Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Social Media is changing the world, and we are all here witnessing it

(Somerhalder, 2013). Social media is an internet-based form of communication.

Social media is typically used for social interaction and access to news and

information, and decision making. It is a valuable communication tool with others

locally and worldwide, as well as to share, creates, and spread information.

Social media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the

ideological and technological foundations of Web2.0, and that allow the creation

and exchange of user-generated content (Kaplan and Haelain, 2010)

To the students of the San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation Inc.-College,

as the voting for the new President is nearly approaching, much Information,

credentials are leaked out especially in Social Media. In students, Social Media is

a platform that we used to gather Informations and also the latest happenings

around the world; we have seen different news with the help of Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. This study addresses on how does Social

Media platforms affects the HUMSS students in San Juan De Dios Educational

Foundation Inc.-College in choosing a worthy Presidential aspirant. First, it brings

the impacts of social media platforms affecting the decisions of the students in

choosing their president.

SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 3

Second, it will compile Informations about the different opinions of the students

on how are they affected. Finally, it brings this information to a wider researcher

to assist them in their own researches.

Review of Literature

Variable 1: What is the Role of Social Media in Presidential Election Cycles?

(Guse, 2019)

Although the public uses social media to share their ideas and opinions,

the person who creates the material is rarely the person whose name is on the

profile itself (Guse, 2019). Each platform offers the public various means of

expression to produce original content, such as Twitter, Facebook, and

Instagram. In this research paper, it will discuss the great success of influencing

the students of San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation Inc.-College.

Furthermore, it will show how voter impressions are hampered by observing

fellow voters and presidential aspirants engage in internet political activities.

Variable 2: The impacts of social media on university students in Iraq (Aljuboori,

2020)

The rapid growth of social media has created a unique reality in the day-

to-day lifestyles of society more generally. These social media platforms have

expanded into a vast expanse of socialization, data sources, interaction, etc

(Aljuboori, 2020). The relevance of this study is that it tackles the issue mainly

with the students and illustrates what the impact is on them.

SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 4
Senior High School Department

Also, it covers students' most commonly used social media platforms, which

affects their ability to choose a better presidential aspirant.

Variable 3: Factors Affecting Youth Voting Preferences in the Philippine

Senatorial Election: A Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) Analysis (Kurniawan,

2021)

The growing power of the media has altered the possibilities for aspirants

to engage with voters. It has also been discovered that articles and other relevant

content about certain candidates on social media had a substantial influence on

voters when analyzing the personal qualities of the candidates (Biswas et al.,

2014). The significance of this study is that it provides an analysis of the factors

influencing youth voting preferences and will enable HUMMS students at San

Juan De Dios Educational Foundation Inc.-College to evaluate candidate

qualities and backgrounds in order to determine which is more deserving than

the other.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Today, the Philippines are the world's most "social nation." With 41

million active Facebook users between the ages of 18 and 65, netizens have the

potential to tip the scales in this election, which many are dubbing the country's

first "social media" election.

For millennials, social media is a vital source of information (or misinformation).

Social media may give free advertising, highlight vital advocacy work, make

speeches and declarations easily accessible, and assist candidates in broadly

and freely promoting their campaign messages. In that sense, it has the potential

to democratize the election process. Except that this isn't always the case.

For better or worse, social media can also create an obsessive focus on one or

two issues, magnify candidates' warts and pores, poke fun at their looks or

voices, amplify a misstep, an insensitive remark, expose a prejudice or bias – all

in real time without delay for the entire world to see and hear. Elections in the

Philippines will never be the same again after May 2016. As the campaigns have

demonstrated, social media can toss decorum out the window, separate families,

unfriend friends, block would-be friends, and unleash frenzied supporters that

make The Walking Dead look like a Halloween spectacle (and one that no doubt

voters in the U.S. can well relate). In this election, it has become clear that social
SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 6
Senior High School Department

media has rendered traditional campaign techniques ineffective, polarizing

people who have placed their hopes and ambitions in politicians who do not

exactly personify and embody a nation's ideals, morality, and ethics. To separate

the wheat from the chaff, responsible media and individuals must do thorough

fact-checking. (Buenaobra, 2017)

Given the rising use of social media by Filipinos and the physical limits imposed

by the Covid-19 pandemic, candidates' reliance on social media is projected to

rise. While it is still improbable that a candidate can win the president only

through a good social media campaign, there is a growing recognition that this

type of technology is becoming an essential component of the modern election

"political machine."

