GRADE 12 LEARNING AREA : LIFE SCIENCES THEME UNIT 1 TOPIC : ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES : POPULATION ECOLOGY : ESTIMATING POPULATION SIZE

(i) (ii) Mark and recapture Quadrant method

Background information . Learners are tasked to estimate population size of weeds in , say , soccer fields(Quadrant method (used). And estimating population size of goat in a kraal(Mark and recapture method) Learning theories

2 The following three learning theories are applied .

(a) Behaviourism Learners can be observed e.g. When they determine sample and population of soccer field. Outcome of the lesson At the end of the presentation learners should be able to determine population size using (i) Mark and recapture method (ii) Quadrant method For expanded opportunities , learners can be given homework that deal with high order questions based on similar activity . (b) Cognitive. This learning theory involves memory , thinking , reflection . Learners will be required to remember the formula of an area . L x B

( c ) Constructivism According to this theory learning experience should be active , not passive .Every learner should be actively involved in the learning process . In this case every learner should be involved in each step of estimating population size using quadrant method.

3 Analysis Phase
a) Learning about learners Educator should about his learners . Amongst the others he should know how many learners are in his class, level of their knowledge , prior knowledge etc. Half the group can determine sample size and the other half determine population size using meter sticks . b) Learning about the curriculum and content requirements . According to curriculum requirement , this activity requires the learner to be able to determine population size by using all the steps involved in determining population size by quadrant method . Example Application of the formula 1 Population size = Number of organisms in a sample x population size/sample area In this activity learn to solve problems ( Calculation) LEARNING OUTCOMES Learning outcome 1 sample of population. learners conduct an investigation by collecting data e.g. size of

Learning outcome 2 the learners show understanding of how life sciences knowledge is applied in everyday life e.g. the term population refers to a group of organisms occupying the same habitat. CRITICAL OUTCOMES CO 2 Learners work effectively with others and members of a team, group or organisation. CO 3 Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information. Development outcomes

Reflecting on and exploring of a variety of strategies to learn more effectively. After all of the above have been done, the design phase can be initiated.

4 DESIGN PHASE
ANALYSE THE OUTCOMES S.K.A.B Skill- learners will collect data Knowledge learners know how to determine the area ( L x B) learners believe that population size fluctuates/changes.

Attitude and belief

DEVELOPING INITIAL CONTENT IDEAS Brainstorming estimating ? by brainstorming many are eliminated. Which population size are we

Eliminating of some of initial idea The following factors can be used to eliminate some of the ideas Amount of time needed to learn content Relationship of ideas of subject matter.

PRELIMANARY PROGRAMME DESCLIPINE Identifying type of learning This activity requires learners to solve problems and collaborate with others. Choosing mythology Here we look at scientific mythology that could be used to create learning experience e.g. answering questions based on the learning area (e.g. answering multiple choice questions).

The development phase

The development phase requires that the website be produced refined and validated. This can be done by the HTML or by online design tools e.g. Yola and image editing by Adobe or Gimp. Page template can be used. Template might include emblems. In development phase the following can be done. Development of management plans e.g. Time and Budget.

The creation of graphs, sound and videos. Authoring of screen page. Assembling of the screen pieces web pages in sequence. Preparations of support material e.g. Edition exercised and contact details for the developers.

Implementation and evaluation

Lastly, the project (web ) need to be evaluated. Each project .Each project need to be evaluated. Since it cannot be perfect .Each project need to be improved, since it canot be perfect . Improving the project can be done by pilot offering . The group of pilot should be big enough to increase reliability and meaningful. The following template( questionnaire ) can be used to evaluate the software.

QUESTIONNAIRE

After pilot offering is done , it is advisable to revisit web site.
