Chapter 1
Introduction
Social Media is changing the world, and we are all here witnessing it (Somerhalder, 2013). Social
media is an internet-based form of communication. Social media is typically used for social interaction and
access to news and information, and decision making. It is a valuable communication tool with others locally
and worldwide, as well as to share, creates, and spread information. Social media is a group of Internet-
based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web2.0, and that allow the
creation and exchange of user-generated content (Kaplan and Haelain, 2010)

To the students of the San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation Inc.-College as the voting for the new
President is nearly approaching, much Information, credentials are leaked out especially in Social Media. In
students, Social Media is a platform that we used to gather Informations and also the latest happenings
around the world; we have seen different news with the help of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.
This study addresses on how does Social Media platforms affects the HUMSS students in San Juan De Dios
Educational Foundation Inc.-College in choosing a worthy Presidential aspirant. First, it brings the impacts of
social media platforms affecting the decisions of the students in choosing their president. Second, it will
compile Informations about the different opinions of the students on how are they affected. Finally, it brings
this information to a wider researcher to assist them in their own researches.
Review of Literature

Variable 1: What is the Role of Social Media in Presidential Election Cycles? (Guse, 2019)

Although the public uses social media to share their ideas and opinions, the person who creates the
material is rarely the person whose name is on the profile itself (Guse, 2019). In this research paper, it will
discuss the great success of influencing the students of San Juan De Dios Educational Foundation Inc.-
College. Furthermore, it will show how voter impressions are hampered by observing fellow voters and
presidential aspirants engage in internet political activities.

Variable 2: The impacts of social media on university students in Iraq (Aljuboori, 2020)

The rapid growth of social media has created a unique reality in the dayto-day lifestyles of society
more generally. These social media platforms have expanded into a vast expanse of socialization, data
sources, interaction, etc (Aljuboori, 2020).
Variable 3: Factors Affecting Youth Voting Preferences in the Philippine Senatorial Election: A Structural
Equation Modeling (SEM) Analysis (Kurniawan, 2021)

The growing power of the media has altered the possibilities for aspirants to engage with voters. It has
also been discovered that articles and other relevant content about certain candidates on social media had
a substantial influence on voters when analyzing the personal qualities of the candidates (Biswas et al.,
2014).
Theoretical Framework
Today, the Philippines are the world's most "social nation." With 41 million active Facebook users between the ages
of 18 and 65, netizens have the potential to tip the scales in this election, which many are dubbing the country's first
"social media" election.

Elections in the Philippines will never be the same again after May 2016. As the campaigns have demonstrated, social
media can toss decorum out the window, separate families, unfriend friends, block would-be friends, and unleash
frenzied supporters that make The Walking Dead look like a Halloween spectacle (and one that no doubt voters in the
U.S. can well relate). In this election, it has become clear that social media has rendered traditional campaign
techniques ineffective, polarizing people who have placed their hopes and ambitions in politicians who do not exactly
personify and embody a nation's ideals, morality, and ethics. To separate the wheat from the chaff, responsible media
and individuals must do thorough fact-checking. (Buenaobra, 2017)

Experts claim that social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and others were never intended to be used for
political objectives. However, as information technology has advanced, many people have recognized its potential for
political mobilization. Profiteering from how users share their information, including their political views, opinions, and
policy viewpoints, large social media businesses have taken advantage.

Young people's political engagement on social media is increasing at a time when the 2020 election, the COVID-19
pandemic movement are all hot issues of discussion and action. The Internet's technical revolution has played a key
influence in the spread of these new forms of political action and expression. For one thing, the Internet's rapid and
continuing expansion has altered the speed and ease with which communication and information flows.
Conceptual Framework
Choosing a worthy Presidential aspirant using a social media platform is a proxy for a campaign strategy as
a whole. There is a considerable concern about using social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, and etc. in choosing their Presidential aspirant, and promoting a misinformation to the other
candidates. Findings support the hypothesis for those who used social media platforms in choosing the
presidential aspirant. Exhibit higher levels of perceived high knowledge about politics.

