a) FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING AN OPERATING SYSTEM

1. PRICE-
The operating system has to be cheap and affordable, generally the cost
friendliness of the operating system should be considered and checked on based
on the features and content it posses

2. USER FRIENDLINESS
The operating system must be with a variety priority for user friendliness, this
implies that it has to be able to support different types of user interfaces so as to
give a user a better working environment for efficiency.

3. MEMORY MANAGEMENT
This is a very crucial factor when someone is selecting an operating system.
Before making the selection of the operating system it should be considered that
The operating system should a good way for management memory that helps
codes to use less space of the computer. Such as MEMORY HOGS.

4. RELIABILITY
The operating system has to be able to run without crushing or hanging, respond
commands efficiently.

5. HARDWARE CONFIGURATION
The operating system has to have the best available ability to support hardware
configurations and ensure provisions for the computer such as memory size, hard
disk capacity and type of processor.
b) FACTORS THAT MAKE THE COMPUTER VERY POWERFUL
1. CPU
2. Cache
3. R.A.M

c) Cache memory is a high speed small amount of memory inside the microprocessor. It
stores data or information that is frequently used by the CPU. This means that it keeps the
active portion of the main memory WHILE Buffer memory is a type of special memory
that is attached on the hard disk drive of the computer it stores data from the immediate
access storage.

d) FUNCTIONS OF;
1. Word processor- Enables to create, edit, format, and print different text easily
2. Spread sheet- Enables a user to manipulate and arrange data easily
3. Database- Enables a user to organize, store, manage and retrieve data easily

 CRITERIAS FOR SELECTING SOFTWARE

1. SOFTWARE FEATURES
Before selecting a software the features accompanied with the software must be
considered. Such features include user interface type e.t.c
2. TRAINING ASSISTANCE
3. CUSTOMER SUPPORT OPTIONS
4. OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS
5. INTEGRATIONS AND PRICING
 A computer CPU is the brain of the computer, it is the main part of the computer that
performs al the activities of the computer. It is also known as the MICROPROCESSOR
The CPU process a very large amount of information at a very high speed.
 THINGS TO CONSIDER INORDER TO GET THE BEST COMPUTEER
1. Software feature
2. Memory capacity
3. User interface
4. Processing capacity
5. Hard drive capability

3. a)

 Reducing the font size

 Reducing the line spacing
 Adjusting the alignment of the letter

b)

 To avoid editing of the original copies without leaving any trace of evidence
 Hardcopies are acceptable as exhibits in cases of litigation
 Can easily be used without the experience of computer usage

c)

GENERATION CHARACTERISTICS ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

1ST GENERATION Used vacuum tubes Capable of making arithmetic Were too large
and logic operations Poor processing
Used electronic valves instead power
of punch machines Consumed a lot of
electricity
2ND GENERATION Used transistors Were fast reliable and Did not have any
dependable OS
Used less power and Lacked intelligence
dissipated less heat and decision making
3RD GENERATION Used integrated circuits Less small and costly in Lacked thinking
comparison power and decision
Used better and faster devices making capability
for storage Could not provide
Used an OS for better any insight to their
resource management internal working

4TH GENERATION Used microprocessor Very small in size Lacked thinking and
technology Very less costly decision making
Were very fast and reliable capability
Had less storage
capacity
5TH GENERATION Used artificial Were faster and cheap They need very low
intelligence Highest storage capacity level languages
Have a thinking and decision Make human brains
making capability dull and doomed

4 a)

 Viruses
 Trojan horses
 Worms
 Spyware
b)

I. Task and contact managing

II. Journal logging and web browsing

4c) gas plasma display uses a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical
voltages to create a picture WHILE liquid crystal display are made up of liquid crystals
pushed in a space between two glass plates whose images are created by varying the amount of
electric charge applied to the crystals

4d) A deadlock is a situation in which two computer programs sharing the same resource are
effectively preventing each other from accessing the resource resulting in both programs ceasing
to functions. Can be caused when a set of processes are in wait state because each process is
waiting for a resource that is held some other waiting process.

5 a) In serial file organization records are in no particular order and therefore to retrieve a
single record the whole file needs to be read from the beginning to the end

ADVANTAGES.

File design is simple.

Location of records requires only the record key.

Low-cost file media such as magnetic tapes can be used for storing data.

5b)

a) Bolding example the word disc

b) Italic example the word virus
c) Underlining example the word replicates
d) Numbering i.e the numbers on it
e) Left alignment i.e the two paragraphs
5c)
1. Its portable
2. Uses less power.

6 A) Utility software is a software designed to help analyze, configure, optimize or

maintain a computer.
B) examples of utility software: file management tools, anti-virus software, compression
tools and disc management tools.
c) HARDWARE COMPONENTS
 SSDs
 RAM
 Graphic cards
 HDDs
7 i) ENTER KEY
ii) BACKSPACE KEY
iii)SPACE BAR KEY
iv) CAPS LOCK KEY

8 a) Logical files do not contain data, they contain description of records found in one or
more physical function WHILE physical files contain actual data stored on an IBM, they contain
how data is to be presented to or received from a program.

b) DEVICES UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AN OS

 hardware devices
 kernel
 APIs
 Device drivers

c)TECHNIQUES OF USING A MOUSE

Position your mouse comfortably relative to your body

Don’t grip the mouse too tightly

Use your arm to move the mouse not your wrist

Lastly, adjust your computer’s mouse settings correctly according to the speed you want.
a)
 smaller computers are more complex to design and build
 they have a higher level of performance
 they are portable

b) PURPOSES OF RECYCLE BIN

 To hold the deleted files temporarily

 Gives a place store the files you no longer want

c)

 Single user
 Multi-user
 Multiprocessor
d)
 Remove your watch and jewelry and secure loose clothing.
 Turn off the power and unplug equipment before performing service.
 Cover sharp edges inside the computer case with tape.
e)
 Permanency of storage
 Cost of implication
 Capacity of storage systems

10 a)

 Mouse
 Keyboard
 Speakers
 CPU

b)
 USB ports
 Serial ports
c) SOFTWARE AUTHENTICITY refers to software originality that is its free from
intentional or unintentional vulnerabilities and it functions as intended.
d)
- Do not eat or drink in the computer laboratory
- Do not delete files that are not yours
-Do not install any software unless instructed to do so
-Switch OFF the computers when done