Experts claim that social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and others

were never intended to be used for political objectives. However, as information

technology has advanced, many people have recognized its potential for political

mobilization. Profiteering from how users share their information, including their

political views, opinions, and policy viewpoints, large social media businesses

have taken advantage. It is now widely accepted that disinformation has spread

due to its ability to elicit emotional reactions and hence obtain more interaction

from social media users. The nature of electoral campaigning appears to be well-

suited to social media algorithms incorporated into the technology itself. In other
SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 7
Senior High School Department

words, social media and electoral campaigns appear to be a great match; one

serves the financial motive of technology corporations, while the other serves the

desire of politicians and parties to gather votes. (Arugay, 2022)

Young people's political engagement on social media is increasing at a time

when the 2020 election, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Black Lives Matter

movement are all hot issues of discussion and action. Seven out of ten young

people say they've seen information regarding the 2020 presidential race on at

least one social media platform. Instagram (51 percent), Twitter (48 percent), and

Facebook were used by half of young people (ages 18-24) to learn about the

election (47 percent). These three platforms were also the "top three" in 2018,

but the percentage of young people who claim they've seen election information

on them in 2020 is 25 percentage points greater on average than it was in 2018.

Since 2020 is a presidential election year, an increase is to be expected; yet, the

magnitude of the rise is notable. The average rise in our poll across all other

sources of information (news websites, teachers, etc.) was only 14 percentage

points, demonstrating a significant increase when it comes to accessing election

information on social media. Even TikTok, the least-mentioned social media

network, had considerably more young people accessing 2020 election news

from it than Twitter did in 2018.

SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 8
Senior High School Department

Almost two-thirds of teenagers (64 percent) say they never or rarely publish

content or social media postings regarding politics, current events, or social

issues, with one-third citing a lack of qualifications as the primary reason.

However, over two-thirds of young people who generate material agree that it

has a beneficial impact on their lives. Creating social media posts or online

material regarding political/social problems that are relevant to them gives young

people the feeling that their voices are heard. An earlier CIRCLE study found that

kids who participate in political activity online are more likely to feel empowered

to participate in person.

The conversation about young people's usage of social media frequently takes

on a negative and patronizing tone, yet the data given here refutes such

assumptions. Social media is not just a great source of knowledge about

elections and civic engagement for young people; it is also a venue for youth to

express themselves and see the strength of their own voices. Simultaneously,

online media creation is a promising type of activism that contributes to young

people's expression of political identity as well as the development of civic skills

such as critical thinking, communication, debate, and collaboration. However,

young people connect with social media in a variety of ways, and the racial/ethnic

and gender differences we've uncovered highlight some of the ways biases in

who participates and feels comfortable engaging in online activism can be

reflected or perpetuated.
SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 9
Senior High School Department

While social media has become an even more prominent tool of action as a

result of COVID-19, we must take care to create fair and inclusive young

engagement in these places. Booth et al., 2020; Tombaugh et al., 2020; Kiesa et

al., 2020; Lundberg et al., 2020; Cohen et al., 2020)

The Internet's technical revolution has played a key influence in the spread of

these new forms of political action and expression. For one thing, the Internet's

rapid and continuing expansion has altered the speed and ease with which

communication and information flows. In numerous instances, this has had a

knock-on effect on political engagement. For starters, the Internet has improved

information access, cutting the cost (and resources) of obtaining political

information (Schlozman et al., 2012: 487).

Contemporary youth have grown up with the Internet, and have become the

fastest adopters of new technologies. The 'Donets generation,' 'Netizens,' and

'digital natives,' it is proposed that this generation of young adults not only has

the digital skills to use new technologies effectively, but that these technologies

have also become so integrated into their lives that the online realm is the

'natural' world in which they will choose to act on or express their views. (Kim

and Amna, 2015: 224). Indeed, according to Boulianne (2015: 534), the

revolutionary potential of social media may be limited to young adults who grew

up during the Internet revolution, because they both use social media extensively

and are still forming their political identities and habits. As a result, this
SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 10
Senior High School Department

generation of young people may be the first to see the mobilizing potential of

social media and the Internet in general.

