What is a 3D Printer?
• A new generation machine that can make everyday things.
• it can produce different kinds of objects, in different materials, all from
the same machine.
• They replace traditional factory production lines with a single

INTRODUCTION What is 3D Printing?
TO 3D PRINTING
3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three
dimensional solid objects from a digital file.
The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes.
In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive
layers of material until the object is created. Each of these layers can be
seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.

Powder-based 3D Printing/ Laser Sintering/ How it works ?
How it works

• we need a 3D model and a slicer program

• the powder is heated below the melting point
• spreads out a fine layer of this powder
• a laser beam melts the areas that need to be sintered

3D PRINTING • models are printed layer by layer

TECHNIQUES
Resin-based 3D Printing/ Stereolithography (SLA)
How it works

– We need a 3D model and a slicer program

– Resin is held in a resin tank
– The build platform lowers into the tank
– a UV laser projects a design onto the resin, curing it.
– As the liquid resin hardens, it creates the layers of the object.
3D PRINTING – This process is repeated and the build platform continues to raise until all
TECHNIQUES the layers of the object are complete.
Resin-based 3D Printing/ PolyJet Technology

How it works?
• A PolyJet 3D printer works like an inkjet printer.
• Instead of jetting drops of ink, the printer jets drops of photopolymer that
solidify when exposed to UV light.
• These layers accumulate on the build tray until the part is complete.
3D PRINTING • PolyJet materials properties vary, ranging from rigid to rubber-like
TECHNIQUES
Filament-based 3D Printing

• a long plastic filament is fed by a spool to a nozzle where the material is

liquefied and ‗drawn‘ on the platform
• the melted plastic immediately hardens again.
• the nozzle moves to place the material in the correct location to build your
model up layer by layer.
• When a layer is drawn, the platform lowers by one layer thickness so the
3D PRINTING printer can start with the next layer.

3D Printer Safety Precaution

• MECHANICAL
Do not place limbs inside the build area while the nozzle is in motion.
The printer nozzle moves in order to create the object.
• HIGH TEMPERATURE
3D Printer Do not touch the printer nozzle – it is heated to a high temperature in order to melt the

Safety build material

• FUMES & PARTICULETES
Precaution 3-D Printing works by melting synthetic materials, this process can produce odours
which can be irritating to some individuals.
Ultrafine particulate can be a by-product of 3-D printing; proper ventilation is needed
and printers should never be located close to workers.

SLICING
What is a Slicer?
 A slicer is 3D printing software that converts digital 3D models into printing
instructions for your 3D printer to create an object.
 The slicer cuts your CAD model into horizontal layers based on the settings you
choose (three-dimensional model into two-dimensional layers), and calculates
how much material your printer will need to be extrude and how long it will take
to do it.
 All of this information is then bundled up into a GCode file which is sent to your
printer.
SLICING  Slicer settings do impact the quality of your print so it‘s important to have the
right settings to get you the best quality print possible.

SLICING
What is a Slicer? (Cont)
A slicer program allows to calibrate printer settings for various types of "areas to
print", like:

– extrusion speed (rotations / minute)

– head speed
– temperature
– Fan on/off

SLICING Furthermore, the program allows to define:

– wall thickness
– fill patterns/ percentage of infill
– extrusion speed, head speed and temperature per type of area
– support etc
Deposited filament for a layer or a section of a layer depends on extrusion
speed, head movement speed, and temperature. In addition, factors like
movement patterns, plastic brand, fan on/off etc. also have an influence on the
design.
Slicer Setting

SLICING
Slicer Setting - Layer Height
• layer height = resolution of your print.
• specifies the height of each filament layer in your print.
• thinner layers will create more detailed prints with a smoother
surface.
• thinner layers /more time to print (since there will be more layers
that make up your object)
SLICING • thicker layer will get you a faster print but it will be a rougher surface
(individual layers will be more visible).
Slicer Setting - Layer Height

