1. The first newsletter

The Dead Sea, one of the world's most amazing geologic phenomena, is a geologically and
historically fascinating area. The Dead Sea is known for its exceptionally high salt content,
but it also has a variety of other geologic processes and formations. The Dead Sea is a
saltwater lake in the Jordan Valley that lies on the boundary of the West Bank, Israel, and
Jordan. The world's saltiest reservoir is located within this restricted region. This is the reason
why visitors from all over the world go to the Dead Sea.

When it comes to the history of the Dead Sea, the most famous time it is mentioned is in the
Biblical story of Lot's wife (Lot, Abraham's nephew). Lot's wife refused to heed the angel's
warning not to turn back and watch the destruction of Sodom, and when she did, God turned
her into a pillar of salt. “Lot's Wife,” a large pillar near the Mount of Sodom, is still known
today. In relation to the biblical story, the pillars are frequently referred to and pointed out as
the biblical tale.

Furthermore, the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are thought to have been written
by the Essenes between 1947 and 1956, was one of the most significant biblical
archaeological discoveries of the modern era and a finding that cemented our understanding
of the biblical history of the Dead Sea. The majority of the Dead Sea Scrolls are written in
Hebrew, and they contain papers that refer to sectarian regulations and religious writings.

Finally, the rifting that created the dead sea basin is estimated to have started in the Maya
scene 18 million years ago. Around 3.7 million years ago, the Jordan River Valley was
regularly flooded by water from the Mediterranean Sea. The Sedom Lagoon was formed by
the waters, which connected to the sea through the Jezreel Valley. The land between this
lagoon and the sea was reclaimed around 2 million years ago. The sea level was then kept in
the dead sea by a series of geological rising and falling processes, and the dead sea was
developed from there, this tectonic process is currently ongoing and it will remain a secret in
the future.

2. The second newsletter

The Dead Sea is considered to be a must-see destination not only due to its mysterious name
but also its incredible health healing and beauty care benefits. The Dead Sea is also regarded
3
as the world's largest natural spa because of the natural mineral composition in the water,
mud, and salt. The Dead Sea’s salt and mud contain a lot of minerals that have good effects on
our body such as Chloride, Zinc, Bromide, Magnesium, Sodium, Calcium, Potassium,
Bicarbonate, Calcium oxide, Chlorides, and Sulfates...

From ancient times, minerals from the Dead Sea have been used for health and medicinal
purposes. First of all, Bromine, Zinc, and Magnesium in the mud and salt are considered to be
able to calm down the nervous system. Besides that, when people spend time in the water of
the Dead Sea, the minerals such as Magnesium, Potassium, and Iron are absorbed by the skin,
helping to increase the blood circulation of the body, keep the body healthy. In addition, Dead
Sea minerals also help relieve hypertension because of the presence of Potassium,
Magnesium, and Calcium. These minerals help control blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart
diseases and ensure a long, healthier life. Especially, the presence of Calcium, Potassium,
Boron, and Strontium is very essential to prevent inflammation, and the availability of these
minerals in the Dead Sea's water and sand can help to reduce joint inflammation to a great
extent. Furthermore, the abundance of minerals such as Phosphorus, Calcium, and Sodium in
the Dead Sea is known to strengthen the bones by providing access to these minerals to the
surface of the skin through swimming or by applying sand paste to the body. Last but not
least, the Dead Sea minerals, through removing the by-products from the stress cycle by
increasing circulation and detoxification necessary, help people reduce stress very well.

Besides having the benefits in health, minerals from the Dead Sea are well known for beauty
treatments as well. Each mineral in the Dead Sea’s salt has its advantages in treating skin
problems and improving our skin conditions. For example, Magnesium has its uses like
enhancing cell metabolism, speeding up wound healing of skin tissues, soothing damaged
skin, protecting skin from allergic bacteria, treating skin problems, acne (face, back, chest ...)
folliculitis, insect bites. Another mineral like Calcium is used to balance sebum, enhance skin
hydration, promote cell renewal, prevent wrinkles and fine lines, and protect the skin.
Bromide minerals can soothe the skin, relieve muscle tension, calm nerves, repair skin cells,
and refresh damaged skin…Besides the salt, the Dead Sea’s mud contains 12 types of
minerals that can’t be found anywhere, are rumored to preserve the youth of Israel women.
Many studies on the effects of mineral mud on the skin have shown that Dead Sea mineral
mud contains a series of elements, minerals that are very good for the body, especially the
typical skin regeneration applications such as Sulfur, Zinc, Iron… In which, the Sulfur
element in the mineral mud helps the skin to eliminate toxins, Zinc helps to increase collagen