Conceptual Framework

Choosing a worthy Presidential aspirant using a social media platform is a

proxy for a campaign strategy as a whole. There is a considerable concern about

using social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and etc. in

choosing their Presidential aspirant, and promoting a misinformation to the other

candidates. Findings support the hypothesis for those who used social media

platforms in choosing the presidential aspirant. Exhibit higher levels of perceived

The impact of algorithms and search on the formation of political beliefs

misleading information. Information that is politically tailored and distorts public

opinion There are substantial concerns about whether the algorithms that power

search engines and social media have biases. Filter bubbles or echo chambers

can have huge political repercussions. For instance, do people get information

from search engines and social media that is relevant to them? Do they

encourage people to explore opposing viewpoints or do they confront them?

Presidential candidate and spread false information about the opponent party.

This study asks the respondents how they used their social media platforms in

campaigning their Presidential candidate, how they spread reliable informations

platforms that is used by the students, and how the social media have impact in

choosing a Presidential aspirant in coming election. Social media had no effect

This study will help us how the social media play in promoting misperceptions

during political campaigns. Social media had no effect on belief accuracy about

the Republican candidate in that election. The 2016 survey focused on campaign

issues. There is no evidence that social media use influenced belief accuracy

about these topics in aggregate, but Facebook users were unique.

The youth are the most active social media users. As a result, student

this study was to identify student participation in social media on issues for

candidates in the 2016 Philippine Presidential Election. Because Filipinos rely on

the internet for communication and information, the internet has changed their

way of life in the Philippines. Social media is an important source of information

for millennials (Buenaobra, 2016).

Social media platforms are becoming popular as a means of self-expression,

communication, and influence, particularly in the context of political activism

(Pablo et al., 2014).

SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 21

These websites have been employed to disseminate information, encourage

people to vote, advertise one's voting decisions, and even predict election

results. Politics is making an impact on social media right now.

Aspirant candidates, particularly those seeking national office, use social media

to rally supporters and garner votes. Candidates are creating their own social

media identities and using them to contact with voters, engage in real-time

dialogues, and assemble their supporters (Ames, 2014).

The goal of this study was to determine how many social media accounts and

sites students had, their preferred social media sites for political topics, and their

presidential preference. Another specific purpose was to describe student social

media participation in terms of responses, social media activities in which they

are participating, and frequency of involvement. The findings of the study may

offer light on tendencies in social media use and voter behavior that may

influence the election process and outcome.

There is also a geographic cultural divide in terms of media consumption, with

urban areas enjoying better access to mainstream and alternative media. This

study will further help and enrich our research in regards to the political

participation of the people and collating shared sentiments of frustration over

stubborn patronage and corruption. Because of its expanding pervasiveness,

social media is defined as somewhat of an autonomous resource and an

intervening method, establishing a link between Pinoy organic cultures and

values and their exercise of political rights and direct participation in government.

The study also shows how people share information not only to express their

opinions and beliefs but in hopes of influencing other people's ideas about a

certain government official.

This kind of study will help us to engage more and expose the people who are

of gatekeeping, it also defines the preference of friends list. At least for the

young, those who we consider as digital natives, FB is a natural part of their

media habits and for many of them, there could be a reliance on the platform for

exposure to political news. It is thus as important to know the quality of their use

of this media platform(David CC, San Pascual MRS, Torres MES 2019).

The emergence of social media has reformed the digital platform's

expanding amount of research analyzing the various associations between social

traditional media, the Internet has established new methods of communication,

which has dramatically influenced the flow of information.

Addressing social platforms is therefore crucial in analyzing how political groups

use the internet to build their own channels of communication and contribute to

political knowledge advancement.

