suppliers as well
must be happy to serve you.

9. FUN
Stress always comes in. Having fun is one of the keys to keeping your business
stride high. You would not have put in 12-hour days and even sometimes
overnights to catch up with the relentless pace of entrepreneurial changes without
your own dreams and passion.