Poland, Spain, and the United States. Michigan, United States.

The impact of algorithms and search on the formation of political beliefs has sparked a global controversy.
Concerns about the Internet's ability to provide access to a worldwide treasure trove of information have altered
whether users of search engines and social media are being provided erroneous, fraudulent, or misleading
information. Information that is politically tailored and distorts public opinion There are substantial concerns about
whether the algorithms that power search engines and social media have biases. Filter bubbles or echo
chambers can have huge political repercussions. For instance, do people get information from search engines
and social media that is relevant to them? Do they encourage people to explore opposing viewpoints or do they
confront them?

This study will help our research since this study addresses issues by asking Internet users how they use search,
social media and other important media to get information about political candidates, issues, and politics
generally, as well as what difference it makes for individuals participating in democratic processes. We conducted
an online survey of Internet users in seven nations: Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the US.
(2) R. Kelly Garret (2019) Social Media's Contribution to Political Misperceptions in U.S. Presidential election

This study is concern about the role of social media, and since the election is coming, many people uses
their social media platforms in campaigning their Presidential candidate and spread false information about the
opponent party. This study asks the respondents how they used their social media platforms in campaigning their
Presidential candidate, how they spread reliable informations in the internet Social media such as Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram are the platforms that is used by the students, and how the social media have impact in
choosing a Presidential aspirant in coming election. Social media had no effect on belief accuracy about the
Republican candidate in that election.

This study will help us how the social media play in promoting misperceptions during political campaigns. Social
media had no effect on belief accuracy about the Republican candidate in that election. The 2016 survey focused
on campaign issues. There is no evidence that social media use influenced belief accuracy about these topics in
aggregate, but Facebook users were unique. Social media use by this group reduced issue misperceptions
relative to those who only used other social media (Garrett R.K. 2019).
(3) Navera, J.A., Garinto, L.A., Valdez, P.N. (2019) Teaching Against the Meme: Politics, Argumentation, and
Engagement in an ESL Classroom in the Philippines. De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines.

There have been some changes in the Philippines, where there are an estimated 67 million users of social
networking websites. Troll accounts, propaganda pages, and political memes have proliferated, effectively
weaponizing the internet and the online world (Camus, 2018). Competing viewpoints expressed on the internet
may become dangerous. Teachers and environments are challenged to create learning opportunities that
address these issues.

Concerns multiliteracies are being integrated into teaching and learning in educational institutions (The New York
Times). Language sessions become opportunities for students to engage in using several languages (London
Group, 1996). Techniques in message creation using a variety of resources. This study can help us to be
familiarized with the use of pictures, sounds, and film can result in interactive multimodal messages for a variety
of audiences. Moreover, multiliteracies and communication technologies let students share their work with others
regardless of geographical boundaries.

The youth are the most active social media users. As a result, student involvement in social media has an
effect on the result of an election. The goal of this study was to identify student participation in social media on issues
for candidates in the 2016 Philippine Presidential Election. Because Filipinos rely on the internet for communication and
information, the internet has changed their way of life in the Philippines. Social media is an important source of
information for millennials (Buenaobra, 2016).

Social media platforms are becoming popular as a means of self-expression, communication, and influence,
particularly in the context of political activism (Pablo et al., 2014). These websites have been employed to
disseminate information, encourage people to vote, advertise one's voting decisions, and even predict election
results. Politics is making an impact on social media right now. Aspirant candidates, particularly those seeking
national office, use social media to rally supporters and garner votes. Candidates are creating their own social media
identities and using them to contact with voters, engage in real-time dialogues, and assemble their supporters
(Ames, 2014).
The goal of this study was to determine how many social media accounts and sites students had, their preferred social
media sites for political topics, and their presidential preference. Another specific purpose was to describe student social
media participation in terms of responses, social media activities in which they are participating, and frequency of
involvement. The findings of the study may offer light on tendencies in social media use and voter behavior that may
influence the election process and outcome.