4
and to stimulate cell growth, Iron helps to increase metabolism. In short, salt helps increase
moisture in the skin, makes the skin soft and full of vitality while mud can absorb dirt and
sebum, help detoxify and support skin regeneration.

Fortunately, products from the Dead Sea’s minerals are produced in a variety of forms (mask,
serum, lotion, moisturizing emulsion, topical...) and widely distributed in many countries. So
it is not hard for you to get the benefits of the Dead Sea minerals even if you don’t have the
opportunity to visit the Dead Sea.

3. The third newsletter

In this volume, we bring up a topic that is so hot and needs attention when it comes to the
Dead Sea - Is the Dead Sea dying? The Dead Sea is one of the extremely valuable "assets" of
the land of Israel, a land of mysteries and famous biblical legends. We all know, because the
amount of salt in the water of this sea is too large, no one can sink here even if they can't
swim. However, due to the ongoing phenomenon of evaporation, many scientists predict that
within the next three decades the Dead Sea will be "dead", that is, it will dry up.

The first part which is mentioned is the current state of the Dead Sea. It was shrinking at a
level of 1 meter (3.3 feet) each year. Experts predict that the world's saltiest lake will dry up
by 2050, causing havoc on the environment, society, and economy threatening the Dead Sea's
complete environmental collapse and the water depth has annually decreased by 70
centimeters to 80 centimeters. In addition, we need to mention sinkholes in the Dead Sea.
Sinkholes are being formed as the coastline recedes, swallowing roads and buildings while
polluting freshwater basins and damaging the air in the vicinity. There are over a thousand
sinkholes in the area in the last 15 years. 6,000 sinkholes have arisen in just a few decades,
with roughly 1,000 of them in Jordan. Some are tens of meter deep openings. People have
been profiteering off the Dead Sea's resources by producing beauty items with its water and
mud, with no regard for the environmental damage they are causing.

To explain the situations mentioned above, we have given reasons in the next section. Experts
discovered sea levels are falling by an average of 1 meter per year. This decline is attributed
to an imbalance between the amount of water entering and leaving the sea. Specifically, the
Dead Sea lost more water than it received from the Jordan River. Another reason is that the
hot, dry climate of the Middle East makes it difficult for the lake area to replenish water on its
own. Moreover, this phenomenon may be due to the reduction of river water to irrigate the

5
land or use it for many other purposes by humans. When the Dead Sea is not supplied with
enough water, it will form many dangerous "sinkholes". In addition, the death-hole in this
area appears because freshwater interacts with the salt layer lying underground. When the
water melts the salt, the ground will have large gaps, the surface will sooner or later collapse.
Besides, resources are exhausted, the Dead Sea is getting smaller and smaller. The main
reason is human activities. Because the mud and salt in the dead sea have many benefits for
beauty and health care, their exploitation is increasing, causing the number of resources to
decrease. What makes the Dead Sea narrower and narrower? Farming areas, households, and
huge mining factories take away the Dead Sea water it should have enjoyed. So, the Dead Sea
shrinks at a rate of 91 centimeters per year. The main cause of this imbalance is human
selfishness.