This study will aid us in determining how social media influences the political

sphere; the increase in the circulation of information; and the effects of social

In recent years, it has been said that social media has an impact on public

citizens and encourage more political discussions. Previous study has shown

that political institutions are becoming increasingly important to continuously

gather, monitor, evaluate, synthesize, and visualize politically significant data

METHODOLOGY

Introduction

This chapter explains various methodologies that were used in gathering

data and analysis which are relevant to the research. It addresses the data

collection techniques, data collection procedures, data analysis and the

instruments used for the research. This study , descriptive research design is

define as a research method that describes the characteristics of the population

that is being studied. The data for this study was collected by creating a

questionnaire and conducting a survey. The study was carried out through

survey, in a Google form.

The rationale behind this choice is from the sense that Humanities and Social

Science (HUMSS) students are learning about politics, we also have subjects

that teach us about our government. Hence, there is a big possibility of obtaining

all relevant and necessary data from this students. Qualitative research is a

process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks an in-depth understanding of social

phenomena within their natural setting. The researchers use this to focus on the

"whys" rather than the "whats" of social phenomena and relies on the direct

experiences of human beings as meaning-making agents in their every day lives.

The reason is due to the fact it addresses the “how” and “why” research

questions and enables deeper understanding of experiences.

SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 27
Senior High School Department

Respondents

The proponent selected the Senior High School of San Juan de Dios

Educational Foundation Incorporated-College to be the respondents of the study,

preferably the HUMSS students as respondents. The proponent had come up

with fourteen respondents who were sixteen to seventeen years of age, both

male and female, from grade 11 Blessed Contardo Ferrini students as

respondents. They answered the questionnaire that we gave to them, which

supplies the information we need.

They are the ones we need because one of their major subjects is politics, and

we want to know how they will choose their Presidential candidate using social

media.

Measures
The device that was used to collect the data was Google Form, and the

type of research questionnaire that was used was the computer questionnaire, in

which the Google Form was sent directly through their academic email address,

and to measure this data, we used the form of a survey. The questionnaire

contains up to 10 questions that consist of both open-ended and closed-ended

questions. For this reason, we were allowed to gather data and be able to

understand each HUMSS student's responses at San Juan De Dios Educational

Foundation Inc.-College.
SAN JUAN DE DIOS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. 28
Senior High School Department

The questions that were set out are related to the research paper we are

proposing, which is titled: Impacts of Social Media Platforms in Choosing a

Worthy Presidential Aspirant. Also, the qualitative sampling we used was

purposeful or purposive sampling with the reason to better know, analyze, and

gain a helpful idea that would help form our research paper.

Upon receiving the results, we noticed that the female students accumulated

64.3%, which was more than the male students, who accumulated 35.7%. And

the ages that were seen in the graph were between ages 16 with a percentage of

50%, while the other half was ages 17, which also has a percentage of 50%.

Then, for our first question, we asked the respondents what social media

platforms they frequently use, and the pie chart shows that 71.4% of the HUMSS

students use Facebook, 14.3% for Instagram, 7.1% for Twitter, and the

remaining 7.1% for YouTube. Next, they were asked how frequently they use

these platforms; 21.4% of HUMSS students said they use them at least twice a

Research Procedure

As part of this study, we will gather information about the influence and

implication of social media on HUMSS students of SJDEFI-College for them to

choose among the presidential aspirants who are the best for them. And to

gather that data and information, we have made a survey that we will distribute to

the grade 11 HUMSS students of SJDEFI-College.

The data were gathered using self-administered questionnaires contained within

a g-form survey created by the researchers. After we collect the data, we will

analyse it thoroughly for us to know what the implication of social media is in the

HUMSS student of SJDEFI-College in choosing a presidential aspirant.

Data Analysis

Researchers gather information and data

to fully understand the scope and possibilities of learning to ensure the quality of

the data to be presented. Researchers used a survey or questionnaire that was

inside the g-form in collecting data to make it easier to gather and answer

researchers and respondents. The researchers conducted brief orientation to

students and ensured the confidentiality of data collected before distributing the

questionnaires to the selected question answerer.

Treatment of the Data

Only percentage tallying was done by the researchers in this study. It did

not use any statistical method because it was only the beginning of the study. In

our recruitment of HUMSS students in the BCF group, 14 responded to these
