1. Descriptive Text 2 (Persons & Animals)
1.1 Definition
a meaningful text that describes what people and animals look like
1.2 Social Function
 To give information about a particular entity by describing its features, history, and
special characteristics.
 To give information about things by describing physical attributes, behaviors, uses,
etc.
1.3 Generic Structure
The generic structure of this text consists of :
 Identification or general statements. It introduces or identifies specific object (a person
and animal).
 Descriptions: The parts of a text describe the object characteristics, appeareances,

 Focus on specific participants as the main character;
 Use of present tense as dominant tenses;
 Use of linking verbs or relational process frequently (is, are, has, have, belongs to) in
order to classify and describe appearance or qualities and parts or functions of
phenomena;
 Use of action verbs or material process and behavioral process in giving additional
description regarding action and behavior done by the participants in text;
 Use of mental verb or mental process when describing feelings;
 Use of nominal group frequently to describe;
 Use of adjective and adverbs to add information to nouns and add information to verbs to
provide more detailed description about the topic;
 Use of adverbial phrases to add more information about manner, place, or time and
sometimes realized in embedded clause which functions as circumstances

2. Descriptive Text 2 (Things & Places)


2.1 Definition
The descriptive texts (things and places) is a meaningful text that describes and reveals
particular thing or place.
2.2 Social Function
 To give information about a particular entity by describing its features, history, and
special characteristics.
 To give information about things by describing physical attributes, behaviors, uses, etc.
2.3 Generic Structures
 Identification : Identifies phenomenon to be described
 Description : Describes parts, qualities, or characteristics
2.4 Language Features:
 Specific participant: it has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one) e.g:
Serang beach, my cottage, Penataran temple.
 The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, e.g: a beautiful beach, the
famous place in Jepara, etc.
 The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it
tells the fact of the object described.
 Action verb: verbs that show an activity (i.e, run, sleep, walk, cut etc….
 Use of passive voice
 Use of noun phrase
 Use of technical terms
 Use of general and abstract noun.
 Use of conjunction of time and cause-effect

3. Report text : Classifying and Compositional Reports


3.1 Definition
Report text is a text which presents information about something, as it is. It is as a result of
systematic observation and analyses.
3.2 Social Function
Classifying report :
To organize and describe a field or topic into a class and subclass hierarchy
Compositional report :
To organise and describe a field or topic according to its part (a part or whole part)
3. 3 Generic Structures:
 General Classification ; Stating classification of general aspect of thing; animal, public
place, plant, etc which will be discussed in general
 Description : tells what the phenomenon under discussion ; in terms of parts, qualities,
habits or behaviors.
3.4 Language Features:
a. Use of general nouns, e.g hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, e.g our dog;
b. Use of relating verbs to describe features, e.g Molecules are tiny particles;
c. Some use of action verbs when describing behavior, eg Penguin cannot fly;
d. Use of present tense e.g Tropical cyclones always begin over the sea;
e. Use of technical terms, e.g Isobars are lines drawn on a weather map;
f. Use of paragraphs with topic sentences to organize bundles of information; repeated
naming of the topic as the beginning focus of the clause.

4. Report Text 2 : Comparative Report and Historical Report


4.1 Definition
Report Text is a text which presents information about something, as it is.
4.2 Social Function
a. Comparative Report : To identify the similarities and differences between two or
more classes or things
b. Historical Report : To give information about the way things were in a relation to
aparticular historical period or site.
4.3 Generic Structure
a. Comparative Report :
 General Statement which introduces entities to be compared
 Description which contains the systematic analysis of similarities and
differences
b. Historical Report :
 General Statement : it identifies historical period or site and it defines and locates
in time and place
 Description : Features of Characteristics, activities, Behaviors, Artefacts,
Historical significance
4.4 Language Fatures
 Use of general noun
 Use of relating verbs
 Use of Present tense except historical report
 Use of attitudinal vocabulary to emphasis on facts

3. Identifying report text and descriptive text is little bit difficult. Some text we recognized as a
descriptive text turns out to be a report text.
4. It is quite difficult when it comes to identifying the relating verbs and vocabularies that emphasis
on facts.

6. Classifying and Compositional Reports. There are misconception in Generic structure


7. The use of past tense in Historical Report was not from the start. Sometimes Historical report use
present tense.
8. Classifying text sometimes similar to descriptive text such as the text entitled Types of whale –
whale species in antartica
9. From my point of view, report text is general (formal?) form of descriptive text.