(2) Cabalza, C., Sanchez, P., Aguas, R., & Sicat, M. (2021, June 16). Political Participation through Social Media in the Philippines.

Another important factor to consider is the media in the Philippines. The convergence has resulted in a media that,
in one sense, is indebted to such political and social actors while, in another, asserts a neutral representation of data and
powerful pro-people viewpoints when confronted with its audience.

There is also a geographic cultural divide in terms of media consumption, with urban areas enjoying better access to
mainstream and alternative media. This study will further help and enrich our research in regards to the political participation
of the people and collating shared sentiments of frustration over stubborn patronage and corruption. Because of its
expanding pervasiveness, social media is defined as somewhat of an autonomous resource and an intervening method,
establishing a link between Pinoy organic cultures and values and their exercise of political rights and direct participation in
government. The study also shows how people share information not only to express their opinions and beliefs but in hopes of
influencing other people's ideas about a certain government official.
(3) David CC, San Pascual MRS, Torres MES (2019) Reliance on Facebook for news and its influence on
political engagement.

This kind of study will help us to engage more and expose the people who are active in politics
content. Social media like Facebook is considered as new layer of gatekeeping, it also defines the
preference of friends list. At least for the young, those who we consider as digital natives, FB is a natural
part of their media habits and for many of them, there could be a reliance on the platform for exposure
to political news. It is thus as important to know the quality of their use of this media platform(David CC,
San Pascual MRS, Torres MES 2019).

The emergence of social media has reformed the digital platform's capacities in connecting people to
grant them their freedom in interactions and cooperation to bring their voice to the forefront, and they can
depend on an expanding amount of research analyzing the various associations between social media and
politics from various angles. When compared to the recognized traditional media, the Internet has established
new methods of communication, which has dramatically influenced the flow of information. Addressing social
platforms is therefore crucial in analyzing how political groups use the internet to build their own channels of
communication and contribute to political knowledge advancement.

This study will aid us in determining how social media influences the political sphere; the increase in the circulation
of information; and the effects of social media on citizens through extensive research and analysis. Today we can
rely on more empirical evidence on the influence of the use of the Internet in politics (Hardy & Sheufele, 2005;
Howard, 2003), thereby giving more substance to the debate.

This study will help our research since the social media platforms are getting big, especially this coming
election. This research sought to determine the influences of social media in the presidential preferences of
netizens during the campaign period for the 2016 presidential elections in the Philippines. (D.N. Almarez, DM & A.D.
Malawani 2016). Social media is currently play a significant role in politics.

Through social media platforms, the users can acquire social resources, such as political information, social
services, or access to political officials and institutions. This research will focused in choosing presidential aspirant
using the reliable sources of social media. This research will study the impact of social media platforms in
choosing a Presidential candidate. This study will aid us in determining how social media influences the political

In recent years, it has been said that social media has an impact on public debate and communication in
society. Social media, in particular, is becoming more popular in political contexts. Micro blogging services (such
as Twitter) and social networking sites (such as Facebook) have recently been discovered as having the
potential to increase political participation. While Twitter is an excellent platform for users to publicly disseminate
not only general information but also political opinions through their networks, political institutions (e.g., politicians,
political parties, political foundations, etc.) have begun to use Facebook pages or groups to engage in direct
dialogue with citizens and encourage more political discussions. Previous study has shown that political
institutions are becoming increasingly important to continuously gather, monitor, evaluate, synthesize, and
visualize politically significant data from social media.

In this paper, we present a methodological framework for social media analytics in a political context. In particular,
our framework summarizes the most important politically relevant subjects as seen through the eyes of political
institutions, as well as analogous approaches from other scientific disciplines.
