Social History in Sufi Texts: A Case study of 17 th Century Sufi Sultan Bahoo

Sultan Bahoo (1630-1693) was a renowned Sufi, social reformer, and philanthropist of seventeenth
century Mughal Multan. He had guided and trained the followers and people around him through the
Sufi methodology. He also contributed the more than hundred books in Persian and Punjabi on Sufi
thought and methodology. He discussed the leading social issues and their remedy in his books to curb
the societal challenges of the time. The major subjects of his books are self-exploration of human,
spiritual self of human, challenges of society. He contributed more than hun

His descendants not only adopted his intellectual legacy but also used their influence for social work and
trained their disciples and followers by adopting the modern trends. They founded many organizations
and institutions to promote the teachings of Sultan Bahoo. In this research it would be tried to find the
social, political, economic, and religious role and contributions of the descendants of Sultan Bahoo. It
would be tried to analyze the social role of the personalities by using the modern theories of social role:
Social work, capacity building, psychological healing, spiritual training, socio-economic justice, character
building, moral and ethical upgradation of individual etc.