So how to solve those problems? Recently, Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority have
signed a water agreement that authorizes the pipeline construction carrying brine water from a
desalination plant in the Red Sea to the Dead Sea with an expectation to replenish it with the
name as the Red-Dead Sea project. However, this project is not feasible because it is quite
expensive ($250m - $400m will pipe 200 million cubic meters of water from the Red Sea).
This project will cause the algal blooms’ formation in the Dead Sea because of the differences
in densities and minerals in the waters of the two seas. Those detrimental effects would have
influences on the tourism industry. Furthermore, Jordan will be narrow if this project is
completed. Finally, we also gave some alternate solutions for this status. The first alternative
option is to release water from the Sea of Galilee to the Jordan River and finally into the Dead
Sea. Another interesting option is to invest more in wastewater treatment. It provides a
valuable and sustainable water resource that will never run out. Wastewater treatment will not
only supply water but also produce energy and alleviate waste production, which are the other
major problems that Jordan is facing currently is to release water.

II. Reflection

Nguyen Thi Kim Anh

Through this course, I have improved my knowledge and trained more skills in the process of
making a newsletter. Whether studying offline or online, the knowledge that the teacher
brings has helped me a lot in the course. I already know the steps to make a newsletter, how to
have a title as well as the content to attract readers. In addition, images and arrangement also
play an important part to create an interesting newsletter Tasty and useful. In particular, this
6
subject has helped me to work in groups with close friends as well as reveal the ability of each
member. In addition to the things that I have learned, there is also a bit of difficulty but not
much. I was really confused as to where to start and what to do. I had a hard time finding a
reliable source because there was so much different information on the internet. But all
difficulties have been over thanks to friends and teachers help. This is an achievement that I
will remember after finishing 4 years as a student under Hanoi University of Science and
Technology.

Le Thi Tram

This course has provided me with a number of benefits that most students, including myself,
do not have access to in other courses. To begin with, the subject teaches students how to
display text layout as a formal article, whereas most previous courses concentrated on how to
design slides for presentations. As a result, the subject will serve as a foundation for students
to develop design concepts. Furthermore, by combining relevant material from all three
volumes to create a more coherent and complete report, the course benefited students in
developing their data analysis and accurate information selection skills. Furthermore, my
group struggled to find a reliable source, figure out how to format the material, and come up
with a reasonable idea. We eventually developed the final newspaper and finished product,
despite numerous disagreements about the concept. Finally, I'd want to express my deep
gratitude to the entire team, as well as Ms. Tran Hong Thuy, for her valuable guidance.

Nguyen Dinh Tu

With completing the final report in project-based English for Specific Purposes, I was able to
benefit from a variety of new knowledge and comprehension, as well as harnessing my
practical skills such as word processing, Teams, etc. These boost experiences for the further
opportunity in the future career path.

The biggest hurdle in the class for me was time management that seems essential for the
working environment. However, by co-operating with trusted female colleagues, our teams
generated enthusiastic support for the project that assists our network promptly to solve this
thorny issue. Besides this, it is likely complex to acquire a wealth of special skills while
accomplishing the first volume. From disruptive face-to-face connections because of
lookdown to dealing with probable conflicts within members. I was sometimes obstructed by
selecting these topics, analyzing the materials, and editing visual vivid images; however, our
teamwork once again became solid and effective than ever. Although my works contributed a
7
fraction of the whole success by editing, seeking resources, and connecting members for a
while, I felt positive whatever challenges turned out.

It is deniable that painful work brought us greater value rewards, we are brought together
throughout this course with valuable guidance of Mrs.Thuy as unforgettable memory before
graduate. I also explore myself more creatively due to designing tasks as a content supporter.
All of these mixed a miraculous potion of motivation and accountability. To be honest, I
appreciated the whole class member who provided an ideal environment to encourage
individual motion. Finally, I wholeheartedly demonstrated gratitude to this course.

Tran Thi Van

My mission in my group’s work is deciding the main content of each newsletter volume and
dividing tasks for each member of my team. For each volume, we all discuss to find and pick
up the official sources to get reliable information for our project. I also take responsibility to
edit the presentation slides, newsletters and the final report as well. The difficulty I met is
nothing but finding trust-worthy sources. I am very interested in this project course, the topic
we worked on and above all I’m pleased with our group’s result. Because we have done group
work very well, I also learn from my group’s members many things in both information
knowledge and soft skills. I want to thank Mrs. Tran Hong Thuy who guided and led us to get
the final result and my group’s member who accompanied with me throughout 16 weeks.