SLICING
Slicer Setting – Strength, Speed, Cost, Quality

SLICING
Slicer Setting - Shell Thickness
• Shells refers to the number of times
the outer walls of the design are
traced by the 3D printer before starting
the hollow inner sections of your
design.
• This defines the thickness of the side
walls and is one of the biggest factors
in the strength of your print.
• Increasing this number will create
thicker walls and improve the strength
SLICING of the print.
• If you print something that will need
more durability, or if you‘re creating a
water-tight print like a vase, you may
want to increase shell thickness.
• Any increase in the number of shells
also increase the amount of time and
material required to print the model
increasing overall part cost.
• Shells typically consist of a specified
number of nozzle diameters. It is
always good to design shells to be a
multiple of nozzle diameter to prevent
voids from being formed.
Slicer Setting - Retraction
• Retraction is used in 3D printing to
stop the flow of melted filament when
the nozzle must be moved between
islands, and a string or ooze is not
wanted.
• Retraction also has the benefit of
preserving the nozzle pressure -
when the un-retract happens the
pressure is restored to near the
SLICING previous level. If a part has many
frequent non-printing moves - then
pressure is lost if retraction is not
used.

Retraction Distance
Direct drive: 0.5-2.0mm
Bowden extruders: ~15mm

Retraction Distance
Direct drive: 0.5-2.0mm
Bowden extruders: ~15mm
Slicer Setting - Infill
• Like most wooden doors are not solid but have a low density core. In 3D Printing
Infill is a value usually represented in percentage that shows how much a solid
model should be filled in with material when printed. Reasonable values range
between 10% and 30%.

• Higher infill % = Higher strength/ Weight/ Cost/ Print Time

SLICING • Lower infill % = Lower in strength/ Weight/ Cost/ Print Time

Slicer Setting - Bottom / Top Thickness
This parameter corresponds to the thickness of the outside shell but for the
bottom and top surfaces of the object you are printing. They are very important
for a high quality print. The higher the value the better the quality, but also the
slower the process and the more material is used.
The top and bottom thickness needs to be an exact multiple of your layer
height.
The bottom thickness is also used for bridges and steep overhang, so then it's
SLICING
more important then you would imagine.
Slicer Setting - Print Speed
• The speed of printing moves.
• The other parameter that influences a lot print quality.
• If you print fast, the mechanical inertia of the machine start to produce defects on the
print.
• If you print slowly is more easy for the machine to follow the lines and to make good
cornering, but also more easy to push filament to the extruder, and to cool down the
material.
• A good range is between 30mm/s up to 120mm/s, with the most used value between
SLICING 50mm/s and 90mm/s.
Slicer Setting - Supports & Overhangs
Overhang is when a part of the design, when it prints, will not have anything between it
and the build platform. To compensate for this, the 3D printer can build a lattice of support
material up to the overhanging part. After the print, the support material will have to be
removed. But since for most FFF 3D printers the support material is made of the same
material as the object, it can rarely be removed without a trace that is sometimes difficult
to clean up completely and can leave a mess on more complex prints: Because of the
SLICING troubles with supports, it's a good idea to design for supportless 3D printing.
Slicer Setting - Supports & Overhangs
One way of fixing the dangling object problem is to configure the preparing software to
build the model "with supports". This means the slicer will automatically build a support
lattice of plastic, up to the dangling part so that it has something to print on. Higher-end
printers can actually print with a different material that can be dissolved away, but so far
most home printers only use break-away supports. Either way after the print is complete it
is left to the user to clean up this support material to extract the desired part.

SLICING
Slicer Setting - Platform adhesion
Brim adds a single layer flat area around the base of the model to prevent warping. The
brim is connected to the model and will thus make the bottom surface area bigger. This
means that it can better stick to the build plate and in case of warping the corners of the
model are less likely to curl up because of the brim attached to it.

SLICING

Especially materials that have a high shrinkage (e.g. ABS) can benefit from using a brim.
But also models that either have a very big base or very thin parts at the bottom will stick
better to the build plate with a brim.
Slicer Setting - Platform adhesion

Raft adds a thick grid between the model and the build plate. This can
especially be useful when you have a model of which the bottom surface is not
completely flat or has little adhesion to the build plate. With a raft you make
sure that the print will stick better to the build plate.

Dual extrusion
Dual extrusion is the process of 3D printing with multiple filaments. You can mix colors or

loaded, the printer alternates between them by printing one at a time. It's not actually
faster at printing because its still using only one extruder at a time.
